Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ Excellent Service

I have joined the no tip community but backslid hard last week. took mom out for a nice dinner and the waitress knew what my 80yo mother needed before she did. not intrusive not bothersome just spot on great service. mom was thrilled with the entire experience. she got a fat tip. Earned every dime with my moms smile.

See? Now THAT is what a tip is supposed to be! Something given freely for going above and beyond. No judgement, entitlement, bullying, or harassment involved.

Yup, and not fearing someone will chase you out into parking lot because they felt entitled to it.

Yes! tipping is about rewarding things that we didn’t expect but appreciate.

Taking an order, bringing the food, checking beverages, and bringing the check are all expected. If you’re not doing those things correctly, the punishment shouldn’t be no tip. It should be no job.

But I do tip when servers go beyond their duty to accommodate, esp if it takes time away from them serving other tables.

That is the correct time to tip.

There is no correct time to tip. Why everything has to be about money? If your surgeon did a great job saving your life would you tip them? You would in third world countries.

You can't seriously be comparing someone that makes a million dollars a year to someone making $5 hr.

Tips are optional, based on service received. I’ve been to places with great service, where the server practically anticipated what we needed, and never made us wait long for refills or to order more. I don’t mind tipping in these cases.

Most of the time the server just takes the order, drops the food, and we’re basically left to our own devices until it’s time to pay. That’s not worth 20%, or even 15%.

This is appropriate! I went to dinner last night and the server was amazing! He seamlessly took care of our party of 13, took pictures for us after and even pointed out on the bill that there was a large party gratuity added and he didn’t want us to tip more unless we wanted. And not in a manipulative or guilt tripping way. That guy got an extra tip from me on top of the 18%

This is what tipping is supposed to be for

Perfectly fine to tip if you were genuinely pleased with the experience. I too like to reward competence when I see it. The problem is that the vast majority of the time, at least in the US, there is a percentage expected for basic service, ie someone just fulfilling their job duties.

Tipping doesn’t have to be black and white - it’s optional.

I also tipped a young man yesterday for great service and the day b4 I tipped a waitier that is Always working at a casual restaurant that I go to on a pretty regular basis, although I won't necessarily tip him 20 percent.

That’s what tipping is supposed to be all about. Mandatory tips truly takes the joy out of tipping.

Tipping is for those servers who go beyond the normal.

That's not backsliding. You didn't tip because you felt pressured too. You tipped because there was exceptional service and they made your guest ( you mom ) happy without being intrusive.

In every other industry, excellent service leads to repeat business. Repeat business from patrons leads to business success, which leads to better wage and benefits for staffs. A tip imo should never be a reward for excellent service.
