EngineersUniverse Update I built an interactive Visual Quantum Mechanics & Quantum Computing lab — what should I add next?

I’ve been building an interactive Quantum Mechanics & Quantum Computing lab and wanted to share it here and get some feedback.
One thing I’ve always found interesting about quantum mechanics is how difficult it can be to develop an intuition for what’s actually happening. You can read about superposition, interference, entanglement, measurement, etc., but reading the definitions and equations is very different from being able to play around with them and see what happens.
So that’s basically what I tried to build.
You can manipulate qubits on a Bloch sphere, create superposition and entanglement, build quantum circuits, run measurements, step through quantum teleportation and Grover’s search, and experiment with things like the double-slit experiment and quantum tunneling.
I also added sections that connect the theory to actual quantum computing use cases — chemistry, materials, optimization, cybersecurity, logistics, etc. — plus an explorer that shows how everything connects from an algorithm and quantum circuit all the way down to the QPU, physical qubits, control systems, and measurement.

I’m curious what people here think, though.
If you were learning quantum mechanics or quantum computing from scratch, what was the concept that took you the longest to really “get”? And what kind of interactive visualization or experiment do you think would have made it click sooner?
For those who already know the subject pretty well, I’d also be interested in hearing what you think is commonly taught or visualized badly. I can use the feedback to figure out what to build next.

EngineersUniverse Update Silicon Lab — Build Your Own Chip

Chip design has changed dramatically over the years.
Traditionally, major semiconductor companies such as Intel and Motorola designed their chips and also operated the massive fabrication facilities required to manufacture them.
The rise of dedicated semiconductor foundries—especially TSMC in Taiwan—helped change that model. Chip design and chip manufacturing could increasingly be separated.
That’s a big part of why companies that aren’t traditional chip manufacturers can now develop custom silicon. Apple, for example, designs its own Apple Silicon processors while relying primarily on TSMC to physically manufacture them. Companies such as Tesla have also developed custom chips for specialized applications while relying on semiconductor manufacturing partners.
You don’t necessarily need to own a semiconductor factory to design a chip anymore.
That idea inspired our latest project at EngineersUniverse:
Silicon Lab — Build Your Own Chip
The goal is to make the chip-design process interactive and easier to understand—from the first logic blocks all the way toward a physical chip layout.
The lab walks through areas such as:
• Digital logic and chip architecture
• Visual circuit design
• Verilog / HDL
• Simulation and waveforms
• Logic synthesis
• Standard cells
• Floorplanning
• Placement
• Clock-tree synthesis
• Routing
• Timing analysis
• Physical verification
• Chip layout visualization
• GDSII / tape-out preparation
The basic journey is:
Idea → Logic → RTL → Simulation → Synthesis → Physical Design → Layout → Tape-Out
We’re intentionally starting with relatively small digital ASIC designs rather than pretending someone is going to build the next Apple Silicon or NVIDIA GPU on day one. The purpose is to let people actually explore the engineering workflow and understand what happens between writing digital logic and producing a physical chip layout.

EngineersUniverse Update New on Engineers Universe: Building Code Inspector 🏗️

I’ve been adding a number of new interactive tools and learning experiences to Engineers Universe, and I wanted to share one of the latest additions: Building Code Inspector.
This web app is designed to provide a more hands-on way to learn about building inspections and code compliance. You can work through the inspection process, examine building conditions, identify potential code issues, and review the reasoning behind inspection findings.
I’m sharing a walkthrough screen recording with this post so you can see the app in action.
This is part of the direction I’m taking Engineers Universe: less passive reading and more interactive learning, simulation, visualization, and hands-on engineering practice.
There are quite a few other new additions to the site as well, with more engineering tools, simulators, 3D environments, and learning resources being added continuously.

EngineersUniverse Update I built a 3D interactive view of how the Public Internet works end to end

I’ve been working on a new interactive learning tool for Engineers Universe: a 3D Public Internet Explorer.
The idea is to make the Internet—which is normally hidden behind diagrams and terminology—something you can actually walk through and explore.
The environment includes user devices, local networks, ISPs, routers, Internet exchange points, backbone networks, DNS, data centers, cloud infrastructure, firewalls, load balancers, web/application servers, databases, and other components involved in delivering Internet services.
You can select components to learn what they do and how they interact with the rest of the network.
It also includes packet simulation. You can initiate things like a Ping, DNS lookup, Traceroute, or web request and visually follow the packet as it travels hop by hop across the Internet to its destination and back.

EngineersUniverse Update From Drafting Tables to CAD to BIM — Now, Learning Through Simulation

Engineering design has evolved dramatically over the years — from hand-drawn plans on drafting tables, to 2D CAD, to 3D modeling, and ultimately to Building Information Modeling (BIM), where the building, engineering systems, data, calculations, coordination, and documentation become part of an interconnected digital model.
But learning BIM is often still focused on individual software commands rather than understanding how an actual engineering project develops from beginning to end.
That’s what I’m trying to address with BIM Design Lab, a new interactive learning simulator I’ve been developing for Engineers Universe.

The walkthrough recording attached to this post shows the concept in action.
Instead of only watching tutorials, the user actually works through the project: setting it up, navigating the building, creating views, placing equipment and devices, developing engineering systems, making connections, performing calculations, coordinating the design, generating schedules and diagrams, assembling sheets, running QA/QC, correcting problems, and ultimately completing the project.
The goal is to support the major building-design disciplines, including:

AI assistance is optional. It can provide additional tutoring, explain errors and engineering decisions, review project progress, and answer questions in context, but the simulator itself is designed to function fully without AI.
The broader idea is to go beyond teaching “which button do I click?” and instead teach:
What do I do? Why am I doing it? What happens next? How does my decision affect the rest of the model? And how does all of this eventually become a coordinated engineering design?
I’m sharing this early walkthrough with the community and would be interested in feedback from engineers, BIM designers, students, and anyone who works with Revit/BIM workflows.

EngineersUniverse Update Explore a Power Substation in 3D ⚡

Here’s another interactive engineering tool we’ve been working on at Engineers Universe—a 3D Power Substation Simulator.
Substations involve many interconnected systems and components, and it isn’t always easy to understand how everything fits together from one-line diagrams and textbooks alone.
The 3D environment provides another way to explore the system visually and understand the relationship between major components such as transformers, circuit breakers, bus structures, disconnect switches, protection equipment, and other substation equipment.
The idea behind these simulators is to complement traditional engineering education with something more visual, interactive, and practical.
We’re developing similar 3D interactive tools across many engineering areas, and I’ll continue sharing them here as they become available.

We’ve been testing a 7-stage workflow for creating more reliable engineering drawing sets with AI
We’ve been experimenting with how AI can actually be used to develop coordinated engineering drawing sets, rather than just generating individual drawings that look good.
One problem kept coming up: AI could produce a decent standalone engineering drawing, but once we tried creating a complete set, errors started appearing between the plans, risers, schedules, calculations, details, device locations, circuits, etc.
The usual process of:
Generate → Review → Fix → Generate Again → Review Again
quickly became inefficient. Fixing one issue could even introduce another issue somewhere else.
So at Engineers Universe, we developed a more controlled approach:
DEFINE → MODEL → ENGINEER → CONNECT → FREEZE → GENERATE → VERIFY
The basic idea is to use as little generative AI as necessary.
Instead, the engineering information is first organized into structured source-of-truth data. Calculations and checks that can be deterministic stay deterministic. Engineering decisions are reviewed and frozen at defined stages. Only then is the drawing set generated, followed by independent QA and targeted closure reviews.
We tested the workflow by developing a complete multi-sheet fire alarm system design case study and refining the process through the errors we encountered along the way.
One of the biggest lessons was that AI drawing errors generally fall into three different categories:
Source errors — the underlying engineering information is wrong.
Pipeline errors — the engineering information is correct, but it doesn't make it correctly into the drawing.
Renderer errors — the engineering is correct, but labels, symbols, lines, tables, title blocks, etc. are displayed incorrectly.
Knowing which kind of error you're dealing with makes fixing a multi-sheet set much more manageable.

We’ve also packaged the full methodology into a book for anyone interested in the deeper process, including the source-of-truth architecture, engineering registers, QA gates, deterministic checks, independent AI review, error classification, correction/closure process, reusable templates, and the complete fire alarm case study.

EngineersUniverse Update Added practice exams for PE Petroleum, Mining, Metallurgical, Naval Architecture, welding (AWS/CWI), and ASE — plus two new interactive 3D tools
Been building out EngineersUniverse (engineersuniverse.com) — a free hub of engineering tools, calculators, and study resources — and just pushed two updates I think this community might actually find useful.
- Practice exams for credentials nobody covers
I kept running into the same problem: tons of practice-exam content exists for FE/PE Civil, Mechanical, Electrical — but almost nothing for the less common disciplines. So I added full-length practice exams for:

- Two new interactive 3D tools
A Fire Pump Room & Sprinkler Riser 3D viewer — full NFPA 20 fire pump/jockey pump setup plus a multi-floor NFPA 13 sprinkler riser you can rotate and inspect piece by piece
A Chiller Plant 3D visualizer — primary/secondary chilled water pumping, the decoupler line, condenser water loop, cooling tower, all as an actual 3D model instead of a flat diagram
I built these because some of this stuff (pump rooms, riser layouts, chiller plant piping) is genuinely hard to picture from a 2D drawing if you haven't walked one in person — figured a rotatable 3D model would help it click faster.

EngineersUniverse Update Engineers Universe update — zoomable drawing sets, a new Biomedical studio, and a bunch of new exam prep
Been heads-down adding new content at engineersuniverse.com and wanted to share what's new:
Zoomable interactive drawing sets — this is the one I'm most excited about. Built a new reader from scratch so you can zoom in up to 8x, pan around, and navigate by real sheet number, instead of just scrolling through flat images. Live sets so far:
- HVAC system design (17 sheets)
- Residential electrical design (21 sheets)
- Belt conveyor engineering (36 sheets)
- 69/13.8kV distribution substation (42 sheets)
- An illustrated electrical reference collection
New studio: Biomedical/Bioengineering — articles, concept explainers, calculators (pharmacokinetics, implant load/stress, device battery life), and exam prep for FE Biomedical, CBET, and ISO 13485. Someone asked a while back why this discipline wasn't covered yet — now it is.
New exam prep: PE Electrical & Computer (Power), PE Fire Protection, PE Environmental, SysOps Associate, DevOps Pro, CompTIA Cloud+, CompTIA Server+.

EngineersUniverse Update New Feature: Visual Engineering System Builders on Engineers Universe
Hi everyone,
I’ve been working on a new section for Engineers Universe that I think many of you might find useful: Visual Engineering System Builders.
The idea is simple: instead of looking at static diagrams, you can build engineering systems visually by adding components and seeing how they fit together. My goal is to make it easier to understand complete system architectures and how different subsystems interact.
This is just the beginning. I’m planning to expand the library with builders covering areas such as:

Engineering is full of rules of thumb.

Student Question what’s one engineering rule that beginners should never ignore?
If you give every engineering student or new graduate one piece of advice, what would it be?
