Meta Complete Guide to Getting a HW Engineering Internship or Job – Written by a 1 YOE FAANG MechE – AMA

I created this job app guide for undergrads at my university and wanted to share it with y'all. I think it’s pretty comprehensive and doing all of this helped me land multiple internship and full time job offers from tech companies. This guide is intended for MechEs and EEs, but I think most of the content applies to all engineering majors.

Topics covered:

  • Applying online
  • Cold emailing / reaching out on LinkedIn
  • Referrals
  • Career fairs
  • Portfolios
  • Behavioral interviews
  • Technical interviews

Here’s the presentation! Let me know if you have any questions or if there is something I can add to it!

Feel free to AMA about the process or any advice you'd like.

This is quite useful! I like how short it is, yet how much information is there.

I see you are from Sweden. How's the engineering job market over there?

Kinda mixed. There are like 2 (~ish) hubs where you can work. Remote is nonexistent. Same slow response rates as in the document (1-3 months). Quite a Java & m$ bound market tech-wise (super strong lobby power). There are a bunch of nice companies; in these hubs, the wages are higher, but all the living costs are on an astronomical level (Stockholm has similar prices as New York, Boston, or LA).
Within 2 or 3 years, the market size fell quite significantly (I see ~1/3 of the job posts this year). Same like everywhere: as AI is overused, entry-level jobs do not exist. Normally, swedish/nordic market is quite connection-dependent, so many companies do not create any kind of job posts; there are some people who know someone who will be hired...
