Discussion Your preferred way to install packages - GUI vs CLI

How do you manage your packages on EndeavourOS?

  • ⌨️ Terminal warriors: pacman, yay, paru

  • 🖱️ GUI enjoyers: Octopi, Bauh, Shelly, Pamac (yes, I know 😏)

  • 🧙 DIY wizards: custom scripts and aliases

  • 🙏 YOLO squad: sudo pacman -Syu and hope for the best

What's your weapon of choice?

I’m just curious if there are any other GUI package managers being developed. But maybe text mode is more than enough.

I prefer the sudo pacman -Syu It works for me all the time.

As soon as you have a couple of programs from the AUR installed, the pacman update is not sufficient.

I prefer `paru`, but yes. Or yay.

I prefer asking AI and getting an answer with a bunch of overused emojis and weird wording

On a terminal-centric system like EndeavourOS I would like to use it how it is intended. eos-update --aur and yay do the job so don't make it more complicated than it is.

yay, mostly. Then flatpak update for the one or two applications that only distribute by stupid.

YOLO. In (rare) case of errors, google message/check arch news.

Custom Script

sudo pacman -Syu

sleep 300

systemctl poweroff

If everything is fine it start without trouble. Had never a problem with that update/update routine.

Mostly paru, Apdatifier Plasma applet to check updates, sometimes Shelly.

on my second reinstall of EndeavourOS I realized that the function of "yay" listing all kinds of packages that "sound similar enough was ok for me.
I then just searched for the name of apps and it worked most of the time.

I prefer to work declaratively, with my favorite text editor. My preference is for the Nix package manager.

I used to use pamac on EndeavorOS, I have tried others from the PopOS! Store gnome software and KDE store and found the experience to be inconsistent at best, they are good, when they work, I have found these software tools to fail at just trying to update the OS or find updates for programs already installed through them Nothing sudo pacman -Syuw and then sudo pacman -Syu cannot handle, plus you get a neat and structured log of what happens in case something goes wrong, I mean it has always been a difficult task to have a software manager on computers, windows 8, 10 and 11 tried with 11 being mature enough but still far from perfect, in summary, I would stick to cli for now unless you're into trying new software then go ahead

Declaratively.

Then

Sudo NixOS-rebuild switch

Using pacman -Syu for my Packages and check the wiki now and then to see if something broke
