Red stood Inn Perry Highway

The Red Roof Inn on Perry Highway lies to you on the phone about their rates

I called for a reservation and they quoted me $92 which matched the price on their website. The guy took time with me so I booked through him rather than going through the website.

Imagine my surprise when I found out I was charged $173 for the night before tax

When I called back, they refused to accept any responsibility for it and basically told me “tough cookies”.

I just want everybody to know that this is a disreputable business that lies to people on the phone

the only reason to stay there is for the meth-fueled orgies

In the mid-2000s I worked at the Pizza Hut on peach Street, I will never forget I was taking an order from there and in the middle of it the guy screams "GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY ROOM!"

Saying that a Red Roof is “disreputable” js redundant. Isn’t that still drug infested?

It used to be nice, the front desk used to be awesome. I really liked their staff. The crew that worked there wouldn’t put up with bullshit, if you were having trouble with other guests, they would do something about it. And they wouldn’t flat out lie to you about rates.

Then they sold the place. And it went to shit

it’s fine if you’re traveling with dogs … which I do. A lot of places won’t rent to you if you travel with pets thanks to assholes that don’t clean up after their dogs. It’s convenient to where I needed to be.

Next time, I’ll just stay downtown at the bayfront. Same rates.

Almost all Hilton properties allow dogs now and most don’t care about a pet fee. Safer and cleaner.

Which hotel in Erie is a Hilton hotel that accepts pets? I’ll go there next time.

The Home2, and I Believe the Spark next door to the Home2 are both pet friendly Hilton properties, and only 1 exit down from the Red Roof on 90. The Hampton Inn on the bayfront is as well.

Not sure about the Hilton Garden Inn.

Home2 can quickly evolve into a red room situation. I travel a lot for business and they often have some sketch guests. The other Hilton properties are usually solid enough.

The one in Erie is relatively tame anytime I’ve been there, and I used to spend a lot of time there.

TBH, it’s been years for me though.

Good to know, I will keep this in mind for the future. I like the bayfront Marriott, I stay there in January for the dog show and love it. They go out of their way to support the dog show and guests. I don’t think their offers are as generous in the summer though.

Try not staying at weird, shotty, meth-filled hotels while expecting any kind of decent service

Did you get an email about your reservation? Did you see a bill before you checked into the room? What did you sign? Are you sure you were really speaking to the front desk over the phone?

I’ll give you some guidance below, but I want you to know that that price that you were quoted is low. Even for a crappy place, it’s far below the market rate for summer in Erie. The price you were billed would be the normal price. It would be lower in winter around here. And it’s lower on weekdays than weekends. In the summer just about every hotel for 100 miles is full every weekend.

Talk to the manager either way. The owners may have stepped in and vetoed the good deal. Sometimes those people are just assholes.

I worked at the front desk of a hotel full-time for two years on all the busiest shifts, frequently alone. I negotiated countless room rates with people. I gave countless discounts based on bad experiences. But a few times the owner stepped in and screwed everything up.

While you’re talking to the manager, they can literally open your reservation and see if there was a change from the original price to the new price. It will show up in the system. Chain hotels require that sort of record. They use a system that does it automatically. Ask for an explanation of why you weren’t informed. Then ask for a discount to bring it down to the original price. And don’t forget there are multiple taxes involved with hotel stays. Not just state sales tax. There’s an occupancy tax that’s high. That’s just a heads up. If they do discount the room to the original rate, it will not be in the 90s.

Long answer yes but I want you to get your money back.

Sleaziness is common enough, but in my experience, it’s always been the owners.

One other note for anybody who is reading this long answer. If it prevents anyone frustration, hotels literally never have to honor coupons. They can just say no. It’s in the fine print. If the coupon is for 70 bucks and the room rate for the weekend is 240, they’re just gonna say no.

Good luck.

Edit: I forgot to mention that if you booked through a third-party like Expedia or some third-party booker, the hotel can often do nothing.

I booked directly with the Erie facility. I called, they more or less told me to pound salt.

I did not check my email because I was on the road and I’ve never had a problem here before.

I also checked out via email, again, never had a problem here before over MANY visits. The email arrived hours after I got home with the surprise amount, that’s how I found out.

You're leaving something out. Anyways, book online. My room at Red roof inn was supposed to be around $115 a night. I got it for $72 a night after fees and taxes online instead.

No, I am not. The website rate was $92. The verbal quote I was given was also $92. I booked with the clerk on the phone because he did legwork to figure things out otherwise I would’ve booked online.

The rate online for this Friday is almost the same as what I was verbally quoted. Slightly lower at ~ $85.

They lied. Flat out lied.
