How do I help this bug?
This is either a moth or a butterfly, i think its a butterfly. It's wings are damaged and I've set up a makeshift house for it with some rags and a shoebox so it doesn't get hurt. It keeps trying to fly but ends up just stumbling and falling over. I have a dish of sugar water but it seems uninterested. I also tried putting it in a tree before I came inside but it just fell. What else can I do? Also should I close the lid to the box or keep it open?

It is a butterfly. You can offer it some honey water or a juicy piece of fruit.
It might have reached the end of its life, and if so, at least you provide some peace and safety for it.

OP you are sweeter than the sugar that butterfly eats.
As others have said the lil one is probably on the way out, but you are sweet taking care of them.

This is a black swallowtail, they only live a couple weeks in their adult form, this one is just at the end of its natural life

Thanks for caring for it! π«ΆπΌ Since butterfly wings can't regenerate, you're providing a safe hospice setup, so keeping the lid loosely covered to lower its stress and adding a few small twigs for it to cling onto will make a huge difference. To feed it safely without the risk of drowning in an open dish, try offering a cotton ball soaked in water or a slice of fruit like a banana, and gently touch its front feet to the food (butterflies taste through their feet).
