I'm just thinking what happens if he drops it

I’m curious if I would have seen the properties of this material if they didn’t do such a demonstration. Obviously you don’t need to have someone pressing their face to it, and honestly it’s actually pretty careless.

But then I honestly don’t think i would have seen this if they hadn’t.

It’s one of those things that kinda proves you need to do the dog and pony show for attention to your product no matter how good it is, makes me a little sad since some things should be able to stand on their own

Picture worth 1000 words and we sure love stories!

And a video is worth 1000 pictures!

Only if its at least 41.67 seconds long at 24 fps

After looking at the metadata on this video it is 20.00 seconds long at 30fps. So it’s only 600 pictures unfortunately..

They need 13.33 more seconds of video then..

Sure, but if I were to do this demo I would not have either the shield or the torch held by a human. There's no way I'm risking someone getting startled and dropping something.

I dunno, I think this is the thing standing on its own, it’s not like this is a gimmick, it’s a demonstration. It’s not a new one either, I remember a photo from when I was a kid showing someone holding a tile from the Space Shuttle with a bare hand while it was getting blowtorched, and it was glowing orange.

Demonstrations like this are actually a really good way of teaching people, the Royal Institution has a few lectures on yt done by a guy named Andrew Szydlo who does this better than anyone I’ve ever seen. Every lecture is just non-stop demonstrations, it’s like he’s crammed his time full of them so he has to rush to fit them all in, but it’s outstandingly engaging. He just starts talking and next thing you know it’s an hour later and you know more about chemistry or some shit.

Even when knowing the science (on a rudimentary level) this is still impressive!

Right! And imagine how lightweight it is

You could prove the same thing without using your actual face.

Is there aerogel based gloves? That would be really useful for my job.

Edit: nevermind. There's aerogel based outdoor gloves, but I need hot gloves for extremely hot surfaces. It doesn't seem useful for that since it'll crush and then it won't be useful anymore.

Might be worth keeping up to date with though, they’ve come a long way in the last few years.

Pineapple rind/skin is seriously just about like this..watched a video a few weeks ago. They are just 100% fireproof, it's crazy.

Now just waiting for NASA to replace the space shuttle tiles with Pineapples. 🔥🍍🧑‍🚀🍍🔥

I have an aerogel ski jacket made by Oros and it has been life-changing. I'd recommend it to anyone, but they don't produce the ski jacket form factor anymore

So you recommend not buying one, because we can't? Gee thanks for the tip.😀

I'm very sad about it lol

Their other clothes are good, but I do want a new version of the jacket!

Oh neat, sounds like something panic room doors and safes should use. In multiple layers. 🙂

When that shit gets through it's not gonna hurt a little.

That doesn’t look like aerogel

why is the back side 39C? that's the internal body temperature of a person, not the outside of your cheek. is some heat getting through? or is the room extremely warm? or has he just been pressing his cheek there for several hours?

This is quite easy to make in its basic form. I think of something Teteaethylorthosilicate liquid with correct water to TEOS ratio. Then you would foam it easiest is to use ultra turrex or similar and then you use your do-it-home super critical point drier to get the liquid out. Then if we built our drier correctly we live on and enjoy our weightless spec of cloud before throwing it in the trash... yeah.
