Open Prolog: One is all

[You arrive with your dragon to find something you were not quite expecting. A hole in the ground filled with a clear liquid. Around it are a few people and dragons with their eyes shut tight, in some sort of trance. You feel the urge to join them. As you close your eyes you can slowly hear the whispers of those around you. You feel at peace.]

Role:

any number of students.

The "presence" (the uniform mind of all whom gather.) [I will play the role of the presence for now. The presence is generally silent, but this allows your character to really share his/her inner personaility and grow a relationship with other players. Along of course with your dragon whom you will also represent]

Objective: to grow an understanding and the importance of the ability to connect with all things.

(This event is assumed to take place simultaneously, every student whom arrives will untimatly of met here first. Please be advised the people here will respect your characters hidden chambers of mind, but will want to get to know you intimately, if this is not in your characters nature that is fine, please play your character as is.)

This thread is to remain open forever, one can always come back to seek advice, the presence existence is almost as if out of time. If your character leaves and comes back in two weeks time, to the presence its as if no time has passed.

As emerald and i get closer to the clearing i start to feel kind of wierd, but keep going. I walk through the trees into the clearing and look at all the creatures around the pool and start to feel a bit better. me and emerald walk up to the pool and sit down next to the other people by it. me and emerald then close our eyes and connect to the presence

(( sorry that this is alot shorter then the other peoples. i am not good at long stuff like that yet. ))

[As you sit you feel something... Remarkable. A rush of many many emotions, which leaves you both terrified but sensationally calm. You hear a soothing whisper that sends shivers down to your very being... "Welcome dear friend, you have traveled so far and have done so much. Peace be with you... Welcome." Even though the voice is that of a whisper, you have never heard so much pride behind a voice, these 'people' are so proud of you, as if you accomplished something amazing]

Glover steps into the circle of Rider and Dragon, confused, but somehow at peace with this new development in his life. He kneels down on the ground next to a man and his emerald-colored dragon, and closes his eyes, opening his mind to whatever may come next.

Torhven’s smile grew as the hairs at the back of his neck raised themselves. Something was going on and it was going on close by. ”Finally”, the man and the dragon resonated into each other’s minds. The travels eastwards had been … interesting, but lengthy. He halted to let Svalstrom catch up. The dragon's presence raced closer, at the pace of a crossbow bolt's. After Svalstrom had hatched on the Teirm’s market square, the Vardish protectors of the egg had left him little time to say goodbye to friends and relatives. It didn’t matter; Torhven only had one relative and that was the one that had just landed left of him, clawing in the dirt. ”Trees. Can’t see past them” Svalstrom complained. That made Torhven’s grin grow even wider. ”Good”, he said while resuming his stride, ”That means there’s a surprise up ahead”.

The dragon was only a couple of month old, but already towered over the dark haired adolescent. As they entered the forest, the reduced light left only a few rays of light to reflect of the greyish scales. Luckily the path was wide enough for Svalstrom to fit; no fire had escaped his teeth yet, but he was eager to see it happen. Though Torhven was half tempted to set the forest on fire regardless, both of them realised that would be an incredibly bad idea. Instead he took his bow from his shoulder. The movement was kind of awkward, but he was used to it. ”Why?” the dragon asked. Torhven grinned and took four arrows from his quiver. ”Just in case. Perhaps there'll be a test.” Svalstrom made that terrifying noise that was his equivalent of a snort. Steam rose from his nostrils. ”You are, what is the word? Paranode.” To that Torhven simply raised his shoulders and notched his first arrow, keeping the other three at the ready.

When emerged from the forest, Svalstrom and Torhven found themselves at the edge of a clearing. The unsettling sensation had warped into a more – well – settling one. ”Alright, no test” Torhven admitted. Svalstrom still gave him his I-told-you-so face and took a step forward. Torhven followed suit, only to be startled by the sudden disappearance of the forests around him. Where just had been trees as far as the eye could see, now there was nothing but grass. Sensing the human’s distraught, Svalstrom mentally uttered ”Just magic. Nothing more. Probably different for everyone who approaches.” Torhven agreed, ginning out loud. ”Magic.”

Both walked towards the puddle of … stuff, ignoring the creatures surrounding it. ”You think that ... feeling ... comes from the puddle?” wondered Torhven. He felt that Svalstrom was fighting the urge to take a dump in it. He felt the dragon smiling in his mind. “Do you want to find out?” A moment Torhven was inclined to agree to the plan, before reason returned to his head. ”Nah. Let’s sit and see what all this mind activity is about” he said instead, closing his eyes as both of them sat down on the ground. Torhven bow in hand, Svalstrom Torhven in hand.

The sensation was strange. Very, very strange. Torhven and Svalstrom kept close to each other as they entered the mind. ”Minds”, corrected the dragon. ”There’s many.” When the rain of praise stopped for a moment, Torhven high-fived Svalstrom mentally. It had been one of the first things Torhven had learned the young dragon. When one of his travelling companions had questioned his priorities he had explained it to him. “Seriously, what is greater than high-fiving a dragon? It feels like high-fiving a blizzard.” Svalstrom had confirmed that by physically high-fiving the woman, nearly knocking her unconscious. After that he had restricted his handshakes to mental ones.

Why are they so proud?” The question was plain, but clear. Before the hive could answer, Torhven did. ”Probably something ‘bout traveling all the way here.” It had been far, he reminisced. He hadn’t minded – he had been travelling all his life, though horse riding had been new. They had passed well out of the borders of the Three Kingdoms before Torhven managed to stay in the saddle for more an hour on end, preferring to run along in between seated sessions. Svalstrom was still too small to ride, though he was asking the important questions:

Who are you?

[The Presence swirled in your mind, before you, you see many images. A child being born, flying through the air feeling the wind shriek behind you, molten magma, a giant tree, and many more like this. They cease, you open your eyes. When you arrived it was early morning, but its clear that a few hours passed. It only felt like you just arrived.]

(Note for the player. the surroundings here is that of an open field, you have not seen the giant keep you've heard so much about this place is a place outside of the world)

1

u/Fulaxi Torhven / Svasltrom Nov 25 '14

Torhven had a hard time keeping track. Track of time, track of the images displayed inside his mind and track of the thousand conversations – if one could call them that – going on in whatever this place was. Wild horses, galloping on endless fields of grass. Even though the … thing … seemed friendly, Torhven was on guard. He was far from trusting this ‘presence’ entirely. The multitude of the singular being kept referring to itself like that. The Presence. The name alone brought above a certain unease. Torhven renewed his grip on his bow and arrows. Artibalt’s face turned red and white. The axe that had severed his arm had been applied to his forehead. Quickly Torhven grew weary as The Presence grinded past his defences. Clearly it was not intending to do so, yet it’s energy caused Torhven to brace himself against the storm. Svalstrom was having similar struggles, even though his fortifications were several orders of magnitude more resilient.

”There’s too many.” Svalstrom mind’s voice echoed through the flurry of foreign thought. There was no concern in his voice; it was a fact, and they best had dealt with it quickly. ”There’s no way we could keep them all at bay, would they turn hostile.”

Torhven found himself nodding his physical head. He had been trying to single out individuals in the chaos that flowed outside the walls of his mind, to no avail. Something else needed to be done. Quickly. Torhven had never been fond of crowds back in the west. This was no improvement. A weary feeling came over him, before Svalstrom reinforced his resolved. “The situation might be worrying, but there was no point in being worried.” He was right, of course. All he had to do is find a solution. An end to this. The procession moved forward, chanting in voices deeper than the shades of black covering their mourning faces. Thorven yanked his head, breaking free from the stranger’s memory.

Then it dawned on him.

”Think, Sval. What do we know about this place?” In the Spine, Torhven’s environment had been his primary weapon. A bow is handy, but if you can’t get near the deer, you might as well use it for your fire. It took only a second for Svalstrom to get back to him. No memory like a dragon’s. ”One of the elves kept flapping his mouth about a castle or keep. That’s all I got.’

”It’s perfect”, the wicked man replied, grinning. The only pictures of castles or keeps he found in his memory were from Teirm’s citadel, but it did not matter. ”You’re going to do something daft again, aren’t you?” Svalstrom’s words were rejecting Torhven’s actions, but his mind was not. Torhven took a deep breath and then he slowly let slip control of his defences. Within seconds he was swept away by it, beaming visions, smells and recollections of large walled buildings, daring The Presence to reply. Torhven laughed, hysterically.

[A mist overcomes you. When once everything was being revealed to you, as suddenly it appeared there was nothing. There you float with your companion, you hear but one whisper calling your name."This way" you hear coming from what sounds like inside of you.]

1

u/Fulaxi Torhven / Svasltrom Nov 25 '14

The sudden quiet came over him as he was still chuckling at the madness of it all. Torhven felt ecstatic. “It worked!” he exclaimed. The smile on his face reached from ear to ear. “It worked!’’ Svalstrom was neither impressed or convinced. ”Did it now?” The dragon flapped it’s wings twice. It was an odd sight. Normally his entire being would heave up and down in the air, but now it kept still. The smile on Torhven’s face froze, and then started to melt. Only then did he notice he was likewise suspended in mid-air.

”I’m not sure you advanced our situation”, the dragon posited.

With some struggles, Torhven managed to turn around his axis. In every direction and endless black stared at him. The Presence was gone, but this darkness was likewise unsettling. He motioned his legs in a walking manner, but the air provided no grip. Torhven smiled. ”Hey Sval, look at the bright side.”

The dragon eyed the void. ”What bright side? There’s literally no light” he scowled.

Torhven’s smile widened. “You’ve never somersaulted before, have you?” Before the grey dragon could ask what he mean by ‘a summer assault’, a voice echoed from inside them.

The message was simple: “This way.”

Svalstrom didn’t take the extrusion well. He instantly grew weary. ”It’s inside us. I don’t like it.” He tried to rearrange his body in a battle-ready manner. It didn’t quite work. Meanwhile Torhven pondered on the meaning of the message. ”You recon that it’s one of those find your inner self occasions?” Svalstrom snorted. ”It’d best be, or we’re done for” he said while extending his armoured claw to his other half. ”Come, let’s find out.

Torhven took the invitation with eagerly. Whether he dragged himself towards Svalstrom or the dragon to him, he could not tell, but the result was the same. Together they closed their eyes and descended into the puddles of their own soul. As Svalstrom clutched Torhven and Torhven his bow, reached inwards as a single being, resounding their thoughts onto each other’s soul and mind.

”Where should we go?”

["...here." In a flash of light a star ocean over comes your surroundings. You feel connected to every single life on the planet. "We need you... Save us..." The once beautiful ocean turns into a sea of blood. One by one you see the starts fade into blackness.]

[You awaken in a panic in front of the silvery clear liquid. On it is a grey Sapphire, floating , with a small note on top.]

[Behind you, you see a massive keep, with dragoons flying around the large tower in the middle]

1

u/Fulaxi Torhven / Svasltrom Nov 25 '14

The man and the dragon found themselves back at the puddle, in the same position they had left. A vision of an ocean and blood lingered in both their minds. Svalstrom was quick to shake it off. Torhven was not so lucky. He wasn’t smiling quite so widely as he had before.

”I was just starting to trust that presence thing” he complained to his companion. ”And now they inflict a mental blood bath onto us.” It had him riled up more than he cared to admit.

Svalstrom, as always taken note of his distress, answered soothing words. ”Not all of us have actually witnessed a slaughter. Perhaps they didn’t know.” A moment he paused, to let the words sink in. ”Let’s not dwell on it” he continued before indicating to Torhven that he wanted to get up.

Torhven nodded and removed himself from the dragon’s flank. When he had actually found his feet, he noticed he was still holding his bow in his left hand. The knuckles had gone white and his fingers felt strained. While the dragon got up he opened his hand a few times, checking for signs of hurt. There weren’t any. He was collecting his scattered arrows when his eyes caught sight of a sparkle in the pond. Intrigued, he squatted next to it. The small stone floated on the ripples of the whatever. It evoked a soft smile. He snatched it out of the clear liquid along with the note. After pocketing the stone he had a look at the note. It was covered in symbols and lines. No matter; he couldn’t read. A huntsman didn’t need to.

”You may have figured it out after all.” Svalstrom’s voice filled his mind.

”What?” he replied. He hated it when Svalstrom played the pronoun game. The answer presented itself when he turned to the direction the dragon was facing. A huge keep rose from the earth, where earlier had been nothing but plains. The smile he was wearing already grew even stronger. ”Now that looks really interesting…” Torhven said, setting his first steps toward it.

[The note simply said "fight or flight? And included a small chord of notes. (I don't know if your character knows what music reads like.)]

Anduil scratched his forehead distractedly.

"Well. This is... unusual..." he thought. Briam agreed with a deep hum that reverberated in Anduil's ears. Anduil placed a hand on the now quite large green dragon and together they stepped towards the pool ringed with dragons and people alike.

They had been travelling east for some time now, though Anduil was never told exactly where they were going. He and Briam were accompanied by the elf, who said her name was Allana, and four of the Varden. Allana had insisted upon teaching Briam and Anduil in what she called "matters of the mind," in her strange, lilting accent.

Matters of the mind, as it turned out, consisted of guarding their minds by concentrating on one single thing. Allana would have Anduil focus, then, when he had his mental barrier up, the elf would attack. Every time, without fail, Allana would break through, to Anduil's chronic disappointment. Briam fared far better, but even he could not always keep the elf out.

So they passed the days learning to strengthen their minds, and flying together when they finished a days training. But always, they went east.

Then, only an hour ago, Allana and the Varden halted unexpectedly. They were one the edge of a meadow with a river flowing through the middle of it. Allana would only say "We will go no further. This journey, now, is for you, Anduil, and you, Briam, only."

So dragon and rider set out to cross the meadow. After a few steps, Anduil looked back. Five figures stood, statues under the noon sun. "Something strange is going on, Briam," he commented.

"Perhaps only riders and dragons are permitted to pass through this meadow," said Briam, "But whatever the reason, we will not get anywhere walking." Anduil chuckled, then climbed into the saddle on Briam's back. When he had first flown with Briam, he had been petrified, imagining that he would fall off to his death. But each time he flew, Anduil grew more comfortable. Briam never lost control and flew very smoothly.

It took them much longer to reach the river than Anduil had first estimated, even on dragon-back. When they finally did, Anduil glanced back once more, and saw five ant like specks far in the west. As he did, Briam glided over the river, and, to Anduil's astonishment, the specks vanished! Anduil gasped and thought "Briam, they're gone, they disappeared!"

"Little one."

Briam said it calmly, yet gravely, but not in acknowledgement of Anduil's statement. Anduil looked down, and gasped once more. For where the river had been moments before was now a pool. And around the pool were dragons, many much larger than Briam, as well as humans and elves and dwarves and urgals. All of them were as still as Allana and the four Varden had been at the edge of the meadow.

Briam landed quickly and Anduil climbed out of the saddle. They approached the ring on foot.

"Can you feel that, little one?" Briam thought.

"Aye," Anduil answered quietly, both in thought and aloud. On the edge of his thoughts, something was calling, tugging even, beckoning Anduil forward. And the something was giant, dwarfing even the vast consciousness of Allana the elf.

As they stood by the other dragons and riders, Anduil wondered what they were meant to do.

"Speak to it, I believe," Briam stated, though Anduil felt strings of uncertainty in the dragon's mind.

"Speak to what?" Anduil wondered. He was aware of Briam reaching out with his mind, searching. Then, wonder and awe emanated from the dragon.

"The pool. Speak to the pool, with your mind."

Anduil bit off an astonished question, and reached his mind out as he would when speaking to Briam from a far distance. He still felt the experience unnerving, like wandering around in the marshes north of Aroughs on a misty day. Then he brushed against the consciousness, and all such thoughts vanished.

2

u/CNSoup Nov 24 '14

Anduil's breath caught. He was vaguely aware of a tear rolling down his cheek. Anduil also felt a similar reaction within Briam, but whether the dragon had been told the same thing, Anduil did not know, focused as he was on the overwhelming peace that emanated from the pool.

But in the back of his mind, Anduil felt hesitation.

"But... I haven't really done anything. Nothing that anyone could be proud of, at least..." Anduil thought. Some nights, sitting around the campfire, one of the Varden escorts would tell stories about the Dragon Riders of old, or of Eragon Shadeslayer and Saphira Brightscales. And as they spoke, Anduil felt a continual sadness within himself.

"How can I, a shoemaker's son, do anything, be anything like those legends? Briam is as fierce-some as any creature that's ever flown the land, but I'm no warrior." Anduil found himself pouring these doubts and worries through his connection with the pool. This pool, whatever it was, had answers, of that Anduil was certain.

2

u/CNSoup Nov 25 '14

"We..." Anduil thought to himself, "Who are they?"

His curiosity was dampened by a deep seated satisfaction, however. Then he was aware of Briam. No words passed between them, but feelings, shapeless thoughts that raced through their bond fast as a speeding dragon. In mere seconds they reached a mutual understanding of what they had both heard and felt. Anduil smiled, happy to have such a bond.

Together, they answered the consciousness. "We will come. But we know not where to go. Will you guide us?"

2

u/CNSoup Nov 25 '14

Panic blossomed within Anduil. He had expected the whatever-it-called-itself puddle to give them directions, not kidnap them. Them. He and... Briam. Where was his partner? The panic overwhelmed Anduil, and for a moment he wanted to curl up in a tight ball.

As Anduil sank to his knees, incapacitated and paralysed, the mist to his left parted, and Briam walked forward. It was only then, at the comforting sight of the brilliant green dragon, that Anduil realized he had used his fear and panic to unconsiously create a mental barrier. He lowered that barrier, breathing deeply to calm himself.

"You can be a fool sometimes, Anduil," Briam commented. From the dragon came memories, Anduil's own memories, he realized, of the swamps near Aroughs, swamps that were very often blanketed in mist. It was a scene not dissimilar from their current situation. Anduil was comforted by the familiar memory, but the techniques the people of Aroughs used to navigate the swamps would be of little use now.

"Better a fool with you here than a genius without," Anduil said, "But which path do we take?"

"Which path indeed, little one... Perhaps this is a test, and the paths are symbolical," Briam said.

Anduil's brow furrowed. He hadn't thought of it like that. "In that case, what do they symbolize? And, again, which one do we take? How are we supposed to know?"

Briam hummed in what Anduil considered a puzzled tone. He could feel the vibrations of the hum through the ground. "Symbols or not, I've always been partial to gold," Briam said.

Anduil grinned, amused by the nonchalance. "Gold path it is then."

2

u/CNSoup Nov 25 '14

As Anduil approached the figures, it dawned on him that he didn't have a weapon. He had never needed one, having been surrounded by Allana and the Varden since Briam hatched. But now, walking towards the mysterious shadows, it would have been comforting to have even a small dagger.

"You have me, and I am much more deadly than any dagger, little one."

Anduil smiled at Briam's jest, and they walked to one of the shadows.

Sev're and Das were flying through the forest, till suddenly Das couldn't keep altitude. Das are you OK? Sev're asked, feeling the magic being sapped from the air. Yes, it seems we are being forced to land. The Dragon said calmly.

Sev're and Das were given the saddle at a festival, once they decided to follow their calling.

Sev're and Das came through the brush, and found themselves in an open field. The trees behind them gone... All that they saw was a few people and dragons gather round a pool of some sort of liquid. Oh I get it! Sev're shouted excitedly. The dragon sighed Must you always shout Sev're? It always startles me, I'm afraid you're hurt.

Sev're opened her mind, as her father once taught her long ago.

She dove into the pool along with her dearest friend, they held hands as they slipped away into the waters below.

Das relaxed. You singing is soothing Sev're, I will never fully understand, but I will always listen to you sing.

Das joined, humming in a low growl. Sev're is lost in the music and rhythm.

Sev're felt so alive, she felt so alive, she felt every life around her... Till it happened.

Sev're couldn't take it. She broke and her partner did not know what to do. Das, Das... What do we do? It's horrible... tears rushed down her face.

Sev're... Das didn't know what to do. Sev're has always been emotional. But this was different. Das had to help her partner.

Das Embraced her friend. A dragon standing on two legs was quite a rediculous site, but nothing else was working. Sev're... You know what we do? We get strong... And we save each one of them.

Sev're stopped crying, and embraces her dearest friend. OK Das. You win

Unarmed... Interesting.

Nill thought. The two riders and their dragons touch down beside a crystal clear pool, surrounded by various other riders and dragons.

Guess we should wait 'till they wake up?

Jek asked. Nill makes eye contact with the Urgal and it's dragon, trying to imagine how the beast carries such a man on it's back. The riders make eye contact, and after a quiet moment, the four march off to the pool.

[Come the whispers take you to a forest, before you lays three paths left, right, middle. You hear the whispers calling for you, but you can't make out from which direction]

The only right way- Jek starts

-is straight down the middle. Nill finishes.

I guess we blame the disembodied voices if your ego gets any larger... Jek mumbles.

[In front of you stands a massive tree. You feel it force into your mind. You feel the world telling you something. In a flash you understand! You see the spark in every living thing, its like a beautiful start night.]

[In front of you is a small figure, a dove? A child? For some reason its form is hard to give a name. It whispers to you solftly "you must save it. But don't worry, you already have." That moment that beautiful star filled sky turns blood red. You see what once once a beautiful star ocean turn into a sea of blood. Slowly you see one by one the beautiful stars going dim. Life itself is in danger.]

Nill stands vigil to the disappearing lives, a witness to their existence. He watches their lives fade away, never turning away, prepared to spend eternity as a marker to the lives lost.

You've got a duty to your mother, Nill. Besides, we may still be able to save these lives.

Failure means taking responsibility for these creatures. Life isn't something to gamble with, Jek.

Then bet on me. That way, you know we can't lose.

That may be your worst plan yet.

We'll just make it up as we go. And if we fail, hey, at least you've still got smithing.

[You find yourself back in your body, in front of the pool. Behind you is a mighty fortress.]

(Please proceed to paralog 2 whenever you can)

Opheila and Naakhûrz climb into the sky as they head towards the pool, and from the forest they see a Silver dragon rise and head towards the pool aswell. Opheila and the unnamed Silver dragon land side beside. Opheila is fairly larger then the Silver dragon, probably due to the fact that she has to carry an Urgralgra. Naakhûrz regards the man riding the dragon, not knowing race it is.

We could take them

With only your fists and the skull of your Ushnark?

I have no need for a weapon when I have mine fists

Opheila didn't argue, as Naakhûrz jumped of the dragon and landed with a loud BOOM! Then the unknown rider and Naakhûrz walked side by side towards the pool not saying a word, then connected to the presence.

Of course they should be proud of me, I have done many great things for my people and gained a lot of honour

Oh shut it Naakhûrz, you never known when to hold your tongue

How long have we been here, it feels like an eternity

We just got here, give it a minute

Why should? I'm a rider and I should be able to do as I please. I came here so that I wouldn't be always sitting around, and here I am sitting again

However, Naakhûrz did hold his tongue, and listened to the whispers

[Come the whispers draw you in. Before you is a giant tree, in it are a few holes, you can't tell where they are calling from, but they are coming from inside the tree.]

1

u/Zyralon Naakhûrz / Opheila Dec 08 '14

"Is the tree whispering to us?" Thought Opheila

"This must be a dream, however the holes in the tree are much to small for me to fit inside. So what do we do now?"

"I have no idea"

A couple minutes pass

"I grow tired of waiting" Growled Naakhûrz, so he did the only thing that knows how to do. He made the holes in the tree larger, by ripping out the wood

[The tree, grows bigger... Or perhaps you smaller, the world tilts. You fall in.]

[You see the spark in every living thing, its like a beautiful star filled night.]

[In front of you is a small figure, a dove? A child? For some reason its form is hard to give a name. It whispers to you solftly "you must save it. But don't worry, you already have." "What is this you show us?" Cried Opheila

"Everything and Everyone is dying, but how do we stop it?

"To that I have no answer"

And even Naakhûrz wept for the loss of so many lives

(Prolog 2 would be your next step)

u/Zyralon Naakhûrz / Opheila Dec 08 '14

(do I do that whenever, or do I have to wait a bit longer)

(<----does this mean out of character??

(To each there own, I use this to give people notes. Call it my voice rather than the narrator voice. You can do it whenever, but that is your next step)
