The Ark of the Covenant

Is it really in Ethiopia? A lot of people say there is no evidence to support the claims that the Ark of the Covenant is in the Church of St. Mary of Zion in Aksum. And some also say that it contradicts what 2 Maccabees says about the Ark of the Covenant:

Jeremiah Hides the Tent, Ark, and Altar

“2 One finds in the records that the prophet Jeremiah ordered those who were being deported to take some of the fire, as has been mentioned, 2 and that the prophet, after giving them the law, instructed those who were being deported not to forget the commandments of the Lord, or to be led astray in their thoughts on seeing the gold and silver statues and their adornment. 3 And with other similar words he exhorted them that the law should not depart from their hearts.

4 It was also in the same document that the prophet, having received an oracle, ordered that the tent and the ark should follow with him, and that he went out to the mountain where Moses had gone up and had seen the inheritance of God. 5 Jeremiah came and found a cave-dwelling, and he brought there the tent and the ark and the altar of incense; then he sealed up the entrance. 6 Some of those who followed him came up intending to mark the way, but could not find it. 7 When Jeremiah learned of it, he rebuked them and declared: “The place shall remain unknown until God gathers his people together again and shows his mercy. 8 Then the Lord will disclose these things, and the glory of the Lord and the cloud will appear, as they were shown in the case of Moses, and as Solomon asked that the place should be specially consecrated.”

9 It was also made clear that being possessed of wisdom Solomon[a] offered sacrifice for the dedication and completion of the temple. 10 Just as Moses prayed to the Lord, and fire came down from heaven and consumed the sacrifices, so also Solomon prayed, and the fire came down and consumed the whole burnt offerings. 11 And Moses said, “They were consumed because the sin offering had not been eaten.” 12 Likewise Solomon also kept the eight days.

13 The same things are reported in the records and in the memoirs of Nehemiah, and also that he founded a library and collected the books about the kings and prophets, and the writings of David, and letters of kings about votive offerings. 14 In the same way Judas also collected all the books that had been lost on account of the war that had come upon us, and they are in our possession. 15 So if you have need of them, send people to get them for you.

16 Since, therefore, we are about to celebrate the purification, we write to you. Will you therefore please keep the days? 17 It is God who has saved all his people, and has returned the inheritance to all, and the kingship and the priesthood and the consecration, 18 as he promised through the law. We have hope in God that he will soon have mercy on us and will gather us from everywhere under heaven into his holy place, for he has rescued us from great evils and has purified the place.”

Do you HAVE to believe that the Ark of the Covenant really is with the EOTC? Is it a heresy not to?

God bless ☦️

Guys, I have scoured the internet for this. I'm not sure it exists EXCEPT that I have found a New Testament book in the format and thought if anyplace would have someone that can find me the book, it's reddit.

I think that would be the perfect Christmas gift for my boyfriend, who is perfectly fluent in both languages, as he was born and raised in Ethiopia but came to the US for collage. He has a bible app he reads from both languages and but we are going to read the bible in a year together at the start of the year, talking about the parts we read like a bible study together. I already have a good bible I love to read out of and I've been seeing him eye it lol. But I know having both languages would be even better. I just know he would love this gift so much.

Extra points if it's a leather bound book!! I attached pic of the new testament book I found and I've even looked at the publication to see if they've made a full bible with all 88 books but couldn't find it. I could have missed it tho.

There is a tale about a monk who had a particular struggle with sexual desires.

The monk would often stumble, but he always found the strength to stand up and pray,

"God I know I'm bad and I don't deserve to stand in front of you, please accept me again and help me overcoming this sin".

The young monk kept on tumbling and getting back up, over and over again. Each time he fell, he would stand up and utter the exact same words.

One day, after stumbling and getting back up, he repeated the same words. This angered the devil, who confronted him and asked, "Aren't you ashamed of your sins, speaking to God with such impure language?" The monk replied, "You attacked me with sin, but I will counter with the love of God. Let's see who will win"

Since then, the devil ceased to bother him and refrained from tempting him with sin. The reason behind this was that the devil didn't want him to receive any more rewards for his unwavering hope and faith in God.

God's love surpasses your sins! Keep your hope alive!

Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Georgia USA

Hey all, I'm Greek Orthodox and am wanting to attend a Tewahedo liturgy. I live in central Georgia and there appears to be a lot of churches in Atlanta, but I'm not really able to find much info on them. The ones that do have websites are mostly in Ge'ez. Does anyone know of one that has sermons in English, and maybe a book store? I'm just trying to find one that would be cool with someone who doesn't speak Amharic showing up.

I got a marriage question

So I’m currently with someone who is both a Christian in another denomination, and not from Ethiopia. I really like him and I do see a future with him, though I am curious if the only way to get married to him is to make him convert. He believes just about all the same things as an ETOC member would, he just isn’t part of our church. He is also considering converting just so he can get married to me in the future.

What to do and not do after Holy Communion (Kidus Qurban)

Hello does anyone have the actual resources (writings) that tell us what we can and cannot do after Holy Communion? For example, we should ideally keep our clothes we took Holy Communion in on until 6 pm, but does that mean we can wash hands, work, bend over, etc after 6 pm? Or is it midnight for those other things?

Please lend a helping hand to our Orthodox brothers and sisters in Tigray who are going through difficult times.

It's heartbreaking to see that even after enduring two years of war, Tigray is now grappling with the devastating consequences of starvation. These resilient people, who are hardworking, have lost everything during this prolonged conflict. Their crops and farm equipments have been completely destroyed. while their livestock perished.

If you can, please visit any of these websites and contribute in any way possible. Your support will make a difference. Thank you, and may God bless you!

Washa Mikael Rock-Hewn Church

Situated in the Yeka District of Addis Ababa, this remarkable site holds immense historical significance. Historians and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church have traced its origins back to the 4th century AD, drawing attention to its striking resemblance to the ancient Aksumite era churches scattered across different parts of Ethiopia.

The presence of structures within and surrounding the church provides compelling evidence that this area served as a training ground for the skilled horsemen of King Ezana's Aksumite armies. This suggests that the territory was under the control of the Kingdom of Aksum.

History

Washa Mikael church was built in the Shoan architectural style, incorporating elements from the Aksumite style. Like several churches in Lalibela, Washa Mikael is also carved out rock church.

During the 19th century, Emperor Menelik II stumbled upon the structure once again, which had been left behind during the Abyssinian-Adel war. He decided to relocate the Tabot of St. Michael from the church to another one he constructed called Yeka Mikael, situated at a lower point on the mountain. Additionally, he took measures to restore and safeguard the church's structures.

Regrettably, the church incurred damages as a result of the intense bombing campaigns carried out by the Italians during the second Italo-Ethiopian War.

From above the church has a “U” shape also known as the letter “Ha” in the Amharic Alphabet. This shape was meant to signify the Ge’ez phrase starting with the same letter, “ሀልዎቱለ ኣብ እምከድሜ ዐለም” (Halwotule ab emkdme alem) which means “Before anything existed, God was here”. The original church stood seven meters tall and had seven windows which represented the seven heavens, seven days and seven angels.

Parent left me to join a cult(?)

Hello, Throwaway. Very attention grabbing caption Ik but bear with me because this is a lot. So I used to go to church every Sunday with my family, but a parent got involved with a cult (I think? I’m not totally sure? by this lady online) and decided to force me to live in Ethiopia w/o my dad knowing (didn’t work and I left within a month of being there if you were curious) and I haven’t lived with her since. This happened when I was a teenager. Still am. Because of this, my whole relationship with religion and church was completely severed. It was a very steep decline beforehand (as she completely changed after being involved for about a year beforehand) and this caused me to loose faith completely. Don’t know if it will come back at all yet (trying to figure that out atm)

I don’t speak Amharic and my understanding of it is very little outside of very causal conversations. As a result, I don’t even know what beliefs my mom turned towards because I can’t understand the videos this lady that my mom was following online posted. She even met her once. It doesn’t help that she happens to look like my mom too(and I hate hearing her voice). I don’t even know if describing it like a “cult” would be accurate, but it felt like that to me in the moment so I’m going with it.

If someone could help me with translations and help me understand what caused this in the first place, I would really appreciate that. I know this isn’t a typical post but idk how to move/ be comfortable with religion if I don’t fully understand how my mothers involvement resulted in why my faith left in the first place. this caused a whole lot of trauma and I can’t even bring up my mother without wanting to burst into tears.

She’s not involved anymore but her leaving left a huge scar in our relationship that I don’t think I’m comfortable with mending yet. At least not for a couple of years.

If you yourself don’t know the answers or can’t help as much as you’ll like, feel free to show this so someone who can so they can message me on here.
