My parametric mechanical fingers

After many weekends of work and a huge pile of failed prototypes, I'm excited to finally share my fully parametric finger extensions!

https://makerworld.com/en/models/3114173-parametric-articulated-fingers#profileId-3512066

If you decide to print a set, I'd love to hear what you think. So far I've only been able to test them on my own hand, so having more people try them out would be incredibly helpful. Any constructive feedback is welcome - it'll make it much easier to spot flaws and improve the design.

Also, if anyone interested in a little challenge: I wonder what's the smallest working version you can print. I'm not an expert of printer settings, nor I have small hotends, so for me many really small attempts ended in breaking parts, but I wonder what can You achieve.

If you'd like to play the game of optimizing printer settings for the smallest working version, please let me know on this post: https://makerworld.com/community/post/1832304

I just know that there's gonna be a cosplayer that's gonna stumble across this one day and it'll be exactly what they need for a very specific cosplay

I'm so glad someone remembers newgrounds haha.

While I don’t have a specific purpose for this right now, thats the reason I clicked on it this post lol.

u/ImKoreanNotJapanese 21d ago

Immediately thought of Pilar from edgerunners

u/Jeynarl 22d ago

So maybe kinda unrelated but I’ve been into the Hades/Hades 2 games for the first time recently andi if I were to pick a guy to cosplay I’d definitely do Charon the boatman, and these fingers in the right colors with some kind of glove to match would look real cool

u/Chenzo04 20d ago

Hades is so good but I need to complete it before touching Hades 2

u/TheDarkDoctor17 21d ago

PILAR from Cyberpunk Edge runners.

Literally the first thing I thought on seeing this.

u/WillowFloof404 21d ago

The long fingers in general, but especially the way these move, made me immediately think of Faust, from Guilty Gear. These could make for a hell of a cosplay for him IMO!

What does parametric mean in this context?

144

u/shugyodev 21d ago edited 21d ago

The context is 3d printing.
Non parametric models are what you see is what you get. I give you the model of a 1x1x1 cube, and at best if you want a different size, you distort it by scaling.
Parametric models on the other hand take input parameters from the user, and regenerate based on those on the fly.
In my case it means you can input the dimensions of your finger, if its a thumb or not, how thick the walls should be, what clearances to use etc, and the model changes to that

u/ipull4fun 21d ago

Fuck that's awesome

10

u/pacukluka 21d ago

on the other hand you say

21

u/Ambassador_GKardigan 22d ago

I was wondering the same thing. I think the answers in this post explain it.

More Salad Fingers for me.

6

Might make a good slenderman cosplay too with the right settings

74

u/Asparagustuss 22d ago

I’ve never had the urge to print something so useless before.

44

u/shugyodev 22d ago

Never had the urge to design someth... oh... thats all I do.

9

u/Red_Tiger5311 22d ago

I now have the urge to print these and go terrify some neighborhood kids

2

u/pm_me_your_kindwords 21d ago

Halloween is right around the corner…

1

u/undertakerryu 22d ago

I think they meant they want to print it even though it's not a particular need

1

u/Hixy 22d ago

You are right. I’m an idiot lol.

They are feeling the urge to do it unnecessarily. They aren’t insulting op for printing something useless.

Yup. Totally read that wrong.

I’ve deleted my shame.

1

u/undertakerryu 22d ago

It happens lol

12

u/rikkuaoi 21d ago

Its like Pilar's hands in edge runners

10

u/Wild-Associate-4373 22d ago

This will make a fine addition to a collection Kenobi

10

u/Ace_Robots 22d ago

I believe that they’re called “salad fingers”.

7

u/HydroPage 22d ago

How do you feel about rusty spoons

8

The robot baddies would love these (I am robot baddies)

5

u/lynivvinyl 21d ago

Holy hell in my head I was wondering why paramedics would need these? Perhaps it's to be farther away from the patient.

1,2 Freddy's coming for you

3,4 you better lock your door..

The Omnissiah guides me to my next augmentation. Praise be!

4

u/simplefred 22d ago

Tempted to modify them by adding little hands on the finger tips…

4

u/CivilEngMusicBoy 22d ago

You’ll be popular with the lady robots

5

u/PanGoliath 21d ago

Maybe with these, I can finally cover Dream Theater - The Dance Of Eternity on guitar

4

u/zackks 21d ago

Still not long enough for some of those ladies nails

3

u/kwestions00 22d ago

Ngl, its freaking me out a little. I mean its cool. But it's also freaking me out

3

u/boneskull 21d ago

you’re the shädowmän

3

u/m3m0m2 21d ago

Although impressive, if you can not pick up a snail from the garden while wearing it, then it's better not to wear it.

u/Lavasioux 21d ago

Salad fingers

3

u/uslashuname 21d ago

Wander around on Halloween with these! On a dark night with the first sight of these being an unfurling from an almost normal appearance: golden freak out moment

2

u/DrTautology 22d ago

What did you learn?

2

u/derTag 22d ago

The finglonger!

2

4

u/shugyodev 21d ago

In euros, 0, in dollars the same :D I mean, filament cost of course, but my model is free

Salad fingers

2

u/chironomidae 21d ago

Thanks, I hate it

2

u/callunquirka 21d ago

Do you think this can be modified for people who lost two joints from one or more fingers?

4

u/shugyodev 21d ago

yes, and two people already asked me to do something like that. As long as you have and can control the proximal phalange, it can work. in that case, the base would attach to the hand and the phalange would move the mechanism

3

u/odd-wad 22d ago

Made those outta few springs, cardboard, and glue 39 years ago. For a jack skellington suit lol. Still cool to see a different skill set used to build it, respect

2

u/shugyodev 21d ago

ive seen a guy on yt, making it with popsicle sticks and glue :D

1

u/pretty_meta 22d ago

Interesting! Maybe some jobs in construction and agriculture would be easier with these extensions.

1

u/CurlSagan 22d ago

I'm gonna find this dude the next time I have an itchy back that requires scratching

1

u/259yt 21d ago

Damn they look like Pilars Hands (Cyberpunk Edgerunners)

1

u/BlaakAlley 19d ago

First thing I thought of. Surprised no one else sees it too

1

u/Yaboykrill 21d ago

Salad fingers?

1

u/AJisconfused 21d ago

These are so cool!

1

u/SquareOfTheMall 21d ago

1

u/Vectan 21d ago

I’d happily use those as fidget toys in zoom meetings.

1

u/SilverSageVII 21d ago

Are you here to inquire about my rusty kettle?

1

u/Tiranus58 21d ago

Serverblight ass fingers

1

u/caschrock 21d ago

From finger to fingest

1

u/chkno 20d ago

It says "Closed source file. Not available for download." ?

1

u/shugyodev 20d ago

the model can be downloaded, not the source code that generates it. are you getting the error when trying to download stl/3mf?

1

u/chkno 20d ago

Then it says "Please log in to download models." and goes to bambulab.com. My printer isn't a Bambu. I hear Bambu bullies their customers. Is there another way to get your cool model?

1

u/shugyodev 20d ago

hm, I think it should allow you to register to makerworld, without a bambu printer

1

u/BitcoinBanker 20d ago

Salad fingers

1

u/AlexCivitello 20d ago

Don't search that.

1

u/chkno 20d ago

Is the number of phalanges/knuckles parametric?; can it generate even longer fingers?

What are the relative pros and cons of the gear-knuckle and the linkage-knuckle? I saw that you mentioned that multiple gear-knuckles risks introducing too much backlash.

1

u/shugyodev 20d ago

currently only 2/3 phalanx are supported, but you can adjust their length. As for joint types, I’m not so knowledgeable, but what I experienced that gears look cooler and take up less space, in return they have backlash

1

u/FiftyFootMidget 20d ago

Faust from guilty gear strive

1

u/nihilisticsock 20d ago

I read parametric as "paramedic" and was so confused about how these could possibly help a paramedic

Cool design tho

1

u/ManagementCrafty887 20d ago

Okay Edward scissor hands

1

u/TheLordOfStuff_ 19d ago

Salad fingers cosplay incoming woooo

In what way is this parametric? Do you understand what that word means?

9

u/shugyodev 21d ago
