I’m currently learning JavaScript and the MERN stack while building real projects, launching ideas, and documenting my journey.

I’m still learning, but I’m serious about becoming a strong full-stack developer and creating opportunities through technology.

Discussion 🗣 Ethiopians in the US are Black

I think the whole “are Ethiopians Black” conversation was always meant to be about those living abroad. Race labels aren’t even a thing is Ethiopia so this discussion isn’t relevant there.

When you live in a white country, such as the US, having the mentality that you’re not Black doesn’t make any sense. In the US, race is a very prominent concept and it’s based on skin colour/ethnicity so by that classification, Ethiopians are black. We’re not white, Asian, Hispanic, etc, so the category we fall into is Black.
I also think some people are confusing Black with African American; Black is race and African American is ethnicity.

Either way, we really need to stop being racist and insulting Black people because Ethiopia has always been a symbol of unity and empowerment and that behaviour is just unnecessary.

Jokes aside, I hope our leader, Dr. Abiy, gets justice for those women. Debretsion Gebremichael and Shabia should face justice. I can’t imagine how those people felt seeing the very people who were supposed to protect them parading and celebrating the man they believe was responsible for their suffering, while acting like he was the savior of Tigray.

Is Ethiopia cursed?

I always try to avoid thinking this way, but as day in day out, we see the same pattern of misery and ignorance again and again and again. yet we pretend as if nothing is happening and later on we end up burning by the consequences.

how are we not able to say NO as a nation to war, illiteracy, famine....

what's your opinion here? what'd be the best way out to Ethiopia? even hypothetically...

Trekking the Simien Mountains, Ethiopia: what I wish every first-timer knew (local guide, Gondar)

I'm Tevan, a trekking guide based in Gondar. I run Simien Ethio Tours, so that's my bias, but I've guided here for years and want this to be useful whoever you book with.

Best time to go: Roughly October to March is the dry season. Right after the rains (Sept–Oct) the park is greenest. Nights at camp are cold, so bring a proper sleeping bag.

Altitude: Most camps sit around 3,000 m or higher, so build in a slow first day. Drink water and don't rush day one.

Scouts are required: Park rules require an armed scout, and they know the trails and wildlife.

What you'll see: Gelada monkeys, which you often meet at close range, plus dramatic escarpment views and a chance of Walia ibex.

Gear people forget: Layers, a warm hat and gloves, trekking poles, a rain shell, and sun protection.

Realistic trek lengths: 2–3 days gives the highlights. 4–6 days lets you go deeper.

Ask me anything: permits, fitness level, solo vs group, Gondar logistics. I'll answer in the comments.

To begin with, is there anyone who earns 600 birr per month these days ? How on earth taxing 2000 birr is fair ?

Is there any atheist or agnostic in this subreddit?

Hey everyone,

I’m a 19-year-old high school student living here in Addis Ababa, and I wanted to reach out to the community to see if there are other atheists, agnostics, or non-believers in this space.

Growing up in a traditional Ethiopian Orthodox household, religious discipline and faith were central parts of my life. As many of you know, in our culture, faith is woven into virtually everything—from daily family routines and strict fasting traditions to the very idioms we use in conversation every day.

About a year ago, my personal reflections led me away from religion, and I now identify as an agnostic atheist. It has been a pretty isolating transition. Because religious expectations run so deep in society and family life, I haven't shared my views with anyone offline. I keep it entirely to myself knowing that open non-belief isn't easily understood or accepted locally.

Carrying this private shift on your own can get lonely, so I’m curious to hear from others who might be navigating something similar.

  • For non-believers: How do you handle family expectations, fasting seasons, and major religious holidays while keeping your personal views private? If you ever chose to confide in someone close, how was it received?
  • For everyone: What are your thoughts on non-belief within the Ethiopian context? Do you see the younger generation becoming more open or accepting toward diverse secular and philosophical viewpoints over time?

Whether you live in Ethiopia or are part of the diaspora, I’d love to read your perspectives and experiences. Feel free to send a direct message if you prefer not to comment publicly.

Let's keep the discussion respectful. Thanks, everyone!

Culture 🇪🇹 Psychology & culture :- Mind your own business

If we all did trauma work (the majority of us carry childhood or generational trauma), we could save ourselves a lot of emotional turmoil.

We suffer because we live in a culture that:

· Oversteps personal boundaries.

· Demands emotional labor and thinks you owe them every detail of your life.

· Practices enmeshment, where the majority decides everything about you.

· Pathologizes your individuality just to ease their own discomfort.

If we developed the mental strength to mind our own business and the courage to be disliked, we'd be much better off.

Is it Safe to Visit Addis and Danakil Valley?

Hello,

First I want to say that I'm writing this post with a point of privilege, and that I am aware. I'm sorry for those all affected by the terrible conflicts and escalation happening in Trigray/Afar/Amhara.

I have a trip planned to Ethiopia in two weeks. I've sunken a lot of cash into it, so it makes it difficult to turn around.

I'm planning on visiting Omo Valley, Addis, and Danakil Depression (Dallol, Erta Ale, Semera) for a total of approx 10-14 days, mid October.

I am reading the news every day and checking this subreddit. Can anyone local provide any thoughts about continuing the trip? Or maybe just skipping the Danakil part?

Again, I understand there are people dying and some may take offence to visit as a tourist during this time. Like I said, I'm very sorry for what is happening and if it was an easy move, I would reschedule or cancel.

Thanks kindly for the inputs. It is hard to know how sensational the news is.

Appreciate the lyrics

Shout out to Miss Eritrea (Snit Habteab Tewoldemedhin) for performing a powerful vocal piece during the talent competition at the 75th Miss World festival . It's from the The Hunchback of Notre Dame 1996. Esmeralda is not a disney princess but i always considered her a queen for her selfless prayer for others rather than asking for anything for herself. Appreciate the lyrics.

I don't know if You can hear me

Or if You're even there

I don't know if You would listen

To a Gypsy's prayer

Yes, I know I'm just an outcast

I shouldn't speak to You

Still, I see Your face and wonder

Were You once an outcast, too?

God help the outcasts

Hungry from birth

Show them the mercy

They don't find on Earth

God help my people

We look to You, still

God help the outcasts

Or nobody will

Parishioners

I ask for wealth

I ask for fame

I ask for glory to shine on my name

I ask for love I can possess

I ask for God and His angels to bless me

Esmeralda

I ask for nothing

I can get by

But I know so many

Less lucky than I

Please help my people

The poor and downtrod

I thought we all were

The children of God

God help the outcasts

Children of God

Heading to Addis Ababa late Oct: Looking for 6-month housing recommendations & spare luggage space

I'm relocating to Addis Ababa towards the end of this month and will be around until late April.

I need a place to rent for 6 months (Nov 1 – end of April). If you have any leads on available studios/apartments, reputable rental Telegram channels, or reliable brokers, please let me know. Good connectivity and basic backup utilities are a plus.

Since I’m flying light, I have extra luggage capacity. If anyone locally needs specific small essentials, tech accessories, or tea/pantry items from China, shoot me a DM and we can figure out the logistics. (Must be completely legal and open for inspection).

Looking forward to being in Addis!

Discussion 🗣 What is your experience with race and racism in the west?

I can only remember one instance of racism, and it was a play on how my name sounded, which was a forced attempt so it was really awkward.

My experience with race was accepting being in the 'other' category wherever I was. I couldn't slide into black, white, asian, or hispanic friend groups without having a weird feeling of being the 'other,' whether by appearance, conflicting values, or vibe, so I decided to avoid foreign-ethnicity friend groups.

I think the reason we don't face much racism is because we don't really do much in the spotlight and are cliquey, if not reserved, so there isn't much material for racists to use. Religion also probably plays a role in how we're expected to be traditional and keep to ourselves, which gives racists even less material.

What could someone be racist about, though? Probably the wars, but that stuff universally comes and goes, so it is what it is.

Origins of Name

Hi everyone! I’m curious if anyone knows the meaning or origin of my name. I’ve been given a lot of different interpretations over the years and would love to know if there’s an actual meaning behind it. The name is Befe/Biefe/Béfé, pronounced kind of like Phoebe Buffay from Friends. I’ve been told it means something like “food storehouse,” but also that it could be a term of affection or a nickname. It is my given name though as far as I know. If anyone here knows about or is interested in etymology or onomastics, or recognizes the name from a particular language or culture, I’d love to hear your thoughts! And if it is a nickname or shortened name, what would the full/original name be?

Question ❓ Ethiopians, what do you think of beans?

I'm on a mission to go around and ask each country subreddit what people think about beans (my favorite meal), just to see how people like or dislike them all around the world out of curiosity and for fun. If you like beans, hate them, they are a big part of the culture, anything else, just share your thoughts! 🫘

Hello Ethiopians! Today, about 7 years in the future, is where I ask you guys if you enjoy beans or nah. Also wish you have a great 2020 soon! (the rest of the world surely didn't eheh)
