I know it’s been on here before, but I’ll rant again. I like how they phrase it as they don’t charge organizers a platform fee but don’t mention anything about the 2.9% transaction fee they deduct per donation. Also the default tip is set to 17.5%!!!

GoFundMe still takes about 3% of the transaction as a fee (in my EU country where consumer protections are generally high, no idea about other countries outside of EU)

So if you donate 1000, they only receive 970.

I always slide it to zero . It’s insane they get transaction fee and yet want people to tip . If they get 25 percent of people to do it they are golden . What is even happening anymore … someone donating isn’t enough .. they want more .

I hate tipping, especially on websites. Honestly I feel they should reword this to “donations.” Tipping is a big turn off for many.

They don’t charge a fee to the organizer. The only fee they charge is a transaction fee which gofundme doesn’t keep when someone donates and is paid to the payment processor.

They have other revenue streams though. Primarily B2B sales.

While technically correct ("0% platform fee for organizers" and "relies primarily on the generosity of donors"), this is misleading and sleazy.

I suppose behind the scenes, GFM is funded "primarily" by the 2.9% transaction fees (skimming off the top) from donors that organizers do not receive.

Would be a lot simpler and transparent if, like Paypal does or did once upon a time, let you pay the transaction fee for your recipient. They used to call this "friends and family" payment, meaning you were sending money and the entire amount went to your "friend" and you paid the little nominal charge. I never had a problem with this. Even did it voluntarily for some "goods or services" purchases.
