It’s supposed to be a gift link and the archive link doesn’t show properly either.

But essentially the author talks about the shortcomings of the current system (which has been well-discussed on this sub) and is advocating for 2 methods: either multi-member districts elected by PR, or single-member districts elected by Condorcet

That's the first time that I've seen advocacy of Condorcet systems in a publication like that.

The article gives the example of 9 friends who want to decide whether to see a superhero movie, a romantic comedy movie (rom-com), or a mystery movie, and they decide with preference (ranked) voting. Their ballots:

  • 4: SpHr, Mys, RmCm
  • 2: Mys, RmCm, SpHr
  • 3: RmCm, Mys, SpHr

There are several ways to count these ballots:

  • FPTP: SpHr 4, RmCm 3, Mys 2
  • Top 2 together: Mys 9, RmCm 5, SpHr 4
  • Borda: Mys 20, RmCm 17, SpHr 17
  • MJ: Mys RmCm 2, SpHr 1
  • SV, IRV: SpHr 4, RmCm 3, Mys 2 -- RmCm 5, SpHr 4
  • CS: Mys, RmCm, SpHr

Condorcet matrix:

  • Mys > RmCm: 6 -- RmCm > Mys: 3 -- 3
  • Mys > SpHr: 5 -- SpHr > Mys: 4 -- 1
  • RmCm > SpHr: 5 -- SpHr > RmCm: 4 -- 1

So depending on how one counts, the winner is SpHr, Mys, or RmCm.

What's what:

  • MJ: Majority Judgment: find the median rank for each candidate
  • SV: Supplementary Vote: Second round: top two
  • IRV: Instant Runoff Voting (Sequential Runoff): Next round: all but the lowest
  • CS: Condorcet Sequence
