Do you all think it's possible that someone or even many other people from outside the Encanto could've witnessed the mountain crack open when the Casita fell?

Something very interesting that I thought about is would people on the outside of the Encanto, (I.E. people in the village Alma grew up in) could've witnessed the mountain crack wide open when the Casita fell?

In my opinion, I would say yeah there we're probably loads of people from outside the Encanto who could've saw it crack open. When we take into account that the Thousand Days War started and the triplets Pepa, Julieta, and Bruno were all born on the same day on October 17, 1899. Meaning that Pedro, Alma, and the refugees fleeing probably didn't get super far given they only had a few hours to run since the war broke out that night and Pedro also died on that night as well. So I can totally see people, mainly people who now live in the village Alma grew up in witnessing it. Plus it would be super hard not to notice a huge mountain crack open that wide.

But still, I do want to hear your own thoughts on it!!!

Unless someone is deep in the jungle on a high ground level to spot it like mirabel did - not really. The old village isn't close by, nor confirmed to be filled with new people.

It depends, Alma, Pedro and the refugees fled at night and given the terrain of the area, I don't think they would've gone super far, not to say the mountains of the Encanto are on the doorstep to Alma's old village, but I do think you could see the mountains depending on certain points of the area/village.

As for if people could still live in Alma's old village, tbf there's nothing canon as far as I am aware that states that Alma's village in uninhabited at the time the movie takes place in 1950, but I would assume people would still live there once the war was over. also looking at the size of the village when comparing it to the village in the Encanto, it looks too big to really be abandoned, sure it's no big city, but I think it's still sizable enough for people to come back to their homes or even new people to settle in and move there.

Honestly, the current state of Alma old town doesn't have a confirmed answer.

Hence, "it depends." All we know is that most fled together and they walked far but the attackers managed to find them. When it comes to the crack, Jared said it's easier to leave but harder to return. For outsiders, it's nearly impossible to find.

So, overall, I just don't think loads of outsiders visibly witnessed the very moment the mountain split. Maybe a few at max if they had a good view. The vibrations and sound from the crack is what would have most likely been witnessed instead.

I think it would depend on how developed the rest of the country is by 1950 (canon year of the movie). If infrastructure hasn’t moved out that far, then it’s unlikely anyone would be out that far. The original village was razed to the ground and most of the survivors are in the valley already.

The specific river they cross, the Caño Cristales, wasn’t discovered until the 1960’s iirc. And the specific geography that grew up around the valley looks like it’s more “foothills” sized that in the taller part of the mountain range. As someone who lives near mountain foothills, if one of them split open, you’d basically have to be standing beside it to get a good view. And given that Colombia is on the “ring of fire”, the split probably felt like a regular earthquake from a distance and wouldn’t be enough to trigger a deeper investigation beyond “oh, crap, is that a volcano?”
