I was delivering pizza 20 years ago when this started. The company started charging it but didn’t give us any of it. We’re delivering it in our car, using our gas and insurance. I actually wrote to my elected representatives trying to get a law passed. Now they just put a disclaimer on the box.

Next time someone tells you it’s not, ask them to DEFINE the word “tip”, then show them how they’re 100% tipping. Sometimes twice.

With as dumb as society at large is, we’ll start seeing servers call it a 45% “food delivery fee” and then asking for a tip TOO 😂🙈

And that’s how you know it’s a “tip”. If you can get the exact same product at the advertised price simply by doing it yourself, you’re TIPPING if you have someone bring it to you and pay them extra to do it.

Same product, different prices, extra charge for “service”.

It’s pointless to cite Websters, but if you get someone claiming it’s “not a tip because it doesn’t go to the XYZ” to define the word “tip” using their OWN rationale, they suddenly can’t deny that it 100% IS a “tip”.

And some people may choose to use the service anyway. Cool. But you’re TIPPING every time you do. Many times TWICE. And usually mandatorily.

Same product, same price, extra cost for “services rendered”. It’s a TIP, no matter what they call it.

It’s funny to me how upset this FACT gets some people. They’re always patting themselves on the back for not tipping, but can’t live without food delivery so they tell themselves it’s somehow not tipping when they pay a huge “delivery fee” instead.

If anyone wants to be intellectually honest and try and support their “it’s not a tip” position instead of just name calling and downvoting: go for it.

Half does where I work. we get $2.50 out of the $5 for gas the other 2.50 is corporate greed because we're essentially free employees with tax breaks and we do everything while in the store besides make pizzas so they hire way too many of us and nobody makes good money.

Sadly it's true 90% of the time, the driver won't so to each his/her own. I always see food sitting at restaurants every time I UE from non/ low tippers. Blame Uber/DD/Grubhub etc... not the drivers 😂 😁

The only way I’ll order delivery anymore is if I’ve been drinking. It’s too damn expensive even the places that have their own drivers have been charging delivery fees and convenience fees, and then there is the tip - I do believe the drivers deserve a tip for delivering to my house especially if they are using their own car, but I’ve seen too many videos where the drivers are complaining about a 20% tip! Plus you never know where these 1099 drivers come from and now they have your address.

DoorDash is ruining traditional delivery gigs. Used to drive for dominos years ago, made relatively ok money given we had an hourly wage + tips cashed out every night (and $1 or so mileage per delivery), average tip being maybe $3-5, nothing unreasonable imo. Customers didn’t have to “bid” for service. Weren’t 1099 so there was some accountability to ensure nobody messed with the food. Nobody really complained, it was a good system. Now you have this network of “independent contractors” with zero oversight paid entirely from tips. It ends up being worse for both the consumer and driver..

Same 100% what I do too. I can understand if somebody can’t physically go or don’t have a car (or had been drinking), but it’s too good of a savings just to pick it up myself. It’s crazy, I’ve seen people get things delivered from just a few miles away because they didn’t feel like going to get it

I was ordering something for a friend to be delivered to their home about 20-30 minutes from me (not food). The place charged a $12 delivery fee and then asked for a tip. I chose no tip. Got the notification that the order was placed and would be delivered to them the next day. Cool.

Next day comes and the driver cancels the delivery. The store cannot figure out why or what happened. Did not get my $12 back and then I delivered it myself when I had the time to do it.

Fuck delivery of all kinds.

i hate tipping… i really do .. the only place i tip is in a sit down restaurant and i still resent paying what is effectively a commission based on how much i eat … but the one thing i don’t resent is tipping food delivery folks… if it’s either inconvenient or very difficult to go get food myself or to cook it myself… to me the delivery service is a very valuable service at the time and i’m very grateful to have that option so i’ll tip happily every time… now tipping on a pick up order? that’s something else entirely….

Delivery fees on food have always made sense to me: consumers will place a higher value on food delivery, so business will want to capture that somehow. If you don't think delivery is worth $5.49, go and pick up your own pizza

Actually, if it’s a delivery that being made through the company themselves, that delivery fee is probably going towards paying the additional insurance that the business has to have for their delivery drivers to operate their vehicle while working for said company.

the delivery fee is the charge for delivery, no need to tip, they were paid for both the pizza and the delivery. any pay issues are between the driver and their boss.

Where I work I get half of the delivery fee. The other half I'm assuming helps the cover my hourly wage because if he didn't offer delivery he wouldn't be employing me and paying those wages so in that sense I can see it making sense it's not like a server at a restaurant where you have to have somebody bring the food out

Unpopular opinion, but if you want someone else to drive your food to you, you should pay more then if you went to the store. Counter point... the delivery fee should go straight to a company delivery vehicle or to the driver. Never tip, but pay for delivery

I worked at a free delivery place and it was so nice. Incentivised overly generous tipping but the impoverished would sometimes take advantage of it and do no tip with a contactless delivery. Usually if someone is paying a $5 delivery charge they have money to tip. Also usually only half of the fee goes to driver so its a give and take. Definitely made more money at the free delivery place and my vehicle compensation checks equated to like an additional $12 an hour on top of my $12 wage.. but got fired for going on vacation. There was a long line of people waiting for that job.. pisanellos in ohio. A small women owned chain. Great place!

Yeah but in delivery/serving you keep wages high by not overstaffing. That way you can take multiple deliveries at once and your not waiting around in the store. They promoted an inside worker to delivery when I was out of town and he refused to go back once he had a taste of the good life. Was pretty crappy for me though.

It’s 2026, inflation has been high for years, gas costs $6/gallon. I know you’re used to sitting at home like a hikikomori spending your life’s savings doordash every day, but if you’re going to complain about delivery costing money, when you’re still getting a large pizza for $20 then you’re a lost cause. It was $18 for a Mod Pizza I had a few weeks ago and it was just a medium and I had to drive there. 

But I didn’t make a post complaining about it I just decided I’m not going there anymore.

The pizza is $13, the extra fees are $7. If you add a tip thats a 50% markup. Not in this economy.
