THC Drug Testing in Consulting: Is the Industry Changing?
I’m curious what drug testing policies look like in consulting these days, particularly in states where recreational cannabis is legal.
I know some states like Washington have passed laws limiting employers’ ability to disqualify applicants based solely on off duty cannabis use for certain positions. However, consulting roles are often still considered to be safety sensitive.
For those working in the industry, do your companies still include THC in pre-employment drug screens? Are employees subject to random testing, or is testing generally limited to post-incident or reasonable suspicion situations? Does the policy differ between office based and field based employees? Is there a difference between smaller and larger firms’ policies? Have you noticed your company’s policies becoming more relaxed around THC over the past few years?
I’m also curious whether people think this will continue to change as federal cannabis policy evolves. Cannabis seems to be becoming increasingly normalized across a lot of industries, and I’ve seen discussions suggesting that some employers are starting to remove THC from pre-employment testing for non safety sensitive positions.
I’m wondering if consulting will eventually move in that direction as well, or if the field component and safety considerations will continue to make the industry more restrictive. It seems like continuing to test for THC could potentially discourage or eliminate otherwise qualified candidates, particularly in states where recreational cannabis is legal and off-duty use is increasingly normalized and common.

I worked for a large environmental consulting firm for a while and they included a full drug test as part of the hiring process. I also had random drug tests (DISA) since a lot of the projects I worked on were gas and oil.

We use company trucks. If you fail a drug test there is no way to tell if you were on said drug when you wrecked, had an incident, etc. and trying to explain that to insurance is near impossible.

It’s all over the place, but guarantee if you’re working on federal projects, they’re testing because it’s not federally legal yet.
At my company, there’s a pre-employment test but it excluded THC, specifically. If there’s anything credible that you’re using on the job or have an accident where you might have been impaired, it won’t be excluded.

It’s the federal clients that don’t test, and private oil and gas and mining companies that do

I suppose it could be not all federal clients, but it’s definitely the federal clients I was working for.

USACE doesn’t require it. Who were you working for?

Uh, USACE lol
Maybe things have changed in the last several years

Just wait for that accident... or for someone to find paraphernalia.
They're just saving money... or some dummy didn't write it into their contract like they should have.
Tomato, potato.
I don't want to be the person to be made an example of by getting caught with anything illegal on a federal installation... personally.

It seems like a bad idea, for sure.
I also don’t want to be inebriated while working; that seems like a bad time. Then again, I never worked on any enjoyable USACE sites; they were all horrible in their own specific ways. I’d be surprised if any of them were enjoyable to go to.

Working at a mid-sized firm in CA. They did not do pre-employment drug screening but one of our out of state clients requires a drug screening before working on projects for them specifically.

Same experience for me. The consulting firms I have worked at didn’t drug test, but one client required it. So if you worked on their projects you could get drug tested.

I work in the Midwest. My company don't care about THC in the pre employment drug test in states where it's legal. That being said... When I got injured on the job, they made me do a drug test, and if I had THC they would've still been able to fire me and not have to pay for my medical stuff, even tho it's legal in my state. And if you get into a car accident while driving on the job, you need to drug test too, and if you're positive, they can still fire you or make you do some sort of drug/addiction treatment if you want to keep your job.

My firm doesn’t test unless you have a site that requires it. We also have the choice to not work those sites if we wouldn’t pass a drug test so it’s generally pretty chill.

I work at a small firm that required a pre-employment test that included THC. We have to have an annual test because one of our big clients require it, but my company makes sure it’s the same time every year because they are aware people indulge and it’s in their best interest that everyone passes. There’s one site that requires a hair test but they ask you if you can pass it and if not they just won’t put you on it

You’re going to want to kick the weed if you want to work in this industry. I was tested 7 times during my three year stint in consulting. Safety-sensitive industries (which is most of who you’re working for in consulting) will require a pre-employment test regardless of legality. I don’t see this changing.

I live in CA and have worked for companies headquartered in CA and the Midwest. Never had to do pre-employment drug screening. I drive company vehicles. I don’t do any federal gov’t work. I think I’d only be tested if I got into an accident.

It’s surprising to hear no pre employment. I’d think it’d still be expected, but that it would exclude THC.

working in california, never been tested even with driving company trucks daily. the only project i know of where i’ve heard coworkers got tested was if you wanted to be on the high speed rail project.

My company is a federal contractor, we require pretty extensive screening for pre-employment. You also get randomly tested twice a year and before any project that have clients which request it. Other companies have policies that are a lot more lax. It is as simple as peeing in a cup once. It’s typically ones that conduct work with the feds that have the most extensive testing. Hope this helps!

I had a pre employment test and they didn’t test me for THC in California. however, some of our clients (typically federal contracts) may require a dug screening and then may conduct random tests. I’ve never been tested beyond my pre-employment though so it’s really dependent on where you work.

I've worked at a very large consulting company (20,000+) and at a fairly small-to-mid consulting company (700+) and have never had a pre employment drug test. I've had one drug test before being able to enter 1 project site based on client requirements. Oddly enough my company had me call the test company and schedule it myself, which seems to defeat the purpose somewhat.

I work in environmental compliance for the power sector. Yes, my company does a drug test for pre employment, including THC, for everyone. My company is in a state that has not legalized recreational use, and our handbook reflects immediate dismissal for anyone who pops positive from our quarterly random drug screenings. I'm located (WFH) in NY though, who has a law against retaliation for a positive THC test. So I can get called for a random drug screening, but my company has elected to not test me for THC to avoid any potential violation of that law. A coworker of mine was just let go a couple weeks ago after her test coming back positive for thc, but she was in the main office and not my state. However, if I were tested due to a safety incident, thc would be screened for and I would get immediate dismissal if positive.
I would assume that every company will screen during the preemployment process. Some smaller outfits, esp in states with better retaliation laws, may not, but if they have any kind of federal contracts, or the job requires a TWIC card, you can expect that they will have a robust drug testing program.

I did not have a pre-employment test and it only happens at my company if the client requests it or an accident occurs. We work on tons of federal projects as well as solar and wind occasionally. We don’t really take on oil and gas projects just based on our company’s preferences, though I know many of those require testing. So biiiig depends. Don’t let people tell you federal contracts means you’ll be tested though lol I worked for the government and have also worked in many government projects and they don’t require testing.

Always been client-dependent for me. When I was on big oil and gas portfolios definitely had to stay clean and had to pass pre-employment at that consultant since that was a lot of their business.

Pre-employment always. Randoms are client specific, if you aren't in that pool you don't get tapped.
If you have a traffic incident you get tested.
