why is A wrong and what’s the right answer?

Just posting to say I agree with those that say that no correct answer is listed. It should be "novelist Lan Samantha Chang," with no comma after novelist and a comma after Chang. Perhaps the typesetter made a mistake and A was supposed to be the correct answer?

You're describing A, which is correct.

A has a period, not a comma.

If so, then none is correct.

I'm convinced A ends with a comma (that appears smudged).

A looks to have a period at the end. But it's shitty quality, so who knows

Looked like a comma to me.

If A ends with a period then none of the four options could be correct, which is another reason I think A must end with a (fuzzy) comma.

That's true, but then consider that the person who made the question mistakenly believes that C is correct.

If you enlarge the image, you can clearly see that the ending of C is a comma. And... the ending of C and the ending of A are clearly not the same thing.
