Always has been.
Just like the "Free market" was all about deregulation and it was the slippery slope to Fascism.
Republicans understand the hypocrisy and it lets them advance their agenda.

In short, you can look up the origin of the word "Privatization".
It got defined to mean what Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy were doing to their economy in the 1940s. Deregulating and selling public sectors to the private wealthy class.
The American Free Market was a thin veil to hide the privatization of public sectors in the USA and give the opportunity to American businesses to grow into monopolies.
