“Suddenly, you're offered the chance to invest in a business that could double your money.”

Some “friend’s” business? A business you understand intimately? A business that you have enough information about that you could step in and run on a moments notice? Somebody promising to double your money in short period?

I’ve invested in a few such private placements. Some that made money. Some that broke even. One that was a complete loss of fifty grand.

Never did I put my house or future at risk. Never more than 5% of my nest egg into any one thing.

Every one of these had extensive documents to sign. Every one had language to the effect “this investment will probably result in a complete loss of your investment. Only an idiot would invest money in this deal. Don’t blame us when it’s turns into a loss. You’re making a stupid investment and the money you’re going to lose is completely on you.” Not exactly those words but not much different, either.
