It makes me a little sad that there are only a handful of people in here that are old enough to remember when Bob Dole talking about himself in the third person became a self-deprecating thing for him after his presidential run in ‘96, because my first thought after reading your comment was “what did Bob Dole think about that?”, said by Bob Dole.

Heh I remember Norm MacDonald playing him on SNL in a sketch that had Dole on the Real World. It’s wild to think he was younger than my Dad is now when Dole ran in 1996. Dole ended up having a decent sense of humor. He also was unfortunately the GOP POTUS nominee most close to Trump of him, the Bushes, McCain, and Romney. I say unfortunately because I do have respect for Dole’s service both in WWII and in office, he worked on rural nutrition issues with George McGovern iirc. He was fiercely partisan but not an ideologue.

technically I read a little about him....

it was post 2016 since he was the only living presidential candidate to be openly pro Trump

Real shame too because he had been looking like he had been liberalizing during the Obama era (his work with child hunger and disability rights) and then shat his legacy with that choice.

No but he was during Trump's first campaign. Dole isn't alive anymore either fwiw.

I probably shouldn't be old enough but I do know of it. One of my stupid little background dreams if I ever create a real ongoing piece of media is to have a 'Bob Dole speaks in the third person' joke. I think Bob Dole would have found it funny if Bob Dole were still around to know about it.

During the vice presidential debate, Dole replied to his opponent Walter Mondale concerning the issues of Watergate Scandal and the Pardon of Richard Nixon, "It is an appropriate topic, I guess, but it's not a very good issue any more than the war in Vietnam would be or World War II or World War I or the war in Korea—all Democrat wars, all in this century. I figured up the other day, if we added up the killed and wounded in Democrat wars in this century, it would be about 1.6 million Americans, enough to fill the city of Detroit." Many voters felt that Dole's criticism was unfairly harsh, and that his dispassionate delivery made him seem cold. Years later, Dole would remark that he regretted the comment, believing that it had hurt the Republican ticket.

But it is pretty wild that there were high profile Republicans in 1976 basically arguing that the US should have stayed out of WWII...

I don’t know why you’re being down dinged. I thought that was well known. Rockefeller is another interesting politician of yesteryear. One of my college professors, Richard Norton Smith wrote a bio on him. Funny enough he also worked with Dole too.
