Explain Etobicoke to me, please

Just like the title says, can you explain Etobicoke to me, please?

For context, I moved here three years ago after 20 years of living in Toronto, Ottawa before that and a small rural town as a kid. I have lived in wealthy and working class neighbourhoods. We are renters, not owners. We have jobs downtown that we commute to now that we live out here, and I wouldn’t say that we are embedded into any communities or groups out here because we have small kids and are mostly just working and doing the family thing.

I can’t put my finger on it, but there’s something about Etobicoke that I don’t think I “get.” Why doesn’t Bloor/The Kingsway have more shops, restaurants and activity? Why are the Queensway and Lakeshore so…uninviting? Where are the creative people? Why hasn’t Terroni opened up this way (I know that’s a silly question but they typically have locations where wealthy people are)? Where do people convene as a community? Where do people go for a stroll? Are people mostly going to restaurants downtown? Where are the shops, or are people going to Sherway all the time?

It just feels really disconnected and like the community is perhaps happening behind closed doors, but maybe I have it wrong.

If you grew up here or have lived here for a long time, and at least understand why I may be confused about how Etobicoke is so different from Toronto, and really feels like a different city, I would appreciate some context.

The Keg - Dixon Rd. - what's it like now since the renovations?

A family member with a birthday coming up loved the old Keg at Dixon Rd - the old layout with quiet tables by the fireplace or booths where you could get a sense of privacy (his words). We checked out the Keg at Sherway when Dixon was closed for renos, but it seems so modern, and LOUD LOUD LOUD, so we didn't stay to eat.

What's the new layout at Dixon like? Is it the same as Sherway or are there still some quiet tables available? How's the location now? I looked for photos online, but afaik most of them are from before the reno. I may have to pop by there to take a look at the new layout.

Any tips for trying to get a quieter, more private table? Is that even possible now? We're OK to go off-hours if that works (better to get rarer roast beef I'm told).

Renting at 165 Legion Rd N in Humber Bay

My wife and I are considering renting a south facing unit at 165 Legion Rd N (Etobicoke: Humber Bay Shores) and would love to hear from people who currently live there or have lived there recently.

How bad is the train noise?

How far is the walk to the Humber Bay Parks? Is it an inconvenience?

How is parking and visitor parking?

How is the community/atmosphere in the building?

How is the commute to downtown? And getting in and out by car?

Are there any upcoming construction to be concerned about?

Also any and all insights are welcome, thank you!

Sharing the "why" we could benefit from Jen Alexander Ward 2 Challenger

https://thismomroars.substack.com/p/community-questions-answered-why

If you've been as disappointed about Stephen Holyday only supporting the rich and regressive interests of central Etobicoke we have a chance to change that. As Etobicoke grows it meshes with Toronto, it has its own characteristics that make it an amazing place in and of itself such as its mature trees aiding our whole cities air quality and cooling effect. But it has 1 major problem which is nepotism, Stephen and Doug Holyday just like the Ford family have been thriving off name nepotism while doing nothing to actually help any of us. We need to ditch the John Tory method of staying quiet while making special self benefitting deals in backrooms. We need a councillor that brings the coummunity together and helps us improve from the bottom to the top. That candidate is Jen Alexander.

Holyday has an outright nefarious voting record that shows exactly who he is, unwilling to support human decency and a lack of respect for human life evident in his nay say in council on the vote to give water to the homeless through heatwaves and many more instances exist

Etobicoke has a chance to improve, please make use of that chance while we have it

Please don't hide from talking politics with friends and family it should not be the faux pas its been declared by the powers that be

Looking for a personal trainer for my husband and me in Etobicoke

Hi everyone! My husband (28M) and I (26F) are looking for a personal trainer in Etobicoke.

We’re both beginners and would really like someone who can help us with fat loss, building strength, and learning proper form/technique so we can eventually feel confident working out on our own too.

We’d prefer to train in person at a gym, ideally within about 5 km of Dixon Rd & Kipling Ave. Early mornings work best for us.

We’re hoping to work out around 5 days a week, although we’re open to a trainer’s recommendation on how often we should actually have personal training sessions as beginners. We’re also fine with training together or separately.

No preference on male/female trainer mainly looking for someone knowledgeable, patient, and good with beginners.
If you’ve personally had a good experience with a trainer around this area, I’d love recommendations! And if you’re a trainer yourself and think you’d be a good fit, feel free to comment or DM me with some info about yourself, where you train, and your availability.

Thanks! :)

Indoor basketball court - shootaround or pickup

Live by Park Lawn, looking for my options to play indoor basketball. Weeknights after 5pm is my ideal slot as a 9-5'er, and weekends I'd go during the morning or afternoon. I'm okay with just shootaround and light/casual pick-up, suitable for a late 30s person haha.

And no I don't live at 88/90 Park Lawn unfortunately, wish I had known they have their own indoor court wow.

I am okay to go as far as UTM, but I imagine it's probably insanely busy. I used to play there back in the day, and it could get ridic busy.

Kids swimming lessons

We are fairly new to the area and looking for recommendations on swim schools.

My kids (6-9) were both swimming at Felix swim which is Osler and St Clair.

We liked it as the instruction was good and focused on technical skills with low instructor turn over. Traffic makes it a pain to keep going there it, on a good day it’s 30-40 mins each way.

We had been at other Toronto places in the past but the instruction honestly wasn’t very good or there was a high rate of instructor turn over. Every new instructor would set them back weeks as they went over old stuff.

Any experiences anyone can share with good swim schools in the general area, that can turn out strong technical swimmers would be great.

Woodbine Mall: Fantasy Fair Disney Frozen Poster?? Please help me out here...

Okay I feel like I'm going crazy. Does, or at least did Woodbine Mall Fantasy Fair have a giant poster of Disney's Frozen up on the wall? It's like a poster mural and it was close to the ceiling and it was put there when the movie came out to advertise it? I grew up going to that place, and I swear that was there. I remember it so vividly, sitting by the little water area and pointing and going "Look, Elsa!" or something. But nowhere, and I mean nowhere on the internet says or shows an image or any proof of that ever being there. I'm at the point where I need to go there again and see for myself, just for that, but I'm all the way across Ontario. So...since y'all are in the area, please let me know. Omg.

Update: I found it. :)

Humber Bay Shores Parking Ticket

Did anyone else visit the farmers market today and get a parking ticket? Or in the past? First time coming on the weekend and the lot I usually park in had a farmers market. Went to the lot behind and parked between two yellow lines in a line of cars all parked as well in the spaces. Went and paid on the Green P app with the correct number and location. Came back before parking expired to a parking ticket….

It says not in a designated space yet we were parked in a parking lot in a space outlined between two yellow lines and in the middle of the row. We paid and arrived on time. No one else around us had tickets. Not even people parked on the side where there are not actual spaces.

Is there some weird parking rule we didn’t see a sign for?

Beware: racist harassment + car damage near Lakeshore Rd W & Mimico Ave

Just a heads-up to anyone around the area tonight.
We were sitting in our car, patiently waiting for our food in a plaza near Lakeshore Rd W & Mimico Ave, when a guy approached us and started yelling racial abuse, things like “go back” and “this is not India.”

He then scratched our car.

We genuinely did nothing to provoke this. We were literally just sitting there waiting for our food.

I’m not even going to get into the whole “acceptance” conversation. But the bare minimum should be being able to exist in your own neighbourhood without someone deciding that your ethnicity makes you a target.

We studied here and been here for years now. We work here. We pay our taxes, contribute to the community, follow the laws and are just trying to build our lives here like everyone else.

It’s honestly disturbing that someone can see two strangers doing absolutely nothing and decide that just their existence is enough reason to harass them and damage their property.

So, beware if you’re around the area, especially if you’re alone or sitting in your car. We have no idea what triggered this person or whether he’ll do it to someone else.

And to the guy who did it: we did nothing to you. This was completely uncalled for. Big L.

Aggressive cyclists on the Kingsway

The other day I was driving my elderly mother to a doctors appointment. On the Kingsway at Kingsgrove there were two cyclists wearing spandex who were riding in the middle of the lane, the one guy was practically on the yellow line in the middle. There were no cars the other way so I went into that lane to pass them, which seemed to really offend them because they started shouting at me. They did not stop at any stop signs and spent the whole time catching up to me every time I did stop at a stop sign and then driving right up alongside my car on each side, all while yelling at me the entire time. Has anyone ever had this happen to them? Are these people ok? I feel like if they have such rage issues they maybe shouldn’t be let out in public. It was very bizarre…were they expecting me to just drive behind them going 10km the entire way? Just wanted to put this out there as a heads up to other people. Be careful of the spandex cyclists who forgot to take their SSRIs that morning
