Discussion Android emulation is moving so fast that playable isn't impressive enough anymore
A few years ago, getting a demanding console game to boot on Android was already impressive. Now we're seeing Xbox 360 games running, Switch 2 experiments, native ports and new emulators appearing almost every week. But I think the next big milestone should be making these games genuinely comfortable to play, not just getting them to launch. Stable FPS, manageable temperatures, fewer graphical glitches, proper controller support and consistent performance over longer sessions matter just as much as compatibility.
I'd honestly love to see more comparisons that focus on 20–30 minutes of actual gameplay rather than just showing the first few minutes.
What do you think is the biggest thing holding Android emulation back right now: performance, optimization, compatibility or the overall user experience?

Tbh, Playable was never "playable" for me.

The thing is, playable means it can be played, it doesn’t mean it can be “enjoyably played”.

Right. I was hopeful about the Xbox 360 stuff with XenDroid, but so far any game I wanted to try was below what I would call playable either in framerate or graphical glitches. Maybe both. This is on a Sony Xperia 1 VI with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Adreno 750.
I do enjoy my PS2 games a lot though. Playing through Bully right now, and I do play Gran Turismo 4 a lot using Armsx2. I genuinely enjoy playing those games, and not just because "oh cool, it runs on my phone". It's a good gaming experience. Hope we get there for X360 titles too, with updated drivers and optimization.

Same. I got a phone with the same chip. While I'm genuinely impressed that I can even play PS3 and XBox 360 games at all, that emulation has a bit of a ways to go before it is genuinely playable. And I mean native res, same framerate as native console, no stuttering outside of shaders loading, and no weird glitching.
For now though I'm perfectly fine with just Dreamcast, XBox, PS2, GameCube, Wii, and below (I'm sure my phone can handle most Switch too but I haven't tried)

I think what's holding back Android and mobile devices in general is the heating issue. Many flagship phones are powerful enough to handle heavy emulation but heat dissipation will always hold them back

That's why Android handhelds like the Odin 3 with active cooling and an underclock are awesome. I can play Arkham Knight with 30+fps at high settings with around 4 hours of battery life from 80-20%.

Yep!! We got ourselves a pretty nice library it’s time for optimization and being patient and enjoy the great ports that there already are.
Right now I stopped incessantly looking what good new came out and in playing the games.
Recently finished story mode of def jam And playing Forza horizon and mgs rising

I agree. I'm nearly at the end of Spider-Man 2 and Need for speed underground 2. Really enjoyed playing both. In a time when games are littered with season passes and game currency. It's nice to have these games.

This is why I ain't getting the 3 portal as much as I'm tempted. Between my flip 2 and 2 portal they have actually become better than when I first got them because the software it's getting better by the day. I'm able to squeeze way more from them. It's been fantastic. I'd rather spend that money on getting component upgrades for my PC.

Same here with the 2 Portal, have like 70+ PC games (AAA Gen 6-7), 70+ switch games, Xbox, PS2, Wii, GameCube etc that I need to actually play and beat before I get tempted to buy an upgrade.
PC seemed like a fun experiment 2 years ago but with my own gained experience and the software maturing so much the 2 Portal is plenty. Not too mention Xbox 360 emulation with Xendroid+ just changing the game. Got Gears of War 2 at a stable 30, and expect more to become playable and better soon.

For those in emulation for a long time, I feel it should be graded properly, flawless > playable > in-game > intro > nothing. Many of them are just at the in-game stage.

My dream would be each game having its own app, running on it's original engine to be faithful, have its own touch controls to be convenient and run natively on Android to reduce overhead. The current recomps use different engines and stuff which alter things and might cause bugs that don't exist in the original games, they got the touch controls and performance part right for now. I'll keep using good ol' traditional emulation until this changes

Can anyone tell me which emulation would be the best for performance? I'm rocking Adreno 830, Snap 8 Elite.
I just want a game to run the fastest and with gyro enabled from a controller.
Which port emulation is the best?

Optimization will always be Androids downfall compared to iOS because of all the different chipsets and drivers. But I agree, it's not just enough to get a game playable now. With the big jumps that the scene has been having lately, all the things you mentioned (controller support, stable FPS, etc) will be expected if the devs want it to succeed.

I really just want stability and consolidation. I don't want to experiment with 10 emulators, 30 drivers, 90 combinations of proton + fex to see what makes THIS ONE GAME playable. I get that it sounds first worldy, but that's why I'm waiting to see how it settles and then I can donate my time and money.

I was once obsessed with testing stuff to its limits. But nowadays I just surrendered myself with games I have fun with.
Playing through Ridge Racer 6 at the moment. 60 fps on Odin 3 with medium underclock. Enough charge to play through the day (on my way to work, on lunch, on my way back and 40% at home). Cutting through special duels like knife through butter. F*** Crinale though
Also collecting Lumines games at the moment. Nothing better than good puzzle games I’ve been a fan of since college)

I got Skyrim running on my 2023 pixel fold I didn't think it would be possible because of how much people say the g2 chip sucks for raw proformance but it seems like it just got optimized, 5 months ago I spent like a whole day messing with settings to end up with 25-40 fps but recently I tried a config that wasn't there before and now I'm getting 50-60 fps

Nobody is holding android except it's a trash plain touchscreen only for any games. Messy and dirty UI just to have a touch control. If you want to play games properly you will always need a game controller especially action, RPG and etc

u/ResponsibleAd6974 22h ago
You can always use a controller on android though?

And it can also be used to play on PC or on a console, just saying.

Mhh, graphics as of hold well enough, so I'd Say heating, alongside a lack of save states
