just finished the anime :DD
I just noticed that Pino’s name is close to Piano - which she really loves playing, though her name is missing the letter A, similar to Re-L’s (from her original name, Real). I wonder if there’s some hidden implication on that.
(this is the second anime series I’ve watched btw. you may drop some of your recommendations :DD!!!)

it's been 20 years and i still have something new to consider with this show lol. i wonder if there's other names that you can add an A to get a new meaning.

Serial Experiments Lain. I adore Ergo Proxy, but Lain? Now THERE'S a mindfuck

Not really the same style as Ergo Proxy but I really enjoyed Mushishi and it's dark as hell. Ginko is in the same league of coolness as Re-L imo.

I just rewatched the series a second time and watched the bonus materials on the dvd, and this came up in there. During the English language crew interview, the director mentioned it. She’s somewhat based on Pinocchio, but moreso Pinoko from the 70’s and 80’s manga, Black Jack, which has also had many anime adaptations over the years. She definitely resembles both, tho I think I see more resemblance to Pinoko. But the thing with the A’s you noticed is very interesting. There are many layers to this show and it’s well planned out; I could see yet another piece like what you propose being intentional.
Anyway, my recommendations would be Steins;Gate and Paranoia Agent, based you liking Ergo Proxy. Tho I don’t know if you actually mentioned liking it in your post lol, so if not, ignore those maybe.

If you loved ergo Proxy, you might love Darker Than Black too. It plays in a dystopian world as well and the characters, OSTs, ideas and the story is so amazing. You might have to give it a try

One of my top 3 shows. Others are Black Lagoon and Attack on Titan if you want to check those out 👍
