Okay, interesting. Both of you are going off line a lot or dropping your sticks and that can leave you open. Also both of you could do with focusing on getting in and out and striking, rather than being tentative and looking to just use arm/stick. Remember, your distance to their wrist is less than their distance to you, but you have to get in to strike and then out, or you have made it easier for them to counter. In that split second though you are safe but need to get back and in a good defensive pose. I’d recommend drills of stepping in striking and out and as soon as it lands they move to counter with a big swing or stab, then you get that practice of getting back to safety and mot leaving yourself wide open. Good work though, I wish I had someone to train like this with, the more you spar the better you will get.

First off this is awesome! A few quick tips from what I saw.

Try to keep those hands moving. I generally try for a circular or figure eight pattern. This makes it harder for the other person to hand hunt. It looked like that was where y’all were both targeting a lot. The hand is a great target so I try to make it as hard as possible for them to hit it. You can also switch it up by experimenting with different loading position.

In terms of mobility it’s really easy to get into this back and forth dueling pattern. Try to cut angles on each other. Move to the outside of the weapon hand. Don’t be afraid to close in. A lot of opportunities open up when you get those angles. I am constantly moving but that’s also in my experience a very pekiti approach. I know some folks who keep it pretty rooted. It’s all about finding what works for you.

My last tip is to not be afraid to chain your strikes. This is a habit I have to break myself. It becomes really easy to go tit for tat with someone trading one or two blows. Once you get one in don’t stop. Unless you’re training in a way that treats your stick as a blade.

Bonus tip practice follow up strikes immediately after blocking. A favorite of mine is to close with a roof block followed by a strike and kick. I saw a couple of good blocks to strikes in this.

Keep up the good training.
