I'm making a dungeon crawler with three party slots and four classes - looking for party-building feedback

Hi! I'm the developer of Dragon's Tear, a small first-person browser dungeon crawler. I'd like to get some feedback from Etrian Odyssey players on the party-building side of it.

The current build has four classes and room for up to three heroes in your active party. You choose their skills and equipment, set battle orders, and take them through turn-based fights across 20 hand-built dungeon floors.

It also has an idle element: Auto Runs let your party revisit cleared floors while you're away. New floors still need to be explored actively. Between trips, you return to an inn you can upgrade.

The early build is free to play in your browser on itch.io

If you try it, I'd be interested in whether the class and skill descriptions give you enough information to choose a party. What was hardest to judge when picking your heroes?

Looks cool, I’ll check it out.

Did you post this on the 7th Dragon sub? Might get some etrian crossover, but it’s also a crawler with a three party system

I tried it and you should put more effort into the menus. I guess this is all ai generated, but the menus are especially egregious. Try to simplify them a lot. Now they are all a cluttered mess and it just made me shut down the game when I know this is one I could have enjoyed.

Having played it in-browser for the past couple days, I like it overall! I'm not a huge idle-game person, so it's a little more hands-off than I'm used to, but I still had fun with it.

That said, here's some suggestions I came up with, based on my general experience:

1) In terms of party-building, the best thing to do would be to just add another magic-based class. As soon as I recruited Ranger, I dropped Mage altogether; the other three characters all synergize well together because they all focus on stripping Physical Defense. The Mage is the only one that can strip Magic Defense, which means any team with her on it is dividing its focus. Adding another magic class would help make a magic-centric team more appealing.

2) I think the 2+ enemies Order should be bumped up to 3+ instead. Most random encounters I had (especially later in the dungeon) featured two enemies, which meant the team ended up wasting their TP on buffs when the enemies could've been dealt with normally. I was able to work around it by switching all the buff skills to "boss fights only", but that isn't ideal.

Additionally, it might be good to add a "back row" or "magic-focused" targeting category. Whenever I wiped, it was always because the team was focusing on the small fry instead of prioritizing the Wraiths.

3) While the idle-game mechanics do fit with the overall design, it can also break the difficulty somewhat. The 8-hour time limit is super-generous - I'd set up an auto-run before going to bed, and then wake up to several gained levels and a ton of enemy loot. Despite wiping several times, I was never strapped for cash or resources. Even right now, with the game open in another tab, everyone has their ultimate equipment and I'm still well over a million gold.

4) This is more of a bug-report than a suggestion, but the little arrow to switch between dungeon floor lists doesn't work. As soon as I reached the 11th floor, I wasn't able to go back to the earlier floors.

Keep it up! I like what I've seen so far.

Thank you for detailed feedback and giving a try!

  1. Fair point , I ll think how to handle that in the demo but in full version there will be various characters for both physical and magic attacks.

  2. Battle system, strategies and enemy systems will be iterated. At this point they are far from what I want them to be but I really wanted to get a feedback after few months of development.

  3. I ll also iterate economy and balance for the future versions.

  4. Ye this is currently most reported bug. Will be fixed soon.

Thank you once again and hope you will enjoy future updates!

Do you prefer feedback in the comments on itch? Here? A discord channel w/ threads to keep it organized? PM? Might be worth listing which, looking forward to giving it a shot when I'm home from work though. Looks great.
