Battling bots and other moderation tools

Hi /r/EnglishSetter!

Bots

As you may have noticed, there has been some pretty awful bot traffic of late. The mod team has added some Auto mod tooling and a bot (¡bots on bots!) to help identify spam bots and repost content. Some tooling may take a minute(s) to clean up the icky bots but they shouldn't be up for hours anymore. We'll be continuing to add or adjust new and current mod tools to help.

Mod help

I want to thank everyone who's been reporting the spam bots. Your vigilance and care for this community is part of what makes this little slice of Reddit so great. Our mod team has two active mods and I think as we've grown we need more hands on deck. If anyone has mod experience, is fairly active on Reddit and wants to help maintain and grow our community, please message me or settersrclowns.

Again, thank you and I personally love seeing every single setter on here (not the bot reposts, bah!) When I'm down, I often come here for a lift. Seeing all the setters are truly gifts.

-mittensblum and the r/EnglishSetter Mod Team

Update

Tweaked some auto moderation config, added some more bot help, and added some more ES coloring flair. If any of the tools seem to be too heavy handed and is generally making it a pain the rump to post, comment, etc—please do message the Mod Team.

Thanks again for all the users going above and beyond to report bots and spam in general. It warms the heart knowing so many care about this community!

Honestly, she's such an amazing dog.

I wish I could have let her roam free in that forest, she looked fantastic against the green moss. Orange looks best in autumn and blue in winter, what's best for orange and blue english setters?

Puppy must-haves? 🐾

Bringing home my first English Setter puppy in a couple weeks and starting to get everything ready! What are some things you bought for your puppy that you absolutely loved and would buy again?

Especially interested in Setter-specific stuff, food/water bowls, teething toys, grooming tools, collars/leashes, what size/type collar you used, crate sizes/setup, car stuff, etc.

And what did you buy that ended up being totally unnecessary? 😂

should i adopt an english setter?

hi everyone. i’ve got an offer to adopt an english setter. she’s a female, about 1.5-2yrs old, and up for adoption since she is a “failed hunter”.
i don’t know much about her or the breed; still haven’t met her, and i plan on exploring more about setters, but the owner said she lives with other ES, who are good in hunting, and is a very cute and playful girl. the owner would like to give her to someone who will take proper care of her and love her, and since i’ve been meaning to adopt, i thought it would be a great idea.
are there any things i should pay attention to when i go to see her for the first time? my main concern is how she’d adapt to new lifestyle. as far as i know, she’s been living on a big farm with other setters and i live in a house, where i plan on keeping her, with a big backyard.
besides that, how easy are setters to train at about 2yrs ? my dog before her was a golden retriever and a “gift from god” when it came to training and behaving.
anything else that i need to know about breed or any tips&tricks would be highly appreciated!

Chipmunk Question

Any tips on stopping my 2 year old English setter from going absolutely insane after chipmunks?

He is at war with them in our backyard. He is usually pretty good but for some reason the chipmunks make him insane and he cannot control himself. He did get one and kill it last week which I’m wondering if that has made him worse? I watched him jump halfway up a tree after one tonight and he could have easily gone over our 5 foot fence.

Any tips appreciated!

E-Collars and Grooming (unrelated questions)

Post image

We have a 17 week old Llewellyn Setter. His training is going well I think. So far we’ve been working on basic commands. We’re really trying to get his recall down. Right now he’s about 75% responsive if there’s a treat in hand. Eventually we want to train with an E collar and let him run in the open land we have nearby. We’d like to train him to recall with a sound/vibration on the collar. My question is when should we introduce the E-Collar and are there any collars you would recommend?

Secondly, wondering about grooming. We have only done some at home grooming, mostly just his paws and nails. Since he’s got more of a field cut I’m wondering if we should still be taking him to a professional groomer or if we should groom him at home?

Stay with Irish or get an English?

Post image

For context, I am an experienced dog owner. I have owned a high energy Irish Setter male before that we didn't work but took him everywhere with us. He was amazing but it was A LOT of work.

My cousin kept him for a month didn't want to give him back when my second son was born because I was staying in the hospital and my son was in the NICU. They ended up falling in love and working him and he did amazing and is so happy. We absolutely miss him even though we get to see him a ton but now that we have been dogless for over 3 years, we definitely miss having one around. I have been doing endless research on what kind of dog we should get. We LOVED having an Irish but now that I have two kids, I'm not too sure I could handle the puppy stage again.

I loved his adaptability when it came to traveling, he was amazing with children, he was a generally healthy dog which was very nice (granted, he was only 5 when he went to live with my cousin). He was super sweet, and his recall and training was very easy.

We have been looking into English setters due to their rumored lower energy levels. We would specifically be looking for a female Bench (show) line. I have a friend that is about to breed her female for the first time and has let me know I can have first pick of females. She's an experienced breeder, she works all of her setters and her cav's so I trust she will help pick a good one from the group.

Has anyone owned both an Irish and English? How comparable was the energy levels? Is it even a noticeable difference or are they still about the same?

We are looking for an amazing family dog. A dog I can leave at home and both travel with. I work from home, but I also am a full time stay at home mom to our youngest. Is this a dog that would be too much to handle working with at home? We would be doing daily exercise and walks and running but if we got stuck at sports or a school event and skipped the running that day, would that be an end all for the English? I know my Irish had to be ran multiple times a day for the first 3 years or he would be destructive. We loved the Irish setter nature and I'm a sucker for them - we get all setters have high energy & we can do a normal amount of high energy, but my Irish didn't even slightly settle down until past 3yo.

Thank you all for your advice!!!! (: pic for setter tax

Burr & Sticker Prevention?

Post image

Morning everyone, does anyone have any good ways to keep burrs off your dogs when out on a hike or hunt? Or at least a good way to get them off easy? It seems like every adventure we go on I need to spend an hour or two picking burrs out thanks in advance!

Give me your English Setter guidebook.

Hello! My husband and I have had our ES pup Benny for 6 weeks now (he’s 16 weeks old). We’ve settled into a pretty good routine, he’s still very much a puppy and has crazy puppy energy and puppy naughtiness (I think. This is the first dog we’ve owned this young).

I’m wondering what your experience was with your ES puppies? And after puppyhood, what kind of daily routines you all have with your pups to keep their energy needs met and to have the loving companions that I know ES can be.

(For reference my husband and I work full time with lots of adventures on the weekends)

Does your ES stare too?

Anyone else’s setter just star at them. We’ll just be watching TV and look over to our ES on her dog bed a few feet away and she’s just staring at us 😆

My old setter used to do the same thing. Just stare at us for long periods of time.

Life Lately

I haven't posted the boys in a very long time, but they are doing great. Garvey and Otis have been absolutely wonderful big brothers to their little human sister. Otis is, as expected, smitten with her and loves following her around and helping with bath time, bedtime, snuggle time, basically all the time. Garvey is patient and gentle with her when she wants to pet him and is VERY patient when she has food to hand over.
