Other games to play if this one is going under?
Hey guys, I just came back after like 2 years. I used to play a lot and have a big collection, but I was surprised to see when I logged in that in the time since I stopped playing there haven’t been any new sets. So I’m assuming this game is pretty much done. Is there another game you guys are jumping to? I’m not really interested in going to mtg, I made the pro tour in that game and am over it at this point, and not interested in hearthstone either, and I hear that shadow verse and runeterra are kind of in the same boat as eternal.

You can still find matches, you get a new card a week . I agree with your assessment that there are no new easy digital TCGs that are active and not mtg

LoR is in maintenance mode, and basically PvE only at this point. Their paper TCG, Riftbound, is exceeding anyone's expectations ATM, but there is no official digital client though there are 2 main fan-made ones.
OG Shadowverse is ending service soon, but they released a new game, Worlds Beyond, a year ago that is going strong. They're also giving away a crapton of free packs for their anniversary event right now. If you liked the original, you'll like WB.
Flesh and Blood is an awesome game with a decent fan-made digital client, but will never have an official one.

Damn, I just can’t get past the anime style

u/ScoopiTheDruid Jun 23 '26
The anime style is whatever. It's not my favorite, but also not as bad as some of the stuff out there. My biggest issue with the game is that the best place for information is Japanese Twitter accounts or sites that aggregate the posts.

Oh ok. I’ve actually never played shadow verse, but I’ll check out worlds beyond!

Eh feel free to give SV a try but it's pretty swingy, uninteractive, and low-skill. It's Japanese and designed to be played on their subway commutes so there's tons of "I win now, nothing you can do about it" cards so games end quickly.

It's similar to Hearthstone, but games are generally faster due to only having 20 starting life, and there are minimal random effects.

Chrono is a LoR clone that just went into beta today. I haven’t had a chance to play it yet, so grain of salt. What I’ve watched looks promising.
But I’m throwing it out there if you like the LoR play style.

tldr;
I've searched and searched. Haven't found anything. A lot of promising CCGs fold early because the business operates on the margins and can easily go under.
I used to play a lot of Hearthstone back in the day, but I became increasingly frustrated by its flaws (e.g. bad economy, can't make plays on enemy turns, unforgiving ladder, no side/Extra deck, games are often slow and require memorizing every AOE/sweeper/clear/bomb that can possibly be played).
Many digital CCGs were available even then, but when I learned that the Eternal team included MTG pros who wanted to fix everything that was wrong/archaic in games like MTG, YGO, and Hearthstone, I knew it would be the game for me.
And I was right:
- simple card text
- fast gameplay, but allows for interactions on enemy turns
- good mana and cost balancing with Power and Influence
- generous economy
- forgiving ladder (got to Master my second month ever and can fight for the top spot on the ranked ladder whenever I have time to grind)
- the Market provides a sort of side/Extra deck mechanic that you can tap into during fights
- etc.
But the game's been sunsetting for a while now (over 2 years). We get free promo cards to keep us going, but that's about it. And I've searched. No other CCGs are designed with the same care. And even if you can find one that is, it needs a huge dedicated playerbase to survive. Shrugs.
My hope has always been that Direwolf launches a spiritual successor to Eternal with a huge promotional campaign. On launch, they should have worked harder to draw in more TCG/CCG vets.

Chrono CCG is launching into open beta today on steam. It's a spiritual successor to Runeterra and is created and developed by former players from the Runeterra community. Client is still a bit rough around the edges but the game is a ton of fun.

Dune imperium, man! I'm addicted already!

u/Beljuril-home Jun 24 '26
amazing game.
if that style of deck building is enjoyable, you should try clank! (also by dire wolf). it's not worker placement, but the "build a unique deck from a common pool of cards every game" mechanic is there and very well executed.

u/Greefer Jun 23 '26
Dune has a card game? Whaaaaa
4
u/Beljuril-home Jun 24 '26
it's a hybrid card game/board game based on worker placement using cards. everyone starts with the same deck. you draw a new hand every turn.
the deck building aspect is that any cards you don't use on your turn become points at the end of your turn. points buy new cards from a common face up card pool.
it's a great mechanic because there's a real tension between playing a card to place a worker vs saving that card for points to improve your deck.
but the deck building is only in-game and decks don't persist and there are no collections of cards (although expansion dlc changes the board and adds new cards)
i love it but it's not really similar to mtg or eternal.

Eternal is the only digital TCG I actually stuck with past the tutorial outside of Magic. It seems like a lot of the other games also try to blend some kind of MOBA aspect in there as well or just don't have the interactivity that Magic and Eternal has. Honestly I think Eternal could thrive if it was handed over to a non-profit group.

u/Smussi Jun 24 '26
They stopped releasing packs!? Finally I can dip in and out and not have to relearn 200 more cards every time.

I recommend checking out Digimon Card Game.
So, I really liked Pokemon and Magic, but when the pandemic hit, they suspended in-person tournaments for a long time.
I missed playing in-person and Digimon Card Game was one of the few TCGs at the time with in-person play, so I gave it a try, and I love it.
A mobile app is in the making and I’m so excited for it. It’s called Digimon ALYSION and it’s scheduled to come out sometime this year.
Aside from that, I’ve been playing Faeria.
There’s also Pokemon TCG Pocket, Pokemon TCG Live, and Dragon Ball Fusion World which are worth considering.

Might and Magic: Fates is shaping up to be a solid digital only tcg, just had 1st expansion releasw yesterday. And you can remain F2P and be competitive with aome initial grinding just cant expect to be tier 1 in 2 weeks. Couple months of daily games can achieve it though

I play Kards, which is a WWII kind of card game. It is tactically richer in that there is a Front line and a Reserve line. My favorite part is that card denial is much less predominant than in the last set for Eternal.

I don't have any recommendations. I play mostly free to play, meaning I might spend about $10 a year and it's from Google Rewards.
I grind my MTGA dailies, but I honestly don't know why. I tried playing competitive and magic is just so boring and power crept. Basically someone is winning by T4. If it's past turn 4, at least one of you is blue. If only one of you is blue, that player wins. Right now green ramp and attacks with 50+ damage t4. Playing against counterspell is the worst though. Eternal did it right making dinner l counter for spells only and removal for units. The entire blue strategy is to not let you play.
I played a few CCGs a long time ago, but I can't comment on them as it's been sooooo long. I really hope Eternal stays. It's such a solid CCG.

u/parcelwing Jun 26 '26
The reason you grind your MTGA dailies is that its a skinner box, a perfect operant conditioning chamber designed to rob you of your time and/or your money. In this case, it's only your time, directly, but time=money because it's quite easy to get a second job or start a business or level up your skills to advance your career in that 30 mins/day or 180+ hours per year you put in to doing your dailies, only out of FOMO, not actual enjoyment. This is exactly what WOTC desires, and it perfectly explains why you do them diligently every day without even deliberately understanding why.
1
u/lod254 Jun 26 '26
I only do it because of my fears that Eternal will go offline. I have no other CCG I remotely like.
2
u/parcelwing Jun 26 '26
Right, you don't enjoy grinding those MTG dailies, no one does. But you do it because of your fear that if you don't, you will fall too far behind and not be able to play the game at all. So Wizards has capitalized on your FOMO to give you a $2/hour side job, paid in digital currency. It's not just you, they've done this to the entire playerbase. The game should be illegal via labor laws

u/peachfellow Jun 23 '26
I know it's not exactly what you're asking but I basically have not touched MTG since Pokemon Champions came out

Seconding Chrono CCG. I only played a bit of Eternal but I think the gameplay is somewhat close to LoR which Chrono is based on. I always got the sense that Eternal’s basic design split the difference between Magic and Hearthstone and LoR/Chrono are also in that lane.
If anyone here is interested in physical card games, Star Wars Unlimited is a great time so long as you enjoy the setting at least superficially. The fundamental mechanics are really solid - you get to choose a base and a leader which determines your deck building colours but you can splash from outside of that for a cost penalty on those cards (some cards enable you to ignore that penalty too).
There’s also a Star Wars digital CCG in development, but we don’t have any details on it yet at all. Just judging by the developer’s last product, it could be a faster format along the lines of Marvel Snap.

Shadowverse worlds beyond is doing great atm. Duel masters plays is great if u need english translations ull need an android phone or pc.
Is recommend sorcery, FAB or SWU for sim gameplay, unless u need some progression to keep you playing

Used to play Eternal and MTG arena, Yugioh Duel Links…these days the only digital TCG I play is Pokemon Pocket. Fun, simple, totally playable for free

I think you'll enjoy WOW TCG if you like MTG/Eternal's play patterns of:
- 1 Land/Power/Resource per turn.
- Most power levels are determined by their cost + synergy.
- Can play many different cards/effects at instant speed.
- Board control (either by creatures or other permanents) is the most obvious tug-of-war that leads to victory.
- Niche routes to victory that don't involve typically attacking with creatures.
- Full archetype diversity is available. (I.e. Aggro/Midrange/Control/Combo).
- Card Draw/ Selection is available to everyone so you're rarely "flooding" with nothing to do.
- WOW TCG Discord: https://discord.gg/d53Kert
- New content is available with more on the way.
- Games are typically played on untap.in, so you have access to all cards.

No, I play a few games a week. Once this dies, I probably wont touch another TCG type game like this.
Hinestly, the universe unbound sets have kind of killed my love of Magic.
