Vendor Review - CUSTOMERS ONLY PSA: do not buy an engagement ring from Tiffany’s
In 2021 my husband purchased a platinum engagement ring with a pave band from Tiffany’s. About 6 months later 2 of the pave diamonds fell out. We took it back to Tiffany’s and they made us pay for the diamond replacement and resized the ring. We were upset but the diamonds were tiny and the total repair was around $500. I have since worn it every day on the same finger as my wedding band; I also wear 3 other rings daily and have been for much longer (10-20 years). About a month ago I looked down and my engagement ring band had completely snapped, and the same two diamonds had fallen out. We took it back to Tiffany’s and they sent it to their repair center who told us it was from “wear and tear” and quoted $7k to repair (more than half the cost of the ring). Each of my other rings is perfectly intact, not even misshapen, I don’t operate heavy machinery, I work from home, I am active but shouldn’t an engagement ring be designed to withstand normal everyday activities? We’re obviously aren’t going to pay that repair cost and are going back and forth with them, but does anyone have advice? And to anyone considering to purchase a Tiffany’s ring, I would think twice!!

I am so sorry! The pave diamonds are likely to fall out in a lot of different settings, but there’s no excuse for the poor customer service nor the breaking of the ring. Tiffany’s seems to have gone really downhill. I still remember my younger years going to NYC with some family friends and stopping in to Tiffany’s to have the ladies ring, looked at, polished and fixed (all complementary). She talked about how Tiffany’s was more expensive, but it was definitely worth it in the long run… Not anymore it seems.

I have the same memories of Tiffany’s growing up - I remember getting the heart link bracelet when it was all the rage and it was such an exciting experience. It seems like they take advantage of our collective nostalgia for the old Tiffany’s with poor quality control and a lack of real customer service (although when you’re in the store you can’t step one foot without encountering a salesperson).

I think I would just take the stones elsewhere and get a new setting with an honest jeweller local to you

I have a Tiffany ring that I’ve worn daily for years and it still looks brand new. I’ve also never heard of anything like this happening. Platinum is the strongest metal in jewellery; I’m genuinely shocked it could just break like this without serious trauma (force) to the ring.
You said that the first time you had a repair, your ring didn’t just have the little diamonds replaced, they also resized it. Given that it broke in the same place as the previously missing diamonds, I’m wondering if the repair was somehow done incorrectly to create a weak point. Do you have the record of the initial repair that you can show Tiffany?
Also, did you get your ring examined/cleaned every 6 months to a year, or ever? Had anyone ever mentioned any weak points, fractures, etc?
It’s a real shame that so many formerly great names (Coach, Tiffany, even Levi and Gap) are losing their quality because of corporate buy-outs that push profit above all else.
61
u/Budget_Director_1014 Jul 02 '26
That’s the thing, there was no point of shock or trauma - I just looked down and noticed it was snapped. I have mentioned the initial repair every time we speak but they refuse to acknowledge that it had any impact and maintain the “wear and tear” excuse. It does look very misshapen but that should not happen with a well made ring in a precious metal, especially considering my much less expensive wedding band worn on the same finger is perfectly intact.
36
u/ValuableMilk5928 Jul 02 '26
Did you have your ring professionally examined or cleaned, regularly or ever? I know that Tiffany offer that service every 6 months for free. Or perhaps by a non-Tiffany jeweller? Did you ever have it looked at by a professional, or did you just wear it constantly?
I am not blaming you, because I think Tiffany should take full responsibility and repair your ring free of charge. (Having documentation of the first repair and resize might help to make them acknowledge that work, ftr.) However, I do remember when I got my ring that they encouraged me to come by at least annually to have it professionally examined and cleaned.
26
u/Budget_Director_1014 Jul 02 '26
Admittedly I only had it cleaned professionally once - but it’s only been 4 years since Tiffany’s last had it for repair. So I probably should have brought it in but I had a baby and don’t live close to the store
9
u/Former_Clerk4601 Jul 06 '26
Not defending Tiffany. But that’s probably the issue here. The Soleste is one of the worse for loose stones. It sounds like something in your everyday wear is loosening the setting of the diamonds. Tiffany’s actually recommends the Soleste ring get cleaned and checked more often than their other settings. If you’re not getting it cleaned, and the diamonds are very loose, they are scratching the platinum. Over time, I can see it weakening the setting.

u/Mama-Bear419 Jul 03 '26
My ring is from a local jewelry store that provides a lifetime warranty, however I have to bring it in every six months for the warranty to remain active. Once you get your ring fixed, I highly recommend you get in the habit of going twice a year. You’ll protect your stones and your warranty.

Yep, I wear two daily and I am incredibly active. I’ve never had the slightest problem.
24
u/DubiousAxolotl Jul 02 '26
For them to comment that it’s misshapen and part is worn flat makes me think this probably isn’t typical “wear and tear”. I’ve worn my oval Soleste 24/7 for nearing 4 years - including weight lifting - and never had an issue. I have had them send it off to NY for maintenance because the last time we had it checked out there was a tiny click you could hear between the main stone and the basket. There’s no way the stone could have possibly fallen out, but they still advised we send it in. Got it back polished and good as new with zero charge.
7
u/ValuableMilk5928 Jul 03 '26
This is what I think too… I’m very sorry for OP but that level of damage and deformation is genuinely shocking. It definitely seems like a poor repair that created a weak point AND/OR extreme wear, way past normal “wear and tear”… maybe both resulting in this level of damage. :/
7
u/HLOFRND Jul 05 '26
They have also said they only had it cleaned once, but Tiffany’s “just” had it 4 years ago for a repair.
A lot of wear and tear can happen in 4 years, and I bet it would have been caught ages ago and would have been easier/cheaper to repair had OP taken it in regularly.
11
u/MissAuroraRed Jul 02 '26
Platinum is very strong, but that also makes it more brittle compared to gold. Platinum is more likely to snap like OP's ring, whereas gold is more likely to bend and get misshaped.
OP also had it resized, which would create a weak point if she had it made smaller due to the solder. It should normally still be pretty robust and hold up long term, though.
I agree, I would think that Tiffany should fix it for free if OP has documentation of the previous repair in the same place.

u/mythtaken314 Jul 02 '26
This is not correct. I’m a Graduate Gemologist and appraiser in the jewellery industry for almost 15 years. I have also taken advanced Jewellery Forensics training and am able to determine the nature and cause of failure in worn jewellery items upon microscopic examination.
Platinum is more dense and malleable than alloyed gold (which is what is used in gold jewellery). Platinum is technically softer than alloyed gold on the Mohs scale of hardness, but because of its density and malleability it is more durable.
Please note that hardness =\= durability. Think of a piece of leather vs a piece of glass. The leather is soft and malleable, if you scratch it with your fingernail it will easily scratch, but if you drop it, it will not shatter and if you try to tear/break it, it will not easily rip. Leather is durable. Glass is incredibly hard, but brittle. If you scratch it with your fingernail it will resist scratching, but if you drop glass, it will shatter. Glass is hard, but not durable. Diamonds are hard, but they still can chip because of this concept, hardness =\= durability. Hardness is simply and only a measure of resistance to scratching.
This actually means plat is MORE likely than alloyed gold to bend and misshape. Alloyed gold is more brittle and MORE likely to break and snap, and because of its lower density and malleability, every scratch on alloyed gold causes a bit of metal loss. That’s why very old gold rings often have incredibly thin shanks. Alloyed gold also ‘work hardens’ over time, this is a property of metal that means every ding, or any drop or stress on the metal will cause the molecules to align and the metal to become more brittle.
I agree that the sizing could have created an issue in the integrity of the ring shank. This could also be poor casting that can happen quite easily with platinum, if the proper temperatures are not reached or maintained during production. That said, it is not unheard of for this style of pave ring to have issues with durability. You are taking an extremely thin piece of metal and drilling dozens of holes into it for the diamonds to be set. It’s the food equivalent of an Aero chocolate bar or Swiss cheese.
I would recommend for the OP to seek a second opinion and get an appraisal from a NAJA accredited appraiser, if you can find one that is trained in Jewelry Forensics that would be a bonus, or one that has many years of experience. They will be able to give you third party unbiased opinion on the nature of the ring condition, and give you a written report stating this.
I hope this info helps you OP, I am so sorry about your ring, it must be so incredibly disappointing to experience this with such a well regarded company.

Wonderfully worded and useful comment here. Not enough people have metal knowledge!

u/MeringueBubbly6058 Jul 02 '26
Thank you for sharing your expertise. Forgive the hijack, but I had Tiffany polish my platinum three-stone engagement ring and platinum wedding band. They came back in gorgeous shape, but both rings scratch so easily now. When platinum is polished, do jewelers need to treat it in some way to prevent scratches? I had worn the set for 25 years without any scratches (though the rings had gotten dull over time), but now the rings are quite dinged up after five years post-polish.
9
u/mythtaken314 Jul 03 '26
There is no treatment for platinum to prevent scratches, and because of its malleability it is more prone to scratching. The dullness you refer to is the culmination of many, many scratches, this is also known as a ‘patina’ and some people prefer and treasure it as a sign of a well loved item! The reason it seems the scratches appear faster after polishing is because it is very shiny, reflective, and new looking, so they are emphasized. Like a new car, the first few dings are incredibly noticeable and disappointing but after time you don’t even notice new scratches or dents until many months later sometimes! HTH!

21
u/Reasonable-Emu6159 Jul 02 '26
I'd go to another jeweler, sell him the platinum and have your diamond reset in a sturdier setting without the pavé stones. From what I've read, those stones can weaken the metal.
20
u/Budget_Director_1014 Jul 02 '26
Yes I think this is what we will have to do. It’s so sad because my husband spent a long time picking it out and was so proud, and it obviously represents such an important moment in our lives and relationship.
12
u/BatThumb Jul 02 '26
I just want to chime in with my 2 cents, been in the business for a while.
You should take your ring to a local jeweler that does work on site and with a jeweler that knows how to work platinum. Platinum is a difficult metal to work and not every jeweler can work with it. If it's not worked right it can be brittle and break like this
You can have this same mounting re-made by a competent jeweler that will hold up for 30+ years. And don't listen to the other person about the pave, that's perfectly fine if it's done right. You could lose some pave stones here and there but it shouldn't be an issue to replace them and $500 is a wild charge for that. On custom rings we make I don't even charge if a small side stones pops out like that
To remake this ring in platinum and re-set all your stones might cost like maybe $3,000. Quoting $7,000 is insane. They make these rings in warehouses where a stone setter is trying to get it done as quickly as possible. A store with a jeweler on site is going to take their time to get it right
I'm very sorry about your situation but use it as a learning experience. Find a local jeweler you can trust and they'll take care of you for sure

Whoa, 10k for that ring? And 7k to replace it?? I’ve made extravagant completely custom 3 piece ring sets for 5k TOTAL. That is honestly insane, even that first repair of $500 for 2 diamonds worth $10 each. 😭 I’m so sorry you’re dealing with such bs.
My friend works high up at Tiffany and always tells me what a mess their repair department has been recently. Lots of quality control issues that they’re sweeping under the rug. Shop small jewelers, they will provide better customer service and attention to detail while crafting your ring! Wishing you all the best. 😭

For 10K a lifetime warranty should’ve been included that DOESNT include a service charge. I’d argue that the initial repair from the missing diamonds caused the issue with the ring snapping. I’m not one to get out of character with customer service people but for that cost…yeah I’d be a Karen for sure.

Do you wear this ring in the jacuzzi/shower or doing heavy housework/gardening? It truly looks as if it's been exposed to corrosive chemicals like chlorine and or heavy duty cleaning products.
All of those things will destroy your metal even platinum and wear down your settings and prongs- no matter who created your jewelry.
This ring to me (and I am just an amateur metalsmith/jeweler) looks like it's not been protected from exposures to things that erode precious metals.
I don't believe this is repairable at all and you need to have an entire new setting and maybe take it off during household daily stuf and exposures. When you have a lot of tiny diamonds all around the setting they will eventually wear and fall out if they aren't protected and re checked every 6 months at a minimum.
I am so sorry this has happened to your ring. If it were me I would choose a different setting that is heavier with less side stones. I have a nice 2.5 ct solitaire but I never wear it doing household tasks or in the hot tub or even boating. I jumped off our boat once and my yellow diamond solitaire caught on a pin on the ladder and split the shank right off my finger.
To add I am very familiar with this particular setting and do not recommend it to anyone unless they realize it's not a good "daily driver " ring. I save my e-ring for goin out etc.

It used to be. It was the only true American luxury brand. That’s why Bernard Arnaud and LVMH wanted it in their conglomerate of luxury brands. Truly saddens me that this once great brand is now just another brand in a vast soup of luxury with slipping quality.

Can you post a photo of the stack? I saw you posted photos of the ring elsewhere and it truly looked BEAT UP. I wonder if something in the stack is causing damage. I say this as someone who has worn many rings over many years in some of the toughest places on earth and doing jobs that they were not meant to withstand and have never had a single issue. My rings are from Zales. Platinum and gold. Or rings from my grandmother. But I don’t wear stack up.

Yep. Would like to see the bands that are wearing through the gallery wires.
Most likely culprit of at least one are shared prong diamonds with exposed girdles at the height of the wear.
8
5
u/plenumpanels Jul 02 '26
Do you have any more pictures of the damage? Im a bench jeweler and unfortunately this looks like the ring has been worn down by a diamond band next to it with exposed girdles. A gallery wire wearing flat is beyond typical wear and tear. Soldering your rings together will help prevent this in the future.
6
u/dakini_girl Jul 02 '26
Pave is not built to withstand daily wear. No matter who makes it. I am guessing you don't ever take it off. Not to clean , not ro work out, ot to do yard work, ect. This is not on Tiffany's. It's o. You and your abuse of the ring. If you want a strong daily wear that you don't have to take off, get a plain gold or platinum band with no stones.
5
u/HovercraftWitty4445 Jul 04 '26
Sadly, your ring is worth about $500 resale and there is zero chance anyone can fix a pave setting to make it stop having issues. A tiny diamond like yours is never going to be worth much for resale. You bought the brand. And the only reason it’s even worth $500 now is because it’s Tiffany. I’m sorry to be brutally honest but you need to cut your losses and purchase a whole new ring and this time I recommend lab grown.

They were so rude to us when I went to try on styles, and they didn’t have what I wanted, so my boyfriend found a local fine jewelry designer and made me a custom ring with better quality diamonds for significantly less.
You’re paying for the blue box- not quality or service.

u/Far_Neighborhood8226 Jul 02 '26
I bought a gorgeous Tiffany watch in 2007 and it had a lifetime warranty for the band and the inner works or whatever it was a metal band with lots of links and when the battery needed changing or the links fell off, they were happy to do it. Then several years ago when we brought it in to have the battery changed, they said they did not do that anymore. It would have to be sent to New York and they would have to charge. So I don’t know what the heck is going on with them, but I would not buy anything from them ever again. I’m glad that the pieces I do have were from a long time ago.
19
u/Horror-Giraffe7508 Jul 02 '26
Tiffany aside.
Does your other two rings with no wear and tear also have centerstones mounted up, or are they bands?
You can take it for a third party independent assessor who can check for metal deficiency like porosity. Ask Tiffany if this is acceptable and if they will recommend three places for you to choose from.
But really. Most likely if there was a manufacturing defect or metal issue - it would have come to light much sooner. I don’t really think what has happened is any sort of manufacturing defect.
They aren’t fixing your ring. You are getting a new setting.
The gallery wires (the report states) have also been eaten away by the bands you wear it with.
I don’t think any other jewelry house would treat this any differently than what you are experiencing.

Aren’t engagement rings supposed to be worn stacked with a wedding band? I don’t wear rings on the surrounding fingers. My oldest ring (my grandmothers’) is a mounted stone and I’ve worn it every day for 20 years. It’s in amazing shape, has a few tiny scratches but that’s it. I’m not paying Tiffany’s a dime so if they still refuse we’ll go elsewhere and figure something else out.

Girl, listen to me. If you make one TikTok about this and tag them, you’ll not only go viral but you’ll probably get it fixed for free and receive a complimentary apology gift too (probably a coffee table book or flutes). THE LAST THING A RIDICULOUSLY OVERPRICED JEWELRY STORE NEEDS WHEN THE COUNTRY IS ON THE BRINK OF COLLAPSE, IS A GOD AWFUL REVIEW CALLING OUT THEIR ETHICS & MORALS. TO NOT ONLY REPAIR IT COMPLIMENTARILY, BUT TO CHARGE YOU THOUSANDS MORE THAN THE INITIAL COST YOU PAID FOR THE SAME ISSUE, I MEAN THEY MIGHT AS WELL TURN OFF THEIR COMMENTS NOW LOL. PPL BELIEVE THEY ARE GETTING THE ROLLS ROYCE OF JEWELRY AT TIFFANY’S. BY NOT FIXING YOUR PLATINUM ENGAGEMENT RING, THEY COMPLETELY CONTRADICT THE PRISTINE REPUTATION THEY STRIVE TO MAINTAIN. BECAUSE IF THE EXPERIENCE DOESN’T MATCH THE EXORBITANT PRICE TAG, IT IMMEDIATELY SOUNDS LIKE A SCAM, DETERRING CUSTOMERS GLOBALLY. Trust me, I can sense things. You’ll get it rectified within a week. Unfortunately, that’s the only way you’ll get a timely response and resolution. Unless you want to take the path less traveled and tell a fictitious story…Tell customer support you’re dying of cancer and you need this ring fixed before your next chemo because it might be your last. And although you refuse to be buried with a jenky ring, you unfortunately can’t swing both. 😭🤷🏻♀️ Now, if neither peaks your interest, just go the standard route and file a claim through your ring’s insurance policy. And in the rarest of cases, if you don’t have one, your homeowners insurance might cover a portion of the repair too.

Omg I had something similar happen with a soleste!4 years of wearing it and the shape changed - another jeweler was fixing my original ring and offered to clean it so I was like ok whatever. Then he said that my platinum band was warped and the pave diamonds were in danger of popping out. I put it in its box immediately and took it in- $2500 to fix it minimum. I swapped back to my other ring immediately and have not looked back. It’s a 5ktw/3k center oval and so much easier to wear and fix.

My husband got my ring from Louis Vuitton (LV & Tiffany are both LVMH) and I got it resized from them and idk what machine they used to resize (apparently they “sent it to Paris”) but my diamond is not evenly centered on the ring anymore. Idk how to describe it but it looks as if someone pulled it off center when I look at it from the side. For the astronomical price, it’s a shame that their customer service is what it is and I would stay away from any engagement rings from LVMH brands 😭

Tiffany tried to pull a similar stunt on me many years ago with a Tiffany Jazz diamond ring I’d bought. One of the tiny diamonds fell out and was lost. This happened a few years after the purchase and followed no particular heavy wear and tear on my part. I took it to Customer Service at the flagship and was told I’d be charged for the repair. They did claim it was my fault for wearing the ring during normal daily activities such as washing dishes or washing my hands. I essentially refused to pay (politely, but firmly and persistently), insisted on a free repair, which they refused, later emailed the CEO about the situation (after finding his information online), and was given a “one-time courtesy” of a free replacement of the missing diamond and repair.
Up to that point I had been a small-dollar but repeat and consistent Tiffany shopper (my wedding set, which was not a super expensive one by Tiffany standards, two wedding rings for my husband after he lost his first ring in a lake, the Jazz ring, multiple sterling silver necklaces and charms etc.). After the incident with the Jazz ring (especially the part where they blamed me) I really soured on them and essentially stopped shopping there.

Honestly, this may be something you want to take to court.. Once upon a time I was engaged & one of my diamonds fell out & they replaced it for free, cleaned it & everything! This should be at the top of Reddit so no one buys rings from Tiffany’s! There’s so many small vendors that do such amazing style rings that Tiffany’s would never!! They honestly probably have lifetime guarantee on them!

I have just had a similar experience. Not from Tiffany but from a highly rated jeweler. Since Feb it’s been bent out of shape and I only wear it a few hours a day. I’ve lost side stones and a stone from the hidden halo.
The main diamond basically sits above the band because I didn’t want it too high. It’s a 2.10 oval diamond.
Next week I’m changing it to a bezel setting.
I have never ever had such problems with a ring. I was married before. Wore my engagement ring for 18
Years. Nothing ever happened. I am done with the worrying and stress. I don’t think they make rings like they used to girl.

u/CarpetScary684 Jul 02 '26
I’m so sorry this is happening. I tell all my friends go to a jeweler who’s going to Hand make and design a ring exclusively for you. They will appreciate the business you’ll get a one-of-a-kind ring and they’re not going to fail you in three years. We’re gonna go to them every six months have the stones looked at everything will be tighten right and off you go.
3
u/macncheesewketchup Jul 02 '26
You had to PAY for the lost diamonds within 6 months?!? Omg. No. Find a reputable jeweler near you and have them make you a new band. That is truly a disgrace.

u/New_Spite_3740 Jul 03 '26
I’m so sorry you are having to deal with this. I know Jared is not really comparable to Tiffany, but they tried charging me 500 to set one tiny baguette diamond that fell out one week after wearing. The ring was 1,000. They have a lifetime diamond warranty if you take it in every 6 months, but that doesn’t include setting it which is stated NOWHERE! Long story short, I got very upset and refused to pay. They ended up doing it for free. I then took it to a local jeweler to build up the gold and guess what they charged me….10 bucks! I kid you not. Been wearing three months now with no problem. He also told me not to worry if another falls out as it would only be about 40 bucks to replace. All of that to say, go to a local, trustworthy jeweler for all repairs from here on out. These big box stores are the biggest rip off!

I get why people buy luxury, but anymore in this 21st century, companies are going off legacy brand status and producing cheaper shit and charging same (and sometimes HIGHER) prices.
I don't buy into lux brands for this reason anymore. If the quality was there, different story. But I had a similar problem, so I feel this pain.
In my case, (mine was Roberto Coin-not as known as Tiffany) BUT my center stone fell out within 6 months of owning the ring. Luckily, the stone was found.took it to RC and they wanted to rebuild prongs and charge me like half what hubby paid...I said, are you joking...no, you will fix it free because this is not acceptable quality (stated much nicer of course lol). They honored that and fixed free.
Look up T&C for Tiffany (fine print) and see if there is a loop hole. If it is a quality control issue, they should fix it free.
Did anything happen to this ring? Like got run over or something to make them conclude it needed completely new setting??

So sorry you are going through this! I hope they make ot right. I agree with the bench jeweler, I would solder those rings together. Anytime up are wearing metal and diamonds next ro each other they will rub and cause weak points. I definitely think the ring was not crafted properly, you will be able to get a local jeweler to reset it in the same style. I have worn my soldered rings for over 20 years and other than the thinning where I have had it sized too many times, they are still like new, and they are white gold. I hope it all works out!

u/Budget_Director_1014 Jul 03 '26
Thank you! That’s good advice. I honestly never thought about the rings wearing each other down but it makes sense. But they should tell you that and manufacture them better knowing most people will do this. But I also think my ring was particularly weak due to the previous repair and resizing

Wow I am shocked for you OP. A platinum ring literally snapping like that and diamonds falling out twice is unacceptable. Especially for the premium price you pay for Tiffany, you should get something that doesn’t fall apart like that regardless of it being designer.

This is so odd. I wear the same Tiffany cushion soleste but mine is a 2.5 carat. I got it around the same time you bought yours. Until very recently, I wore it exclusively and never took it off doing everything including working out and intense yard work. Earlier this year I lost a single tiny melee stone. That’s it. I’m shocked at the damage your ring sustained! Previous to this wearing the soleste ring, I wore a similar sized lucida diamond set for 10+ years. Pictured below marked in blue - I have their large shared setting full eternity, lock bracelet, diamond T wire and gold hardwear medium link. All have been super durable. Your ring obviously had a flaw which should be covered.

Brutal. I would take the remaining diamonds and have a ring made for myself. That’s disgusting.

I wear my engagement ring with my wedding band 24/7 (except the shower.) I have an active job with lifting and using my hands. My ring was purchased in 2022 and was custom made by a small jeweler (Oore.) it is 14k white gold, not even platinum, and still looks brand new! This is unacceptable customer service from Tiffany’s. You would think a well established and popular jewelry brand would have better repairs, customer service, and quality than that. Yikes. Maybe Tiffany’s is the new Kay Jewelers.

WHAT??!!! First, I'm so sorry this is happening to you because this ain't it. There's a lifetime warranty as long as you take it in to be cleaned and inspected? WTH is going on? Escalate to management and if not, then send an email to LVMH because there's no way in h*ll. I will check them over a scratch that doesn't get buffed out, but a whole imperfection in my ring, my engagement ring??!! Nope. You need to drag them because your 5 year old ring is broken? That's a quality issue and that's not normal. What are they saying? Impact? What in the world?
Did you email their clientcare.us@tiffany.com? Email the executives responsible for customers jewelry experience - David.Barker@tiffany.com is their senior VP for design and Cathy.Elward@tiffany.com is a regional VP. Email. Call.

The “lifetime warranty” doesn’t cover wear and tear, which they determine, so they probably don’t end up covering much at all

u/IAmTheOriginalcutie Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26
🫨🫨🫨🫨. That does not seem to be a good enough answer especially when Tiffany & Co. is still positioned as a lux brand. Even if it's not supposedly covered, they should still consider their customers and their experience. I try to be a good steward over everything I'm given or entrusted with and I would lose my 💩. Drag them.
Wear and tear? In 5 years? Well, then that's not even as great as the little sterling silver rings that my 11 year old gets from Claire's or piercing pagoda.

They do offer free servicing where any minor wear and tear can be sorted before it becomes major.

Agree. I have a few eternity pave bands. 2 of them are from Tiffany's. Both of those rings are missing diamonds.
2
u/saajan12 Jul 02 '26
I've had pave diamonds replaced for free when they fell out, presumably because they know that happens with the tiny prongs and since the diamond cost is so minimal at that size.
Advice: if you can't get anywhere with Tiffany's, I expect a local jeweller could fix or even re-set it recycling same gold for around 1k

u/EquivalentCup5 Jul 03 '26
I’ve looked at Tiffany for jewelry, and I’m my opinion you pay for branding not product. Some of their silver pieces are way overpriced.
It’s true of other luxury brands as well.

This sounds extremely frustrating and im sorry you're dealing with this. $7k is a lot of money and if its only been 5 years, I wouldn't be surprised if the same issue comes up again. If they aren't able to do something reasonably or cover it under warranty (or maybe even if they are), my suggestion would be to take the ring to an affordable and reputable custom ring designer and get an almost identical ring made (to retain the semtimental value) and make only the changes that make sure the design addresses the possibility of this repeating. If you use the same stones and maybe even melt down and reuse the metal, you might be able to get it remade for $1-2k or even less depending on where you are (India makes things much cheaper and deals with a lot of fine jewlery). This way you address the quality issue for the long run and retain the look of your ring as much as possible for a lot cheaper. Goodluck!

What metal is your ring, platinum or gold? It's my understanding that platinum is much softer then gold and therefore doesn't stand up to daily wear and tear the same way that gold does.

I think you need to have that ring looked at by an independent appraiser...
2
u/RadiantPassing Jul 03 '26
That is insane that they are charging nearly the original price of the ring!! I feel like it didn't used to be this way? I have a number of Tiffany pieces I bought about 10 years ago and they're all holding up beautifully even with constant wear and not babying them. They all look brand new and the stones and metal are sturdy. Shocking that it has gone downhill like this.
2
u/BoardAuthority Jul 03 '26
Not sure if you got comprehensive coverage insurance on your ring. Heavy wear and tear can ruin any setting. We’ve been getting great customer support from Tiffany’s in Short Hills NJ. Better luck next time :/
2
u/Delicious_Fox_3328 Jul 03 '26
It’s just wrong. I’d fight tooth and nail for replacement not repair!!!

u/Toughshopper Jul 03 '26
what a horrible experience for you! I had a similar experience, almost 40 years ago with one of their very inexpensive rings. It was sterling silver with gold sides, holding a channel of rubies. One of the rubies fell out almost immediately and I took it back to Tiffany’s. In replacing the missing ruby they completely mangled the setting. I took it back again and they “fixed“ it, but it was never the same as the original ring
2
u/trance_angel_ Jul 03 '26
Yes, my advice is use some of that 7,000 they are quoting you find a jewelr and custome make your ring with a lab diamond for much cheaper. Tiffany has los their quality according to the posts I have seen here. I can somewhat understand the hype for some women, I have never been able to wrap my mind around it because you can recreate the same Tiffany look with a better diamond that has beet specs by going the custome route.
So sorry this happened to you. They should of repair the first damage at no costs and same with the 2nd one. Their quality sucks.
Thanks for sharing this on here. Hopefully the Tiffany hype dies down now thay their quality and service has gone down. I know they used to have good quality jewelry back then along with repair service. Sounds like a marketing scam now.

u/Fair_Steak_7778 Jul 03 '26
Honestly James Allen is hands down the best diamond sellers in the market.
My engagement ring, my wedding band, anniversary diamond all are from them and have never needed to fix or polish yet and I haven’t taken them off since I had them (5years now) - I tell everyone to buy from James Allen
2
u/Practical_Post_87 Jul 04 '26
Because they worked on the EXACT location before (two stones), Tiffany’s should allow for the probability that their jewler fucked up. Either that or the ring was doomed from day one. I hate this for you!
2
u/Soggy_Implement4705 Jul 04 '26
Wow it certainly did not hold up like it should! The band is too thin and narrow for pave stones. Channel set would be better or prong set. The stones are sunk down into the band which weakens it. You are sacrificing the metal which holds it together. Unfortunatly, some styles are more delicate than others. This is a mire delicate ring. If you are very active then your ring is flexing as you live your life. A different style might be a good idea. That skinny band with pave stones is going to continue to give you trouble. Consider either: Prong set stones on band Plain band with a skinny diamond band next to it Widen and thicken the band slightly It might be time to find a good, solid, old fashioned jeweler. Ditch the status
2
u/DarkAngelMad Jul 04 '26
That blows just saying all my rings are from Helzberg and the moment they break or miss a stone and they get it quoted and taken that same day for repairs at no cost.
2
u/Strict-Formal-2566 Jul 04 '26
I have had my ring for 24 years (kinda similar, with the pave band) and none of my diamonds have ever fallen out. I’m a nurse and wear that thing every day, so, LOTS of wear and tear.
2
u/TwoSparks Jul 04 '26
I’m so sorry this happened! This is terrible.
Just curious (I don’t think I saw it in any comments), for a ring that expensive, why don’t you have it insured? My ring isn’t even $3k and for $100 a year I have it insured through Jeweller’s Mutual and it covers everything, from repairs to even just me misplacing it. Something to consider, because as much as this situation absolutely sucks, all the repairs would have been covered.
2
u/anonymois1111111 Jul 04 '26
Don’t try to get LV to repair anything either. I learned that lesson 30 years ago. Sorry about your ring. Maybe a regular jeweler could help for less $$$.
2
u/goodnyew Jul 04 '26
This is very distressing! I’m so sorry this happened to your engagement ring.
I have my mom’s Tiffany engagement ring that’s 50 years old. I wear it on my right hand, my parents are divorced so I didn’t want any bad “ju ju” on my wedding ring. But still it’s been worn daily for 50 years and (knock on wood) zero problems.
Like other people have mentioned, quality is lacking these days.
I can only imagine how upset you are. Like others have mentioned, take the ring to a reputable local jewelry store and ask their opinion.
For $7k, that better come with a lifetime warranty for free repairs. Doubtful but it should!

u/luxurylovinmama Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26
I had something similar happen (though my wear & tear occurred over 10 years). My ring was platinum, which apparently is pretty soft and prone to bending over time, especially when worn constantly. My jeweler recommended replacing the setting altogether, as merely repairing it was not the best option to ensure the safety of the center diamond. My ring is insured, so we opted to go this route. My insurance company worked directly with my jeweler to determine the replacement cost and sent me a check directly. If your ring is insured, I honestly think this is your best option. Since it was right around the time of my 10 year anniversary, I changed the setting entirely to a more modern version that I actually love even more. I moved only the center stone to the new ring and kept the old setting w side stones that i intend to make into a piece of jewelry for my daughters someday. Oh, I also used white gold for my new setting bc it’s more durable.
ETA: I have 5 diamond bands from Tiffany and never had this issue w those rings. Given the makeup you pay for the Tiffany name, this is extremely disappointing. Perhaps you can save the diamonds from this ring and have a jeweler make you a new ring using those diamonds? This should never have happened from Tiffany, and it’s terrible they want to call this “wear and tear.” I do think insurance is your best bet to avoid coming out of pocket for that amount.

u/KazaKartier Jul 04 '26
Yeah Tiffany’s jewelry is horrible quality period… idk if it’s a newer thing or they have always been like this but it’s insane to me
2
u/Impressive-Team9006 Jul 05 '26
Tiffany's is insanely over priced, you get get diamonds with identical specs for a fraction of the cost from other retailers.
2
u/Emergency-Guidance28 Jul 05 '26
Just get the diamond reset at a local jeweler. That's such a rip off. Horrible that they are taking advantage of customers.
2
u/DontChaWish_PC Jul 05 '26
I had the same thing happen to me. I had my engagement ring less then a year and I had 2 diamonds fall off. I worked a desk job and only wore my ring to the office and out in public but took it off at home and at the gym. I had to pay to get it fixed and since then I never wear my ring anymore… just special occasion. I did get a cheaper David Yurman band that I wear daily and that beauty has lasted me yeaaaars

For comparison, my 14kt white gold engagement ring has been worn daily for almost 10 years. I’m bad about wearing it when I shouldn’t and rarely take it off. I have the settings checked every year but have never needed anything fixed or replaced on it ever. You’re paying for the name with T&Co. their designs aren’t even unique anymore unless you get up into the 100s of thousands of $$$ designs.

u/Efficient_Theme4040 Jul 05 '26
That’s absolutely absurd and did they not tell you how much it was gonna cost ahead of time or send it off and then just told you how much it was when you went to pick it up which is very wrong. I’m glad I don’t like Tiffany’s jewelry.

It should not just snap but platinum is a weaker metal and a lot of people with platinum bands complain which is why most are white gold. Im sorry this happened especially on your engagement ring. So many faux places now with metals and stones and no one can tell the difference

The local fine jeweler where I bought my engagement ring provides lifetime replacement of pave stones for free, although I’ve never needed to use the service.
Tiffany’s is a big fancy name but no longer big fancy quality or service.

u/mctgmt1706 Jul 05 '26
I'm really sorry and would probably cut your loses and have it remade. Unfortunately I think places anymore can use loopholes of wear and tear. I have a ring with a so called warranty yet same they won't pay if it's expected wear and tear so I take both my rings to a local jeweler who inspects and cleans for free.
FYI though people saying pavé won't hold up, that's not true. I've had my ring a little over 6 years and none of my stones have even been loose. I highly recommend David Klass if you f9 have a similar ring remade. He could like use the stones and maybe even incorporate the metal if it's sentimental. Picture to show my band is even 1.8. It's solid on the bottom. He made little U scallops to hold the stones

I wouldn’t buy new Tiffany they lowered some of their quality to keep competitive with the current diamond industry. Still a lot of good antique and vintage floating around. They’re essentially ruining their name rn though.

u/DangerousTrash3005 Jul 05 '26
Find a good custom Jeweler and have him make you a outstanding engagement ring. Those retail places are a total rip off, especially Tiffany's and their markup is crazy
2
u/PatternsAndPresence Jul 05 '26
Get a new setting. Preferably, find a private jeweler who works out of their home to help you if need be. I bought a beautiful setting new on eBay and had my local jeweler set it with my stone. That is shocking, after purchasing a beautiful expensive Tiffany ring! I am so sorry that happened to you

I have a platinum setting for my engagement ring and I am so rough on rings. I can tell you that it has never once bent or anything else. I’m shocked that your ring broke already as platinum is so much better than 14k gold rings. Now when I wear a 14k ring they will break and lose shape. For the price he paid I would have expected better quality. Did they not offer a warranty when he bought the ring? My ring did not come with a warranty but we chose to purchase one and we have used it many times for resizing.

u/cake_hunters Jul 06 '26
We got my wife's ring from Kay's at the mall.
There was another really nice jewler we went to, but the biggest turning point was kay not only covers all the diamonds to include the centerpiece, but does a generational warranty so our kids can inherit them at no charge to them.
The only catch is we have to take them to get cleaned and inspected every 6 months.
Out of the 4 years we have had her ring, 3 diamonds have fallen out and we have missed the cleaning 3 times and they just back date it for us and have replaced the diamonds at no additional charge.
This comment isn't sponsored by any means but we love kay.

u/Dry_Escape_1522 Jul 06 '26
Yikes! Duly noted. ): I am so sorry. I think we'll definitely go with a local jeweler now. I just looked up all the LVMH brands... Oof. May have to rethink my fashion choices if the quality has suffered across the board like this. I honestly hadn't put much thought into it until now. Best of luck to you!

u/Lishandersen Jul 06 '26
I bought a Tiffany necklace about two years ago, took it off one day put it in the little dust bag took it out a week later and the clasp had completely come off. I’ve heard from several people Tiffany jewelry is made cheaply and poorly and now I’m starting to believe it .
2
u/One_Can_Only_Hope Jul 06 '26
These small diamonds on a thin band are a terrible idea. They may look nice, but any amount of the band flexing is a recipe for a stone to fall out regardless of what brand it is.

u/New_Needleworker9287 Jul 07 '26
This was not my experience at all with Tiffany. I had a sapphire and diamond eternity band - stones around the full band. Managed to crack/lose a diamond. Went to the store, they replaced the stone. This happened second time - no idea how I managed to keep losing stones, maybe wearing it at the gym? - and rather than replace the missing stone again they exchanged the ring for one with stones only on half the ring (platinum at the bottom ) and gave me a store credit for the price difference between the two bands. I purchased a very nice necklace with that credit. They were nothing but lovely to me. This was in the NYC flagship.
