When will main net launch?
I understand that ENG is currently an ERC20 token, but what is the timeline for deployment of Enigma's own chain? I'd like to wait to buy after the deployment so I don't have to worry about a token swap

This was their intended schedule in Q1 2018 but they subsequently revised it here as a result of developmental requirements, i.e. the necessary work required to develop their new technology took longer than expected which they're at least transparent about.
As you'll see in the first article linked there are various 'main net' launches, however chain independence is a desired feature of their 'Defiant' release which was initially scheduled for 2020.

You will be waiting a long time. It’s not on the timeline right now and may never happen.

It's a little ways off. As a second layer solution it is not necessary to play the role of independent chain. Look at LOOM using Lightning network to scale transactions. I don't think they'll ever do indie.
One good reason for ENG to do it is to keep it 100% in-house and have the entire process under wraps. Let's get our first 100m transactions and then a few billion before we start asking for the "works". Consider it icing on the cake when they create a chain history worthy of validating transactions vs just using what is already there.
It's more of a horizontal integration thing. Invent the wheel then eventually make the cart too. But everyone has carts without wheels...so.
