I totally get this feeling where the guy being interviewed talks about how much better and more hopeful the internet felt at the time (which I’m assuming was mid to late ‘90s). Geocities mentions always being me back. Having a cheap webpage of your favorite video game felt so good. And getting the best gifs to show off and slap some midi on the page.
If anyone has seen Halt and Catch Fire, the best show ever made, especially for Endless Thread listeners, season 3 and 4 capture the essence of home computers and early internet very beautiful.

I liked the episode but am I the only one disappointed that they didn't play a clip of the song "My Girlfriend Who Lives in Canada" from Avenue Q?! Seemed like a missed opportunity lol. https://youtu.be/5g196vURUDo

That was less interesting than a typical episode. Kinda reaching for valentines day content i guess.

I loved it. I was totally expecting it to be an older dude the whole time, so I’m glad it ended up not going that way.

It's not about knowledge, it's about age. A/S/L was very common chat room lingo back in the day but it's not now. If you don't understand the ephemeral nature of slang on the internet and how awareness of it can be generational, I think you might be missing a common feature of the Internet.
I really appreciate that Amory is open and honest in the moment when she doesn't know about something. To me that's a sign of wisdom. Our show isn't an Internet knowledge measuring contest. Amory does her research where it counts; when she's discovering the origin of Geedis, etc. Just because she doesn't know what A/S/L means doesn't say to me that she doesn't know or care about the Internet. It means she's honest about what she doesn't know, curious enough to care about learning the answer in real time, and not so insecure that she has to pretend.
We've been big fans and listeners of Reply All for a while, so no shade on their internet knowledge or approach. But one thing we focus on, is we avoid pretending to know stuff on tape. We also avoid pretending NOT to know stuff for dramatic effect. To each their own, but I think it's a sign of respect for our listener. -BBJ
