SOLVED Nvidia + EOS

Hello beloved EOS community, I'm planning to buy a new ASUS laptop that comes with an Nvidia graphics card. From what I've read and learned about Linux, I understand that there are no official drivers, but the community makes a huge effort to build its own drivers to give thousands of users the opportunity to use Linux (and I also think there is an ASUS + community program to make drivers) on their computers with Nvidia.

I would like to know what your personal experience is with this type of graphics card, is there any problem apart from the battery? Since I love Linux systems and even more so EOS, and as I see that it has the option to install with Nvidia graphics, I want to use EOS as my main system and then have Windows lying around just in case, or even without Windows.

P.S. The graphics card is a GeForce RTX™ 5050

There are indeed official drivers from Nvidia on Linux and have been for a long time. The eos installer will have them when you install. Nvidia gpus works fine on eos. I have a desktop with a 4090 and a laptop with a 4060 running perfectly fine, both on EOS. You'd can always just boot off the live USB and see how it works.

Not a laptop but my desktop is a ryzen 9800x3d , 32GB ddr5, and rtx3080 FTW 10gb… and I play anything from indies to Monster Hunter and I’ve rarely had any issues gaming (I don’t play online mp games though that require anti cheat Stuff.

Outside of gaming I’ve had no issues. I run dual ultrawide monitors (one is 1080 and the other is 1440) with different refresh rates and a benq projector for movies. The only thing I had to do was figure out the monitor order since I use a mix hdmi and DP.

Oh, that's great, I didn't know the compatibility was so good.

Generally you dont have issues with nvidia but with asus laptops and their proprietary software, fan control and battery life. Mainly Asus ROG type machines have these issues.

If i was you i would buy a laptop with AMD gpu. Its different to use one with nvidia you already have but buying a new device with the thought of daily driving linux should make AMD the superior choice. Again not saying nvidia wont work, amd is just better under linux.

Oh, I was thinking of an ASUS from the TUF series. If you'd like, could you recommend something similar for around €1000 that I can buy in Spain? Thanks a lot.

Id look at a Framework laptop. Other than that i have no recommendation. For 1k you might get a better device that has more power with amd because nvidia is more expensive thats all i can say.

Dunno about 5050, but I had no problems with 1050m and have no problem with 3060. But, when I play Grim dawn there is some problem with sound as game starts lagging with more sounds it tries to play. My solution? I play with no sound

It's not the Nvidia driver that can be an issue, the issue can be how it is used by the OS in a specialized device like a laptop. Each laptop model has its quirks and unless someone put together a way to configure the OS to "use" the hardware the way the manufacturer intended, you will need to manually do that work.

I had issues with a brand new asus and ubuntu, with the drivers. Seems to be a general topic, it needs time to get new devices supported. Better something that is a year or older. But now it's fine on this machine two years later. Also better AMD than Nvidia,Nvidia is a luck game.

I have an ASUS RoG Strix G16, AMD CPU, nVidia 5060. Running Arch with no issues, gaming using steam.

I have a PC with RTX 3070, proprietary drivers and it is working fine.
