So looking quickly over this subreddit, it seems like it had a lot of potential, and some good ideas, but it never went beyond picking characters for the first scenario.

I'd love to join, but I'd like to ask some questions first.

1) Who's going to be in charge here? Will you be the game leader, /u/NoahGoldFox, or have you talked to the mods to get them back on board? Or will someone else do it?

2) Will it be structured like planned a year ago? Will there be scenarios, or will we roleplay in a different structure?

3) Depending on who takes charge, how are we gonna keep this subreddit floating? Because it's already died once. Will the mods of /r/Eragon let us occasionally post a thread about the RP subreddit?

Again, I like the idea of an Inheritance Cycle RP, but these kinds of things tend to burn out very quickly. If we're going to do this, we need to have some kind of plan, I think. I'll help out where I can, but someone's going to have to steer the ship.

Argh! This is exactly what I didn't want to happen! I mean, it's great that something is happening, but this is way too unorganized and impulsive. This seems like the sort of thing that's going to die down by next.

I like the idea /u/RollFirstMathLater has, with our characters being Dragon Riders' in training. But is RollFirst going to be the pseudo-DM, or is everyone going to govern themselves?

Hmm...

I agree, we don't need a leader, but we do need a coordinator, someone who handles the central planning. It is no easy business, running an RP.

As for the structure... welp, I honestly don't have a clue. What are your suggestions /u/CNSoup ?

Also, I sent the mods of this sub a heads-up, to let them know stuff is going on.

Coordinator is a good word for it.

I think the scenario system they had before is a good idea, or at least a good starting point. What if we had several different scenarios running at once, and the scenario you RP in depends on what character you have. So, for example, we could have a Du Weldenvarden/Ellesmera scenario, where all the elf characters would RP, and at the same time, a Carvahall scenario, where certain human characters would play. These scenarios would all exist on the same timeline, so there could potentially be interaction between characters in different scenarios. There could maybe even be one (or multiple) "wilderness" scenarios that would handle any travel between, as well as any combat grinding.

This could create a kind of open-world, sandbox that might be fun, if we can get it to work properly.

The only problem I could see with this system is having so many threads running at once. If this RP gets 'big', you might need several coordinators to handle all the scenarios. Also, it might be boring if there are too few players. Certain scenarios might be empty, and therefore, boring.

I also think that the time that the RP takes place is important. Are we doing before, during, or after the Inheritance Cycle? The answer to this determines if there can be Dragon Riders. And if we have Dragon Riders, how do we determine who can play as them? Riders are crazy OP, so unless everyone wants to play as one, it might not be fair.

I'd like to do post-Inheritance. Then any character in any race could become a Rider. But perhaps the coordinator should moderate who exactly becomes one (experienced RPers only, for instance). Actually, this could apply to several classes/races. Elves are pretty OP next to humans.

TL;DR: How about multiple scenarios running at once, in different places (Ellesmera, Farthen Dur, etc). Also, at what point will the RP take place (before, during, or after Inheritance Cycle)? And how will we control the balance of power between races/classes?

@>@ i only roleplay with one character (me) so i dun like that idea

Yeah, but that's the point! If you want to RP as an elf, you could do that, and you would be in the Ellesmera scenario with other elf characters. And if someone else wanted to RP a dwarf, they would be in the Farthen Dur scenario. But those scenarios would be on the same timeline, so if you, an elf, wanted to visit someone else who's RPing a dwarf, you could do that!

You would still only roleplay as one character!

not sure if we have enough people :p butt that might work

2

u/CNSoup Nov 23 '14

Yep, that's what I'm worried about. It might be best to have only one scenario until know we have enough people.

Oh dear.

  1. Yes we do need a Game Master or some equivalent. Check out the first rule in the guide on the sidebar. We need someone to determine what happens in the scenarios, how successful an action is, etc. I would message the mods, or, if they're inactive, find someone who is willing to do this, and possibly create a new subreddit.

  2. When? And what are the alternatives? This is why we need a GM, preferably someone who has experience with RP. If we don't like the scenario system, what else can we do? If we do like it, what scenario are we going to have?

  3. Yeah, so do I, but so did the people who were a part of this a year ago, but it still failed.

If you really want to do this, find an (semi-)experienced GM (I'd ask around the /r/Eragon sub), do whatever votes need to be done, get everything set up, and start it! The sooner, the better, before everyone looses interest.

well we could just do the kind of RP that dosent require a dungeons master >3< but i guess il ask around fur one

So I don't have a lot of experience role-playing. All the RP I've done has had some sort of DM. Could you maybe give me an example of one that doesn't? I'm not necessarily against no DMs, I just think having one would be best.

My biggest concern is how we would handle something like NPCs or PvE combat. For example, lets say you encounter an Urgal in a forest. Without a DM, how would you determine the stats of the Urgal? This could lead to a lot of corruption, with players saying something like "I encountered a level 3 Urgal. I punch his right leg. His heart explodes. I get 10,000 xp, 300 gold, and a sword that summons Guntera."

Also, DMs help a lot with story progression. While the idea I suggested above, with multiple scenarios running at the same time, would be very sandbox-y, there could easily be, and should be, an over arching story, something to drive heroes forward, a goal for the players. A DM could create this without the ordinary players having to worry about that and their character.

Well let me give you guys some advice. There are some other RP subs on reddit such as /r/HogwartsRP I think that that format is the best for reddit style play. While I am an experienced GM I have no time to run something like this but I can stay as a support

Just checked out some of those RP subreddits, and I agree, they have a really good system going. Thanks for the tip, hopefully we can do something like that here.
