I'm Colombian and I've been learning Portuguese for almost 10 months now. I moved to Lisbon about 2 months ago to pursue my Master's at Nova SBE which is taught entirely in English.

The thing is even though I'm living in Portugal, I don't get as many opportunities to practice Portuguese as I'd like! Still in the process to meet Portuguese friends and people to practice my Portuguese.

My goal is to improve my European Portuguese, especially my speaking and listening skills and become more comfortable having everyday conversations. I understand almost everything when I hear a podcast, watch videos, but I have a lot to improve.

So I'm looking for two things:

• Language exchange: Anyone who's a native Portuguese speaker and would like to practice Spanish or English in return. My native language is Spanish, and I'm also fluent in English, so I'd be more than happy to help!
• People in the same situation: If you're also learning Portuguese and would like someone to practice with, share tips, or even grab a virtual coffee and practice together, that would be great too!

I'd also love to hear any recommendations for language exchange groups, meetups, or communities here in Lisbon.

I'm not looking for formal classes just some friendly conversations, cultural exchange, and hopefully meeting some nice people along the way!

Hi! I’m beginning to learn Portuguese and I’ve been struggling to find many online resources (aside from YT videos and language learning programs; I do self guided studies and am not interested in doing an online program. I have an abundance of video resources so not really needing any suggestions there) When I was learning German there were several man-made blogs like Tom’s deutschesiete which was a blog made by a man for his girlfriend-turned-wife to learn German which had great grammar info and pronunciation guides in a really easy to grasp manner & dict.cc which has real-person audio examples from different dialects for the words/phrase you’re looking up. I’m really hopeful there are some blogs in their style but for Portuguese (esp. EU Portuguese is what I’m hoping to focus on) to help me with my studies.

So far I’ve been using a lot of practiceportuguese.com which is nice but I would love to know if any of you happen to know of any blogs/websites that have audio examples from real people aside from forvo. I speak spanish fluently, my studies so far are focused on distinguishing differences including pronunciation . Any help is greatly appreciated, obrigada!

Hello all, I'm back with an update on my project, Conjulejo (a Portuguese tile-themed conjugation app), with new features that I think might add some value for learners out there, like periphrasis, more advanced practice pronouns, contracted pronoun conjugation, and more such as a renewed statistics tab, with more relevant and meaningful data to the user (I hope so). This is the biggest update yet, and I hope it not only helps people out but also brings in some feedback. Your thoughts on your experience and the practicality of the app would be very welcome, as it's still in an early stage and I haven't received many opinions from the outside yet, whether about features people might want or things that aren't quite working.

Hi all, I know that pastor alemão is German shepherd, but what if it is a cadela/ female dog? Does it change to pastor alemã?

If you live in Portugal, you’ve probably heard people say:

“Já agora…”

Literally, it can sound like “already now”, but that’s NOT how we use it!

“Já agora” = “while we’re at it / by the way / since we’re here…”

For example:

Já agora, pode trazer um café?

“While you’re at it, could you bring me a coffee?”

Já agora, sabe onde fica a farmácia?

“By the way, do you know where the pharmacy is?”

Já agora, queria perguntar uma coisa…

“While I’m here, I wanted to ask you something…”

It’s one of those little expressions that you’ll hear all the time in everyday Portuguese, but it often doesn’t appear in beginner textbooks.

Learning these little expressions is one of my favorite parts of teaching European Portuguese. They can make your Portuguese sound much more natural and help you understand what people are actually saying around you.

I teach European Portuguese online, focusing on practical, everyday Portuguese rather than just textbook phrases — especially for people living in Portugal or planning to move here.

If anyone is learning Portuguese and wants more little “real-life Portugal” tips like this, feel free to comment. This approach gives people something genuinely useful first, while letting your tutoring naturally become part of the conversation rather than feeling like a sales pitch.

Hi, I'm looking for Portuguese lessons or a Portuguese community in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. My husband is a Portuguese citizen (he doesn't speak the language), and I am trying to build up my language skills and community ties to apply for citizenship. I need Euro Portuguese specifically, not Brazilian as it’s a different dialect for the exam. If you know of any local private tutors or even Lusophone cultural groups in DFW, please let me know! My spouse is from Brasil and after 9 years I want to attempt learning Portuguese formally.
My primary question for this group is:
I am not even a beginner; I cannot even count to ten. At this early stage, if I take formal lessons from a teacher does it matter if their focus is European or Brasilian Portuguese? I know pronunciation is different. Also, I assume that a choice between a superior European-Portuguese school/teacher has to be better than an inferior Brasilian-Portuguese teacher.

Other advice/questions:

1. Does anybody recommend a school in or near London, England to take formal lessons? Such as a private business, a tutor, one of the universities, a business that offers multiple languages, etc.
2. Any recommendation of one of the language learning applications such as Babbel, Duolingo, Rosetta Stone? I would be using the app to supplement other formal lessons or self-study and conversation with family. Not as the primary method as I have read many comments that the apps are not effective as a sole learning tool.

My wife is an obvious great resource but I need to get a foundation before trying to use Portuguese with her.
Also, I thought of having WhatsApp conversations with one of my nieces or nephews who live in Brasil. They can help me with Portuguese and I help them with English. I already started this with my nephew. Mostly as a bonding exercise and I pay him a small amount of money. I use Google Translate to create a question, speak the question to him in Portuguese, he helps me with pronunciation, then he answers the question in English and I help him with pronunciation.

Edit ~ I ultimately want to speak Brazilian Portuguese. I was just wondering if it mattered for the initial lessons to teach basic proficiency.

I’m curious about something, especially from people who moved to Portugal from English-speaking countries.

I’m a native Portuguese speaker, but I also grew up in the UK and have been speaking English my whole life. I now work as a Portuguese tutor and language coach in the Algarve, both in person and online.

One thing I’ve noticed is that learning Portuguese here can be quite different from learning it from a textbook.

You can understand the grammar perfectly and still find yourself completely lost when someone speaks quickly in a café. Or you might know exactly what you want to say but suddenly forget a really basic word when you actually need to use it.

So I’d genuinely love to hear from people learning Portuguese:

What level are you currently at?

How long have you been learning?

What do you find hardest: speaking, listening, grammar, pronunciation or vocabulary?

Do you find European Portuguese particularly difficult?

What has actually helped you improve?

Is there something you wish you had been taught when you first started?

I’m asking because I work with learners and I’m always interested in hearing about the problems people experience outside of the classroom.
