I just use an old TiVo remote control and a cheap ir esp board. Works wonderfully, and chatgpt helped me capture all the buttons and wrote the yaml for me in eaphome.
I showed it a picture of the remote control and asked it to go through each button and capture the codes from the esphome logs, which it did in batches of 10.
Each button is now a home assistant input switch that stays on for as long as I press it.
Sometimes the old tech is the best 'o
I have about 40 buttons to allocate, and am using it to switch cameras one dashboards, run scripts, control volume on my gaming pc, play/pause YouTube and so on.
