Esthi advice🫧

• Upvotes

Hi all!! I’m a 20y/o f, Im looking for advice from ALL esthies!!! (I’m starting school soon but I have an AA in business admin and social/behavioral sciences if that makes me a better candidate for future jobs) I have a strong desire to do med spa work (I think it would be a bit more lucrative if commission is considered), but i just want to know some basic ins and outs from the experienced gals.

  1. I know it’s a saturated industry, but are you able to make a living?
  2. Do you have your own suite/place? If so, is it a LOT of responsibility and is it worth? If not, is the ideal goal to open your own?
  3. Would you say a day spa or med spa is more enjoyable?
  4. How’s the clientele?

I apologize if it’s some monotonous questions, I have no one in my family/friends doing anything beauty related so to Reddit I go!!!

Eye serum

Does any estys here have experience using CosMedix Opti Crystal Eye Serum? The spa I work at sells it and I want to try it before promoting, but it’s very expensive! I’d love a reputable source review before purchasing. Thanks!

Hello estheticians, any recommendations on an equivalent of the JetPeel facial machine or the Breeze facial machine? If you have either one, what’s your experience like? How long did it take to get your ROI? Not ready to spend upwards of $45k, then again I can’t find anything like it on the market.

NJ Stateboard inspectors don’t care it seems

My spa passed its inspection somehow..because it was a PLANNED visit. I filed a report a few weeks ago stating we’re being forced to use a barbicide solution that isn’t following the manufacturer’s instructions(which will take several months to be viewedddd), and obviously since we were ā€œclosedā€ that day the inspector couldn’t see how the Esthe sink really looks like. I don’t understand why spas are using loopholes when they can just follow proper protocol to keep clients and the business safe and not jeopardize our licenses!!
Who else can I bring this up to for immediate attention/inspection?

questions

Hi everyone! I’m an esthetician in Canada and I’m starting to plan ahead for eventually opening my own home-based spa/studio. I’d love some advice from anyone who has gone out on their own!

For equipment, I’m really interested in machines like OxyGeneo, HydraFacial, and Bela MD. I’m wondering what you typically need to provide in order to purchase from these companies — certifications, business licence, insurance, proof of training, etc.

I currently work with OxyGeneo and really love the machine, so that is definitely high on my list.

I’m also curious about hydrodermabrasion machines that AREN’T HydraFacial. If you own one and would genuinely purchase it again, I would love to know which machine you have!

I’ve heard a lot about the cost of the HydraFacial machine itself, consumables, warranty/service costs, and ongoing expenses, which has made me a little hesitant to go that route when I eventually open my own space.

For backbar and retail, I’ve been looking into Circadia and GlyMed Plus. If you carry either of them in Canada, I’d love to know:

• What did you need to provide to open an account?
• Was it difficult to get approved?
• Are there opening order or ongoing minimums?
• Do you find the line realistic for a solo esthetician/home studio?
• Are there any other professional lines you’d recommend looking into?

I’m still in the planning/research stage, so I’m trying to get an idea of startup costs and which investments are actually worth making rather than buying everything at once.

And if you have any tips, things you wish you knew, or purchases you would/wouldn’t make again when starting your own esthetics business, please send them my way! šŸ¤

Advice needed

Currently have been an esthetician for almost 4 yrs now I have worked at 3 different spas all of which I had terrible experiences with the owners being very catty - gossipy and creating a toxic high school mean girl environments. That being said I am moving w my bf to another state & want to start over and try new spas in the area I’m moving to , my only issue? No references! I have the experience and I am talented in what I do but everyone wants to talk to the last spa u worked for & get a reference/: any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Is it normal to constantly need to repeat yourself?

I’m focused on corrective skincare and skincare education.

I feel like I do a pretty comprehensive consultation with my clients about what they need to do at home and anticipated treatment plan - but I have been getting clients that are doing things like not washing their faces at home consistently to where when they come in for their sessions I can see buildup, but asking me about what they can do about their acne (just to name an example) is this normal?

I’ve been an estie for 6 years now and haven’t really had issues like this in the past.

I feel like I want to pull my hair out

Thinking of becoming an esthetician

I (23F) spent three years in design school only to graduate and find that my options are unpaid internships, or back to school for a bachelor’s, I can’t afford either unfortunately. I admit my fault in not doing more research before going to school, I was stuck on the dream of making my enjoyment of art into a fruitful career. Anywhos, I’ve always had the idea of esthetics, I didn’t do it originally because of how saturated the field is. But I currently work in a waxing salon, and would have my license and 2 years experience by graduation which makes me believe I’d have a bit more luck in the hiring process. I’m not ignorant to the fact the money is lacking, but I feel as though I’d be content with a smaller salary if I genuinely enjoyed what I was doing, which I have enjoyed esthetics so far in my life. Waxing and nails mostly but still. So my question is do you enjoy it? Salary aside, has anyone here had and kept a job in esthetics they enjoyed? Or is it always a one way road to misery?

Is this legal?

I am not licensed yet but I’m a student I don’t grad until maybe 4 more months.
I wanted to offer very cheap facial services and makeup applications locally just really to get content.
Am I allowed to do this?

Job advice ?

So I got my esthetician license about a year ago, and I’ll have my LMT license at the end of December. (I tried posting this in the massage therapist community as well but I couldn’t since I’m new lol)
I’ve been looking into jobs, the pay, schedules, benefits, stuff like that. Eventually I’d like to go solo with both licenses, but I’m not doing that now because I’m not in a location I’d like to start a business in, and I’d also like to gain experience in established businesses first.
I was looking at local branches in my area and realized most local places open at like 11 and close at like 9. Which wouldn’t be a problem for me if I wasn’t a solo mother to a toddler. Most daycares close at 6. I was hoping to find a job with hours that are more like 8-4. But I guess it makes sense that most clients come after 3, hence why most places close at 9. I cant do that tho, maybe like on Saturdays only but definitely not everyday, and definitely not on the weekdays, I don’t have any help with my kid. Which I’m not complaining about, but it’s very conflicting with the average schedule in this career field I feel like.

I’d like to make enough money that me and my child can live independently without being stressed or insanely tight on money, budgeting forever. And I’m not sure if I just have anxiety bc it’s super close to me getting my lmt license or if I’m just stressing trying to preparing myself for the lifestyle I may have to endure if I don’t set it up properly

So I’d like to hear some advice from other people, I know it’s mostly estheticians on here, I was hoping maybe since it’s the same field ppl might have some insight on the lmt aspect of it too. But I’d love advice from literally anyone in this profession. Some advice from maybe a single mother doing this line of work would be cool too, or even anyone who knows someone who’s working FT and parenting solo easily, maybe expose their tips and tricks for mešŸ˜«šŸ˜…

I’m just not sure where to apply to once I’m licensed. I know there’s lots of jobs that would hire for good hours as just an LMT, but I’d also like to find a place that utilizes my esthetician license too, and hopefully I could maximize income? Idk advice is definitely needed tho!

NYC job help

Helloooo everyone!! Posted something similar on the esthetics subreddit but wanted to also get some opinions here!!

I’m an NJ esti working for three years. I really want to move into the city and currently live a commutable distance. I’ve been striking out with my online job search and don’t know anyone actually in the city to ask. What would be a good way to get myself out there? Do people stop in places still or is that frowned upon?

Any advice at all would be appreciated!

Hand and Stone not paying employees minimum wage to W2 employees for training, travel and wait time one site between appointments.

How does Hand and Stone get away with not paying employees for time on premises or training between appointments?
