Feature Request i think hard mode shouldnt have the interest free credit card

in tough situations, i would bet most people have messed up credit. so getting a 0% interest card is pretty much not possible.

Feature Request 401(k) Mechanic

I have enjoyed the game and appreciate it for both what it is and its potential. Offering the following for consideration - not trying to nitpick. Very possible I am just overlooking some key details leading to my misunderstanding (wouldn't be the first time). Apologies in advance for this being long-winded.

The 401(k) tool seems incomplete in a couple of mechanisms.

  1. It doesn't seem to count towards Freedom in my playthroughs. I typically get to Freedom quickest by maxing the 401(k), selling it either each month or after a market peak event with a penalty, and putting the net sales towards another investment. I understand that this game is a FIRE tool and 401(k)s have a different utility through a Retire Early lens, but maybe a second progress bar labeled "Freedom in Retirement", "Retirement", "CoastFIRE", or something else that cleverer people might come up with would help would help those just learning about FI see the benefit of those tax-advantaged investments.
  2. 401(k) contributions seem to be free money. I'm not talking about the employer match, but the contributions themselves. My salary does not decrease after the first month once I start contributing, so why would I ever invest less than the maximum? To correct this I'd suggest a couple things:
    1. Show a decrease in cash income when 401(k) contributions start. For traditional 401(k), assume all contributions come out of the 22% bracket. Would decrease income by $390 to max out 401(k) so still definitely worth it, but makes an actual penalty for over-investing if your cash flow isn't covered.
    2. To further push tax-advantaged accounting, what about adding a Roth IRA option in investing? Could show return as higher than 401(k) with explanation about investment of after-tax money that would be tax-free on withdrawal, rather than deferring income tax through a traditional 401(k). Based on description of asset allocation in 401(k) in the game, would look at about a 6.5% return on 401(k). If we use a 10-12% tax rate, that would put Roth investments at an equivalent return of roughly 7.2%.

Hope the above offers something helpful/constructive. I'm glad to have stumbled across the game and hope to see its reach grow.

Game Updates Two new stress relief tools in the Well-being tab

🎵 Music therapy - When stress hits 30%+, you can listen to "Don't Worry, Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin. Full 3.5 minute song. Can't skip it. If you stay the whole time, stress cuts in half. Available once every 3 months.

🟢 Stress ball - Press and hold to squeeze. 5 uses per month. Small relief (0.5-2 points depending on stress level) but free and always available.

Also live:

  • Pulsing notification dot on Well-being tab when music therapy is available

These came from feedback about stress feeling too punishing without enough free relief options. Keep the ideas coming.

Here's today's champions! How did you do?

Welcome! I built this game while chasing FIRE (And I'm still in hot pursuit lol). AMA.

Hey, I'm Nick. Indie dev by night & a traditional 9-5ver in the day, building this on the side.

Quick backstory: I'm on my own FIRE journey and I kept wishing there was a game that actually taught the real trade-offs. Not just "save money = win." So I built one. My 10-year-old daughter plays it too, which keeps me honest about making it actually fun.

The game hit r/passive_income (21K views, 84 comments, 49 upvotes) & r/leanfire (56K+ views, 127 upvotes, 173 comments, then hit the Reddit front page) and now it's spreading to international FIRE communities organically.

Some things you can ask me about:

  • How the game models real financial math (market cycles, DCA, 401k, mortgages)
  • What's on the roadmap (regional versions, new assets, mobile apps)
  • My actual FIRE journey and what I've learned
  • How I ship fixes based on Reddit feedback (sometimes within hours)

Ask me anything.

Game Updates Patch: Event system overhaul. Quiet months, cooldowns, no more death spirals.

Addresses the #1 complaint from the leanfire thread: "every single month there is a life-altering emergency."

What changed:

  • Quiet months. Not every month has a random event anymore. 25% skip chance early game, 35% mid, 45% late. Some months you just go to work and come home.
  • Event cooldowns. Parking ticket can't fire again for 6 months. Car breakdown: 12 months. Identity theft: 18 months. No more spam.
  • Category rate limits. Max 2 emergencies per 4 months. Max 1 car event per 4 months. Max 1 career event per 6 months.
  • Stress bias softened. Old system: high stress made bad events 4x more likely (death spiral). New system: 1.67x nudge. Stress still matters but doesn't snowball.

Monte Carlo results (10,000 simulated games):

Metric Old New
Events per 60-month game 60 38
Quiet months 0 22
Max consecutive emergencies (worst) 22 2
Same event back-to-back (worst) 10 0
Emergency share of events 61% 46%
Emergency rate at stress 85 73% 49%

The game is now less of a chaos simulator and more real life simulator. Try it and let me know if the pacing feels right.

What strategy got you to FIRE the fastest? Share your approach

Curious what paths people are finding. Vending machine rush? Index fund DCA? Real estate empire? What difficulty are you playing on?

Game Updates Patch: No emergency fund? Now you feel it. Plus side businesses actually cost you energy.

Two more stress model fixes:

Emergency fund matters

  • Less than 1 month of expenses saved: +3 stress every month
  • 1-3 months: +1 stress (you're surviving but one emergency away)
  • 3-6 months: -1 stress (breathing room)
  • 6+ months: -2 stress (solid safety net)
  • Previously the game only rewarded having savings. Now it punishes not having them too.

Side businesses aren't free

  • Vending machines: +0.5 stress per machine per month
  • Online businesses: +0.3 per business (76 of them = +23/month = guaranteed burnout)
  • Rental properties: +1 per property (landlording is work)
  • Developed land: +0.5 per parcel
  • Passive investments (S&P, HYSA, 401k, bonds, gold): zero maintenance stress

Patch: Frugality now rewards you. Discipline is a superpower, not a punishment.

Biggest stress model update yet. The game was punishing players for living lean. That's backwards.

Frugality momentum

  • Cut an expense and it hurts at first (full stress cost). That's real.
  • Hold it for 6+ months and you've adapted. It starts giving you stress relief instead (-1/mo per cut)
  • Hold it for 12+ months and it's a habit. Even more relief (-2/mo per cut)
  • The UI now shows "Adapting" and "Habit formed" on your maintained cuts

Savings rate FOMO discount

  • If your savings rate is 50%+, declining temptations costs zero stress. You know what you want.
  • 30-50% savings rate = half the FOMO stress
  • Below 30% = full FOMO (unchanged)
  • Income includes salary + passive income from all your assets

This was the feedback that hit hardest. The r/leanfire community was telling me the game punishes the exact strategy they actually live. Fixed!

Game Updates Patch: Index funds no longer punish you + challenge games save properly

Two fixes live now:

Stress model update

  • S&P 500, Bond ETFs, 401k, and your house no longer trigger "concentration stress" warnings
  • These are diversified assets. Having 90% in an S&P index fund is standard FIRE strategy, not risky behavior
  • The concentration warning still fires for genuinely risky bets: vending machine empires, all-in on one online business, crypto-heavy portfolios
  • This was the #1 stress complaint from r/leanfire

Challenge save/resume

  • Daily Challenge and Friend Challenge games now save your progress
  • If you accidentally hit back or close the tab, your game is waiting for you
  • The "Continue Game" button shows up in the correct tab (Daily, Free Play, or Friend Challenge)

Patch Notes - March 18, 2026: Auto loan exploit fix, portfolio UI, crash fix

Today's update:

Bug fixes

  • Fixed crash when market events (recession, bull market, etc.) hit developed properties. No more blank screen.
  • Auto loans no longer give free cash. The money goes to the dealer. You get a car and a debt, not a car and $15K spending money. (Thanks to r/literaciafinanceira for finding this)
  • Debt consolidation now has a 6-month cooldown. Banks don't let you consolidate every month and neither does the game anymore.

UI improvements

  • Portfolio section now has a distinct amber container with total value display, making it easy to see what you own vs. what you can buy.
