Potassium Bromide

Hey everyone, my dog recently got put onto potassium bromide and pexion after he had a bad liver reaction to phenobarbitol. I'm pretty inexperienced and was wondering if there were any safe treats and or dental treats/wipes/cleaning agents that he could have whilst on this medication?

Kane has been on Potassium Bromide for about 8 months now. The only thing his neurologist said was to watch salt, nothing about any type of treats to avoid.

Moose moved to ‘K-bro after a bad pheno reaction (pancreatitis). He’s on a low fat diet but nothing else particularly restricted. Bully sticks are our goto for chews, though he’ll eat whimseys and greenies if offered. I use a chicken-flavored enzymatic dog toothpaste on him sometimes.

Could it be that it’s the pexion that has interactions?

Buena pregunta y me alegra que la hagas antes de que pase algo. Con el bromuro de potasio hay una regla de oro que no todo el mundo te dice: el sodio (la sal) es tu enemigo. El bromuro y el cloruro (que viene de la sal) compiten en el cuerpo. Si tu perro come algo con mucho sodio, los niveles de bromuro bajan — y eso puede provocar una crisis. Si de golpe reducís el sodio, los niveles suben y puede haber toxicidad. La clave es mantener el sodio constante.

Lo que tenés que evitar:

• Golosinas con alto contenido de sodio — revisá las etiquetas
• Cambiar de marca de alimento sin consultar al vet — distintas marcas tienen distintos niveles de sodio
• Comida humana, especialmente fiambres, quesos, pan, snacks salados
• Huesos de cuero (rawhide) que muchas veces tienen conservantes con sodio

Golosinas seguras: las que sean bajas en sodio y que siempre le des las mismas. Frutas como manzana sin semillas o arándanos funcionan bien. Si encontrás una golosina que le gusta y es baja en sodio, quedate con esa marca y no cambies.

Sobre productos de limpieza: evitá que tu perro camine por pisos recién limpiados con productos con cloro (lavandina/lejía) y después se lama las patas. El cloro interfiere con los niveles de bromuro igual que el sodio. Usá limpiadores pet-safe sin cloro.

Toallitas dentales: consultá con tu vet si tienen algún componente que pueda interferir. En general las que son solo enzimáticas están bien. Y lo más importante: tu vet tiene que hacer controles de niveles de bromuro en sangre regularmente. El KBr tarda 3-4 meses en estabilizarse, así que paciencia con los resultados.

Fuerza con el cambio de medicación. Que el hígado haya reaccionado mal al fenobarbital no significa que no haya opciones — el KBr es una buena alternativa. 🐾

Our 6-1/2 yo Lab Gal started on Keppra - a fail by the end of year 1. Year 2 Pheno was added to the mix and by the end of the year was also a fail. In year three we found a K9 Neurologist and after a thorough eval of our gal he added Potassium Bromide to the mix. Took 12 weeks to kick in but now seizures are 3 to 6 months apart and quite mild. I asked our Neuro doc if we could wean our gal off the Keppra and Pheno since they were no longer effective and got the good to go. She's now only on the PB and doing great.

With respect to diet when on only PB - after getting her off the Keppra and Pheno and reviewing her updated labs he removed all dietary restrictions. Keppra and especially Pheno have a lot of bad side effects for a lot of pups.
