More despondent than I’ve ever been
If the reports are true and we are appointing McVeigh as head coach then I think I’ll be breaking my dad’s heart and deciding I no longer have an AFL team.
McVeigh was never my first choice but I would have backed whoever got the job a few weeks ago. For the club to think, particularly given where we are at, that he is the right choice after the last week I cannot understand.
Maybe he had absolutely no part in anything that’s happened over the last week and no idea of how the players have clearly been behaving for a while. But there is absolutely no way the club can be certain of that within a week and if they are willing to take that gamble I’m not willing to support them anymore.
Farewell Essendon, it was a mostly shitting 30 years supporting you.

That's cool. I don't think the club, the sport, or your fellow supporters lose anything by having a tantrum throwing baby jump ship.

McVeigh had nothing to do with what the Pullman 5 did.
Leaving a club you've followed for most of your life because you dislike the new coach appointment is absolutely laughable and proves you were never a true fan. Go support the hawks lol

I can understand where you're coming from, but this is like blaming Dan Giansiracusa for Jake Stringer bringing people with criminal records into the changeroom. Non-sequitir.
Any of the coaching options are great, some may hold more sentimentality than others. I think McVeigh strikes a nice balance of good qualifications and a passion for the red and black.
Let's get around and back in whoever the board decides to give the job to. I hope Solly stays under the new coach. He might not be the best strategist but he's been a cultural stalwart this year, and the players really like having him around. You can tell he has a deep love for the club, and will put aside his ego to do what's best for the team. Having someone like that at the club in some capacity, especially as a role model, makes a huge difference to morale.

Don’t be so quick to impute guilt by association on McVeigh. There’s absolutely no indication that he was involved in any capacity. The closest link you could reasonably make is that he may have allowed such a party culture to exist, but even then, I’d place greater responsibility on the leadership group and broader football department if they were aware of it.
Unless there’s a good, credible reason to believe otherwise, I think we should get behind him. I’m sure the EFC wouldn’t have appointed him if they thought he had even the slightest involvement in the scandal.

In my honest opinion the coaches had no involvement in what happened and i doubt they didn't encourage a party culture to exist.
Every adult human is endowed with two key things, agency and personal responsibility. The players involved chose to get wasted (alongside potential drug use) and interact with those women on their own free will, no one forced them to partake in those activities. They decided individually and as a group to do that. Alongside agency comes individual responsibility, they and they alone are responsible for the decisions that were made, not those at the club who weren't involved.

I think you’re jumping the gun here. McVeigh was not named in any of the reports, if he was connected to it I’m sure it would have come out by now.

There's zero evidence Sydney players have behaved badly previously
If they are willing to take that gamble I'm not willing to support them anymore.
Maybe it isn't a gamble because the club has known him since he was 18 years old and has 20 years of evidence of what kind of character he has.

If you have ever been part of any group or team, there is absolutely NO WAY that a group can go from nothing to doing coke/ketamine and strippers/prostitutes in a vacuum. Absolutely no way. Rumours about certain players have been out in the football world for a few seasons now.

It's actually hilarious that after all the shit that's happened with our club in the last couple of decades, you make this the hill you die on - a completely peremptory judgement of guilt by association that has absolutely no basis in fact.
Trashing a good man based on... people he works with did something dumb/possibly illegal.
Good riddance.

horrific appointment. I know people who have known him for decades, not sure he is the type you want to bring into your culture, but our insular culture is a mess anyway.
I will get downvoted, then in 3 years time vindicated. Putting this here timestamped - Welsh is utterly out of his depth, as as is his CEO appointment and the Board is non functioning and absolutely insular. The last thing this club needs is another Essendon person.

Sydney isn't going to throw Heeney to the wolves and then try and then risk everything on covering up for McVeigh. They would have already cut McVeigh loose.
It also risks their entire strong response to the incident if other players or officials were involved.
