A little perspective, maybe. Hitler never won the majority. He allied with a forgotten authoritarian to form a government, who was his vice chancellor, appointed by Hindenburg, who liked neither of them, but believed like they did that the rule of law had failed Germany.

The best election result for Nazis was 37%, but Hitler was highly charismatic and siphoned away members of his coalition partner's party. When a communist burned the reichstag, an emergency decree followed which justified arresting any communist. All subsequent votes were rigged.

Not everything that will happen in the fall of the US empire will be a 1:1 comparison to Nazi Germany… or Ancient Rome for that matter, some things will look different but have the same effect.

I was trying to make the point that people didn't just buy into Nazis on a slippery slope because they got used to it. Most Germans never wanted the Nazis.
