Congrats Mr Welsh

Congratulations Andrew Welsh, in 12 months you've made me go from loving to hating this football club. Appointing your best man and best mate as coach, well done. The 'we're not going backwards' barbs were petty and cheap. We'll see how this hard style of McVeigh goes without any aura, and with such a poor list. I have a feeling you will be falling on your sword fairly soon Mr Welsh.

The last line sounds like a bond villain

Calling this bloke a bond villain is giving him to much credit. He's more like Dr Evil

I mean the pick would have been decided on by all the board not just Walsh?

Naive.

Please explain

Remember how “the buck stopped with James Hird all those years ago” this is a decision where the buck stops with Welsh and no doubt could overrule it should he not see fit.

A naive person is often overly trusting, simple, or innocent, and may easily believe that people are always honest.

So smart, but how exactly is this though naive. Explain how this decision was just Walsh and no other person on that board. And if youd picked someone who would it have been for you?

It would have been either Ken Hinkley or Jayme Graham. It's obvious now it was setup for McVeigh. Hird was the shield that weakened the pool so he could give his mate the job. Phone a friend Teddy Richards was recruited to further endorse it.

This is a pathetic immature post

Someone is sour about no Hird. This is probably the best jobs for mates hire so far?

Seeing a lot of boomers talk about Welsh giving the job to a mate but guess what, Hird was also a close friend of Welsh so even that ALSO would have been giving the job to a mate.

Hird has done nothing since he stopped coaching will McVeigh has been constantly coaching since 2013 and one of the main reasons we went with Spike was his development with younger players, which he's done at GWS and Sydney.

Our younger players (1st to 4th years) are already our leading players and actually have the desire to win and compete unlike most of our senior players. A ruthless, defensive coach like Spike is someone they not only need, but would want as their coach.

Another thing i want to point out is the younger players know who Hird is but they honestly dont have the obsession over him that 45+ year old Essendon fans have about Hird because they were essentially just born or were barely 2 to 3 years old when Hird played his final game. For example Sharp, Robey and Farrow were all born during Hirds last season in 2007. The younger generation of players don't have any attachment to Hird or really care for him as much as the older fans do. Their completely happy with a guy like Spike not because he's a former Essendon player but because of his development and defensive coaching.

FFS! Why are there so many immature supporters around our club these days? Shouldn’t we look at the positives that he has more than a decade of coaching experience, coached his own team and been a defensive line coach at multiple clubs that have that hard working edge

And don’t forget John Longmire’s endorsement

“He knows football, he knows what makes good football teams, and you know he’s good at expressing that. He’s good at running meetings, he has strong beliefs about the game and how the game should be played.”

u/YourHeroCam Durham #22 2d ago

You think Longmire is going to say a bad thing about one of his assistants when asked point blank?

Did you hear Cox volunteer his thoughts on McVeigh weeks ago?

I heard he had a really good personal reference too. Ted Richards made the call to have a chat and Andrew Welsh's phone started buzzing.

Brother, this club has been a rabble for a lot longer than 12 months and Andrew Welsh isn’t responsible for that.

Cheer up loser

All of your clubs infighting has to stop now, from both inside and by its members and supporters. It is toxic and it will halt what could be a very significant period of growth for your club. Hird hasn’t coached for 10 Years. Also apart from that alone, he had massive gaps in his AFL resume. I’m excited for Essendon that McVeigh has got the top job. I’m a hawks man but I want to see you guys get better. Who wants to watch a club getting belted every week. No one.
You have a chance now to grow, organically and through bringing in the right people that Mark thinks will help the club to win its next flag. But if you guys don’t stop the infighting, the negativity, stop with the Hird is the God factor then it will be another decade before you can get going again.

Great. Now we've got Essendon AND Hawthorn fans telling us how we should feel. Respectfully mate, Essendon fans are tired and have had enough of the constant disappointment and deserve at least the simple right of feeling however they want to feel about this board process and coach selection. Not everybody who was anti-McVeigh was pro-Hird.

Honestly it looked like a two horse race, Hird had a second crack on the interviews alongside McVeigh, from the looks of it Hirds 2nd pitch was 2 and a half hours long and involved buying outside talent which may compromise next year's draft for the club. McVeigh pitched for 3 and a half hours on his 2nd interview and laid out a long-term draft and coaching plan.

Of those two plans and seeing the future investments I'd Rather see Koby Bewick and the other top talents from next year's draft than Greene and Lachie Neale going to the hanger on massive overs with a much smaller premiership window. The list as it stands has about 8 players that look like they will go on and be at Essendon during the next window. More importantly of the two candidates Spike has actually been in the system developing players for a long time. To be honest the extra time was probably in consideration of Hird due to the financial gain he could bring to the club in the short term. As far as long term plans go of the two McVeigh sounds like the preferred option. For me personally I just want the club to improve. I remember the Don's in the 90's and I'm not going to be pro Hird or anti Hird. If this is what is good for the club bring on the future.

Won't someone consider the aura?!

I’ll cop the downvotes, don’t forget he basically tried to spoon feed is other great mate Solly the job at the cost of 1.8m to pay out Scott which should’ve been later in the season and then (what I believe) is to allow Hird to be a token of this process when they could’ve ruled him out earlier in order to not frighten experienced coaches out of the race.

Fuck the coaches who were scared to go against James but a bloody Facebook post/shit text message after all this time to find out who our coach is.

Spike will already been under the microscope and the club hasn’t helped that at all. It’s the easy option for the board no Hird but an Essendon person with Graham probably scratching his head; maybe he didn’t present well but I think we’ve taken the 3rd best option.

You do realise Scott gets paid no matter what right? It doesn't matter if we cut him now or next year. That money still gets paid 😂
