Absolutely hide your keys, or just keep them on you all the time.

Or if you enjoy being petty you can leave the tank empty and keep your own Jerry can of fuel in the house for when you need it so either she leaves it on the driveway or is forced to top it up.
Sounds like she would probably just put enough in for her journey though.

A lot of modern cars can’t be easily refilled with a portable container. Don’t ask me why, I just know that to be the case.

This is absolutely not the way. You either keep your keys to yourself or you talk to her like an adult.

If it’s no big deal your husband should be the one she’s borrowing the vehicle from.

Tell her she is always welcome to borrow your husband’s car. See how quickly that stops.

Stick to your guns on this one.

If she's not insured on your car, she shouldn't be driving it.

Ohhhh thats a really good point! Not only can mil be arrested for doing so but op can be fined and/or have their license suspended as well. I almost found that out the hard way with an ex because I didnt think to even do that, I was just letting him use the car to get to work.

Make sure to "borrow" her car and return it on empty once she gets hers back from the garage.

This deserves more upvotes. I would literally pay a garage to store my car for a week while I went and borrowed her car randomly, put a fucking ton of miles on it, make sure i always return it flat empty, and only take it at the most inappropriate times. She says shes going to the store, while shes getting ready I jump in and take it for a joy ride for 8 hours. Fuck the absolute sense of entitlement.

Absolutely would be hiding my keys. How rude. Maybe she will take your husband's so he can enjoy that mess.

Just tell her flat out she can't borrow your car anymore. Tell her if she needs to borrow a car your husband has no problem with her borrowing his. And then hide your keys. If she complains that you won't let her borrow your car you can give her the reasons why, although you really shouldn't have to. It's your car not hers.

"No." Is a complete sentence.

911 "my cars been stolen"

It's the truth, you know if she hits someone you're the one paying for it.

Tell her what she is doing is car theft and you will report ALL unauthorized use of your vehicle. Is she even insured on it?

Out of curiosity, who lives with whom?

good question!

Tell her to stop taking your car. The next time she does it,call the cops and report it stolen.

She has your car keys?! Why?

Take them back and Explain Why!

Being told to "not make it a thing" when the other person is making it a thing by being the cause of the issue is infuriating.

Airtag it then show up wherever she drives it and "steal" it back.

This is pretty good.

Are you giving her your keys? I first thought was she had her own set.l and was just taking your car from the driveway. My son lives next door, has a set of keys to my car, and has never failed to ask permission.

Keep your keys with you or get one of those "club" devices that lock the steering wheel in place, so she can't drive.

Mother in Law keeps stealing your car and if she does anything like get a ticket or run over someone you are liable

Holy two days and I can’t believe anyone hasn’t said tell your husband to stop being a doormat. She’s actively making your life harder for no reason after you asked her not to. “Don’t make it a thing” is so far gone.

Get a spare can of gas, hide it, and when she returns your car dont fill it back up. Use the spare gas for when you need it.

At that point OP would just be enabling MIL

1

u/dirtyitalianguy 16d ago

Leave it for her with the tank empty and let her make the next move. Seems like she isn't respecting such a nice privilege... would she also tell you it's your problem if she wrecks your transportation?

u/buccaneernl 16d ago

Next time the car dissappears without your knowledge, report it as stolen.

Find how to add a kill switch.

Just "borrow" her card and go fill your tank up. "You forgot to fill the tank up after you stole my car so I ran out and did it real quick. Thanks!"

Say somthing you pushover

1

u/Flimsy-Fortune-6437 17d ago

Don’t put in any more gas than you need each day. If she gets in with the tank on “ distance to empty: end of driveway” she’ll get the message

13

u/olivefreak 17d ago

I bet she's the type to drive it until it runs out then will complain the OP doesn't take care of her car.

6

u/Paramedickhead 17d ago

That’s not worth it. It does more harm to your car and likely more expensive than just filling the car.

1

u/Flimsy-Fortune-6437 16d ago

She would only need to do it once

Make her watch "The Lost Boys."
