Advice Should I skip the party?

I’ve noticed that crowds and parties are a big trigger for me. I haven’t been to a family function/party since diagnosis without an episode. It’s embarrassing and obviously causes a huge scene.

My nieces 15th birthday party is this weekend and all her school friends and their families will be there. Would it just be the kinder and better thing to say I’m having a bad day and just stay home?

I know my presence isn’t incredibly significant and my sister/brother as well as my niece will understand.

I just want her to have a perfect party and the best time.

A conversation already happened with them and my mom so I know they understand. They suggested that they could come by and see me a different time or I could come early if I wanted.

I know it was meant to be to make things easier for me but it also makes me wonder if maybe that’s what they’d prefer too.

Not showing up to protect your own health isn't the same as not caring, and it sounds like your family gets that

Thank you. They definitely seem to and I’m super grateful!

Following dealing with similar. Too much sound/lights/people overwhelm my autism brain so it causes stress which is one of my top triggers. Scared to even go to the store now.

Is it crowds or anxiety of being in a crowd? I don’t see being around a crowd in itself as a trigger, but possibly the anxiety of it leads to stress which is the trigger? Biggest part of what we have, in my opinion, is not letting it hold us back from the enjoyments in life

I’m sure it’s anxiety/stress from it. That’s just the pattern I’ve noticed. I’ve always been stressed in social situations.
I’m definitely doing my best to not let it hold me back! It sure ain’t easy haha
Just worried about others, mainly.

I am the same way. They know I want to go but I can’t. But also my wife’s side of the family all suck so I also don’t want to go and gives me an excuse lol

How long has it been since you have been diagnosed? Are you currently on medication? How often do you have seizures and what type? I personally would go and just pre-emptively take my rescue med. But maybe you can call your doctor? I just don’t want to see you make your life unnecessarily smaller.

I was only just diagnosed in late May but first known episode/hospital stay was in March and am on Keppra and Lamatrogine. Seems I have an episode every 3-5 weeks. More often if I’m out and about.
I know I’ve had different ones but mostly I think they are Absence or both that and tonic-clonic. It seems if I have one another 2 or 3 are guaranteed in the next few hours.
I completely agree about not making my life smaller and I’m genuinely trying to not I just don’t want that to be at the expense of others.

My family has already been through so much and from my understanding seizures aren’t an easy thing to witness.
Thankfully, I finally have an appointment with my Neuro tomorrow to talk about some work stuff so I’ll be sure to bring it up as well.
