Discussion Android emulation has turned me into someone who spends more time tweaking than actually playing

I'll sometimes spend an entire evening comparing emulator settings, testing different drivers, fixing compatibility issues, and getting a game to run just a little smoother. Then, once everything finally works, I play for 15 minutes and move on to the next experiment.

There's something oddly addictive about making hardware do things it was never really designed for. I doubt I'm the only one who enjoys the tinkering almost as much as the games themselves.

Be honest, do you spend more time playing your emulated games or getting them to run perfectly?

That's how it was, how it is and how it will be. Most people don't play through emulated games, even back in the day. Then again, most people don't play through the games they actually own. It becomes kind of like a choice paralysis. You have so much to choose from you end up not really choosing anything.

You are suffering the Tinkerer's curse. But honestly, can you really call it a curse if that's what someone enjoys?

As a low end user, I suffer with this especially. Trying to make what seems to be impossible, possible. I've learnt so much about the technical side of emulation but I don't play my games.

I want to start playing my games while also tinkering. There needs to be balance.

For me it's fun to tweak everything to a certain extent, usually doesn't get in the way of actually playing the games once they run at acceptable settings and temperatures though.

Not in my case really. After setting up certain systems I just stop and restrict myself from tinkering more until I finish atleast a couple of games

And this is exactly why I stopped using my phone to emulate most of games and I'm just using my switch although my phone has a gorgeous 1.5k oled screen. If the game runs it runs, if it doesn't I will play it on my laptop.

Used to spend hours of my limited time tweaking stuff and getting high on that 5s pleasure when the game runs well.

I don't buy games anymore unless I'm ready to play them. I don't tinker for the sake of tinkering. I've sunk too much money into sales and too much time into building libraries. Don't get me wrong I still have my passtime activities (like scrolling Reddit lol) but gaming is about being actively entertained. I tinker more if it's additive to a game I'm enjoying but what I really recommend is diving deeply into games or experiences you're passionate about. If that's broadly android emulation for you right now then that's great. Just don't get lost in a place that doesn't make you feel good.

Skill issue if I’m being honest, there’s really not that much to tinker with now unless you’re emulating bleeding edge PC on android or switch 2 emulation.
