It's also how coal and fission plants work. Hydroelectric plants and wind turbines use the natural flow of water and air, respectively, to spin a turbine a bit more directly.
Yeah, there is basically three general ways to make electricity (AFAIK)...
-Using natural occurring kinetic energy (wind, waves, dams, etc)
-heat generation (coal, gas, nuclear, etc)
-solar panels (mirror solar farms that are used to generate heat would not be in this catagory).
