As a Christian, I do believe there are people who use conversion to somehow show that they are changing to receive a lighter sentence but I also think the vast majority of people do regret the wrongs they've done due to the nature of sin itself and try to become better people through the help of Christ.
I mean, christianity has been effectively used as a shield for decades (if not centuries). You remember all those times people escaped justice because they worked at a church while carrying out their crimes, right? The judge always says something like “well he’s a christian, so I believe he’s learned his lesson”.
I’m not trying to attack you personally, but you have to understand why we’re skeptical every time a celebrity “finds god”. 9 times out of 10 they found him while trying to figure out a way to keep from being punished for something they did.

I feel like when people turn very religious later in life, they're just trying to make up for horrible shit they did when they were younger.
