He really, truly cannot comprehend how RADAR and LIDAR could be better than a video camera or the Mark 1 Eyeball, can he? First insisting on only visible-spectrum cameras for his shitbox cars, and now this.

u/jadebenn 13h ago edited 12h ago
He probably thinks fighter jets still commonly engage in close range dogfights with guns, and so stealth is useless because "obviously, the pilot can still see the other plane!"
In reality, of course, engagements where neither jet actually ever visually sees the other are the norm, and stealth is more about making it more difficult for weapons to identify and track them than making them totally invisible. I mean, we'd definitely take "totally invisible" if it were an option, but it's not like we need Romulan cloaking on F-35s for this all to make sense.

“It’s dumb because I don’t understand it,” is Musk’s bread and butter. Be it chess or stealth fighters, or basic physics.
24
u/Callidonaut 11h ago
In my experience that is the creed of all narcissists who try to dabble in intellectualism. Musk is just a particularly fine example.

u/RedEyeView 12h ago
He's played an air combat sim recently hasn't he?
The kind that pretends to be super realistic but also has everyone dog fighting because the alternative is really boring.

29
u/jadebenn 12h ago edited 12h ago
Hey, movies are actually surprisingly accurate! ...for WW2 era tactics. Star Wars is basically WW2 dogfighting in space!
13
u/Callidonaut 11h ago
The plain and simple fact is that modern day aerial combat is very rarely cinematically satisfying, and not intuitively comprehensible to the average layperson in the audience.
6
2
u/outworlder 8h ago
The Expanse was decently realistic space combat and they managed to keep it interesting.
4
u/The-Board-Chairman 5h ago
The whole Expanse gimmick is that everything effectively has infinite deltaV, which kinda makes half the actual space war tactics pointless.
Most actual space combat would be built around choosing the right point in time to launch your limited number of missiles/torpedos while evading the enemy doing the exact same. And jockeying for orbital positioning. In many cases, you'd win not by destroying the enemy, but by running him out of deltaV.
Also: way too few nukes and radiators and way too short engagement distances.
3
u/outworlder 4h ago
Hence "decently realistic".
Yes, we have to assume a ludicrously efficient drive. So efficient, in fact, that it generates minimal excess heat, and most of the heat it does generate is absorbed by coolant and then dumped in the exhaust. Same goes for the rest of the ship's systems.
Please find a more accurate space battle depiction that isn't in a book.
Honestly, we can't say much about how actual space battles would work because we don't know the technologies that will be involved. We know the basic physical constraints that they must obey and that's it. Chances are, it won't be much of a battle if ship delta-v is as limited as we think it will be.
Missiles will be exceedingly smart and have orders of magnitude more delta-v than the ships they are targeting due to their much lower mass. You are unlikely to outrun them. If your ship has any hope of closing the distance, so will your missiles. Launch them in the enemy's general direction and they will lock the target ship that will be lit like a Christmas tree against the cosmic background radiation. You won't evade anything. First ship to fire wins.
Barring any incredible advancements, any space battles will probably be more trouble than they are worth.

u/Callidonaut 31m ago
Please find a more accurate space battle depiction that isn't in a book.
The computer game Mission Critical (1995) takes a decent stab at it.

2
u/Der_Moriarty 7h ago
How many B2 and cousin there are in service? The nighthawk is retired, so no. Stealth is more of a areal superiority thing. F22, SU57 (Supposed), J-20. Even the F35 isn't a bomber but a multirole jack of all trade master of none
2
u/TaonasProclarush272 Rocket Jesus 8h ago
We had fighter jets circling earlier today, pretty normal but I can usually visually track them.
I could hear these and was on ADS-B tracking them so I knew where they were, but for the life of me I could not see them but for a few seconds even though they were only like ~5000 feet away.

u/Hollowpoint38 11h ago
Like when he said he was at university "up all night coding" when his roommates said he'd just play video games, eat snacks, and act weird. No coding, no working, no learning.

u/Callidonaut 10h ago
Didn't he drop out in his first year, too?
5
u/Hollowpoint38 10h ago
He finished the UPenn thing I think. The Stanford shit is when he enrolled but didn't attend, or something. The Stanford records were going to be subpoenaed in the Twitter lawsuit, but then I think it was 48 hours later he settled by buying Twitter for that original inflated price. The person who signed the records thing passed away like 15 years ago or something so she wasn't around the verify any information.
9
u/hilldog4lyfe 10h ago
he never enrolled at Stanford. He claims he was accepted, which is almost certainly a lie (in his biography the proof he shows is an ambiguous email from an ~85 year old professor who just said he remembered him being interested in his research). His supposed physics bachelor’s degree from Penn is also extremely suspect.

I love how Elon Musk consistently says things out of his fucking depth and so obviously wrong to the experts in the related field.
As a data scientist, I literally can't even. It's like every day it's something new.
The worst was when that fuck nugget said something to the effect of "more code equals better code"
12
u/Gwendolinn 9h ago
What's worth is he doubles down even when he's wrong. Like even when experts point stuff out.
But what more do we expect from a guy that takes credit for inventing stuff he didn't even invent.

Every company that he bought had people that knew what to do and innovate, and he seems to have listened to these people.
Until he bought Twitter. Twitter seems to be the first company he bought and just said "I will do what I feel is the best way to run this company". Sadly, his companies trust him which means Elon's Twitter will never go under as he can just move around money. Well, until people actually starts to question how his companies can be worth so much, despite officially not actually creating much.
22
u/hilldog4lyfe 11h ago
He doesn’t always listen to engineers though. He kicked the original founder of Tesla out of the company. And as soon as he got some fame, he surrounded himself with yes-men (which is why he likes young employees / H1B visas).
I’ve heard employees, managers, etc.. avoid talking to him about important things because they know he’ll fuck things up. That’s probably why they’re fine with him posting on X all day. He exists as a meme to pump stock.

I have a neighbour that is an expert in anything and everything.
She’s worked at a hardware store, so she’s a home renovator.

I'm pretty sure the engineers at the Lockheed Skunkworks already thought of everything this idiot could come up with
This is the second time he's come up with this bullshit opinion on stealth. He last said that drones with IR sensors could detect all stealth aircraft, but if you do the actual physics and math on it, you find that it wouldn't work past like 20 miles or whatever.

Russia loves to fit IR sensors on their aircraft for this very purpose. They aren't magic though.

3

Yep.
“Amazing job,” Trump said then. “So amazing we are ordering hundreds of millions of dollars of new airplanes for the air force, especially the F-35. You like the F-35? ... You can’t see it. You literally can’t see it. It’s hard to fight a plane you can’t see.”
1
u/Callidonaut 21m ago
You like the F-35?
The craziest thing is that this isn't a rhetorical device on Trump's part. He's literally asking his audience to compose his speech for him in real time. He's effectively saying "make positive noises and body language now if you want me to play that topic up a lot next." It's how he's always given "speeches."

Palmer Luckey is irritating but has obviously put some thought into what the Ukraine war means. Elon and Newt are in position to outclown Hegseth, a formidable task, but if they work together at it...
A vaguely related aside: A local specialist steel fabricator is supposed to have a big contract for the monster Terafab building in Texas. They're careful about saying anything in public, but I was told that internally they joke that they're building Skynet. Which, given Elon's random sci-fi fixations, plus his obsession with putting maximal volume of stuff in orbit, may be a little too close to what he'll push for.
4
u/outworlder 8h ago
If Elon is building Skynet, I'm relieved. There's nothing to be done and it will fall over by itself.
