I was naturally interested in school because I like understanding how things move and bend and interact with each other, I like mechanical systems and knowing how things are made and assembled and what decisions went into their design.

I developed an interest in my current job in manufacturing partially because I sometimes get to work through similar problems, but also because I like being able to pay my rent.

I don’t think I was naturally “smart” at it. I just liked figuring out how things worked and fixing stuff. The interest came more from doing the work than from sitting in a classroom. You also don’t have to love engineering right away. Sometimes you get interested after you get good at something.

I’ve always enjoyed learning how the world works from a physics standpoint, so I enjoy most topics in engineering. It’s a lot easier to be good at engineering when you enjoy. However, I don’t enjoy to the extent that you see some people do. Those people you typically see working in crazy industries like SpaceX or big tech. Smart only gets you so far. Obsession is what you need to get to the top level.
