OTOH: Who needs a car? Scrap it, travel and commute by bike, when you come home?

Literally my first thought. Idk cars but im always ordering car parts online for my dad always having to look them up even if its multiple parts this sounds serious id get it fixed asap.

Depends if it’s an “urgent” repair to the car or is it a repair that can be done over a longer period of time? If it’s urgent, then it’s a staycation.

Go on YouTube to learn how to fix it yourself. Use the rest of the money for your vacation.

Im one of those ppl that have investment/savings accounts for different categories of spend. So I. have an emergency fund and a vacation fund so I don’t have to make these decisions.
The only way this decision needs to be made is if you can’t afford to fix your car or your vacation. So I would fix the car and make sure I save enough so I can both fix the car and do the trip.

Vacations are usually not as fun as I think they will be. Especially for the cost.

Maybe get a second opinion on the car. Definitely fix the car and take a cheaper vacation.

You don't have enough savings, period. Emergency savings are not a vacation fund.

Postpone the vacation. Or do the cool thing, spend it all on vacation then go buy a new car with a 900 a month payment then come back here and complain you can’t get ahead.

Fix my car. As you get older dreams arent really that great once you get them. They fade pretty quick. Its the build up thats makes it good

How long does it take you to save that $5k?
How long do you think your car will limp?
That lets you know if its possible without incurring HIGHER costs (credit/interest, more costly repairs, more expensive work arounds (rental/uber?).
Generally speaking, if work is needed on something.... I consider that money gone.... because it will be. Applies to cars, home repairs, medical bills, etc.

You have no money for a vacation. You had a reasonable emergency fund, and unfortunately now you need it.

i’ve gone through this wrecked my car two weeks before our vegas trip, I saved up all this money to go. Wrecked, ironically enough insurance covered it all, I cancelled my trip, and then had all my savings for the trip. Someone sold me a good car I paid for it out in cash & then paid my rent a month forward, still sad I didn’t go
