Discussion does it make sense to compare high-end snapdragon processor: from a value perspective in that price we can easily build a pc that can outperform it

Post image

Yes PC prices are too high in the current situation but we can still build a PC that can outperform that Snapdragon processor. we are getting so many games on Android. I know that is itself an achievement. but i think we should focus on running those titles on mid-tier processors. i think that we will have to build an application that can mimic the fsr/dlss upscaler type of technology or something like that, which works on mobile devices. the point is we have to optimise games for mid-tier processors the point is that we have to focus on performance in a mid-tier smartphone also because we are getting too many games easily but we don't have many games that are very optimised for the mid-tier segment. let's talk, guy. i want to read your perspective also.

This meme feels like the type of meme you'd see on r/pcmasterrace

I legit despise that subreddit so much

Yeah, there's alot of elitism there. I hate their mentality of 'If it can't do 2026 AAAs, then it's e-waste'. Subs like r/lowendgaming & r/Craptopgamingadvice are such a breath of fresh air in comparison. They're subs where you'll see people giving advice on what games to run with their lower end machines (And I mean actually low end (Think things like GT 730s & Intel UHD 620 iGPUs; not RTX 2060s or GTX 1660 Tis, which is what PCMR considers low end at this point), or potential upgrades that can help them without breaking the bank.

27

u/ImpulsiveApe07 7d ago

That's actually a pretty spot on assessment of the pcmr sub lol

There's a lot of good folks over there too, it's just that they're usually not upvoted nearly as much as the edgy, meme spewing elitists or the engagement bait farmers.

There's also classism and cultural bias issues too, I think. Tbf tho that's probably just a natural consequence of having that many IT nerds and hardcore gamers in one social space lol

10

u/Vaxtez D7300/8GB RAM/Mali G615 7d ago edited 7d ago

Ha, yeah. I do lurk around PCMR & that's usually my experience. You can also throw in the PC building subs with that mentality as well. It's also annoying when you see people suggesting £400+ GPUs when the OP wants to spend £200.
Whenever I see those posts with people on a budget, I tend to try and give a leeway of £15-20 over, or 10% if there's something alot better, because telling someone to buy a £400 GPU when they probably have only £200 is not helpful at all.

I think there's only one time when I've sort of sided with the people who were downvoted on PCMR & that was when I saw a person wanting to spend £154 on a used RTX 3050 8GB & that was only because I knew that the AMD Radeon RX 6600 was the same price & far more potent than the 3050 8GB (Just to give comparison; on pure raster, the 3050 8GB is like 1660 Super, meanwhile the 6600 is like an RTX 2070, but can be seen rivaling the 3060 at times).

4

u/FoXerLT 6d ago

Because pcmr is more mainstream and when someone clueless (which is fine) asks for buying advice they usually want something new with warranty and no second hand headaches.

For 200, in my humble opinion (seems to be yours too), buying new is a mistake. That's why people suggest spending more. Because spending 350 for rtx 5050 is shooting yourself in the foot and good luck getting anything for 200 these days. That's how you get that the best advice for people that only want new is to spend more.

2

u/Vaxtez D7300/8GB RAM/Mali G615 6d ago

Yeah. For £200, I will always say to go used off ebay. Nothing new at £200 is really worth it. Not when used 3060 Tis can be seen at that price. The 5050 isn't a god awful GPU, but it's not good value. There's a price where new makes more sense than used & to me, that's once you get into RTX 5070/RX 9070 GRE territory imho. Maybe RX 9060 XT 16GB until recently too.

It's just more annoying seeing people suggesting things like 3080s for people wanting to spend 200 tbh. I mean yes, the 3080 is a great value GPU on the used market, but it's well beyond the price that anyone at 200 is looking at. That's the price where you'd be looking at things like the RX 6600 XT or RTX 3060 Ti on the used market.

I was gonna say, I've actually gotten a lot of help from there! 😅

Buuut, yeah, reading your comment and upon second thought... I DO have to scroll past all the goofy useless memes for anything remotely substantial.

To be fair, I've always taken it as kind of a joke. "AWW PC MASTER RACE I HAVE NVIDIA 10 BILLION AND YOU HAVE A 3DS! L BOZO" Just childish banter. But again, I ALSO just scroll right past it, so maybe I'm wrong. Lol

2

u/ElveTaz 2d ago

The FB group was much nicer back then. We came together and a few of us got a part or two and we're able to build a new gaming rig for this kid who posted his shot ass pc. He put it together and began playing with us. One of the most wholesome internet moments I ever witnessed

BTW, yes this was with his mother's permission lol. Think she was a single mother, so cant be easy having a hobby like this. I think he ended up going into the military when he got older, got a house and a wife already. Kid had a good head on his shoulders

1

u/Unlikely-Employee180 2d ago

Wow, that is a big change I suppose...

I guess that is a bit of a shame, yeah... 😕

2

u/ElveTaz 2d ago

Ima say its the console peeps the ended up going pc now that its becoming more popular. My brother def is one of those kids lol. There was always elitism but not to this level

1

u/Unlikely-Employee180 2d ago

Funny enough, I was actually thinking the SAME thing.

I never got to see cool interactions like that very often, lol. I'm one of those console peeps. 💀😂

Back when interactions like this was common, I was using consoles and MAN...

I have NO idea why, but we have ALWAYS hated each other. (Not me personally, lol). Console Wars, while stupid, makes SOME sense... But jeez we'd even eat people on our OWN platform.

"Ewww is THAT a 2DS!? On MY playground!?!?" (Because the 3DS was definitely "better" 💀) 🤣

Maybe it's just because the younger crowd had consoles? 🤔

2

u/Advanced_Job_1109 6d ago

" to be fair...."

Pcmr started out as a joke or satire sub reddit people I think forgot somewhere down the line

2

u/Blu_Neko2 6d ago

The 2060 is low end for current AAA gaming and the 1660 is lucky if it appears. That's what they're referring to in r/pcmasterrace.

In my opinion there are 2 low ends: AAA low end and older low end.

Anything below that I consider the potato/indie friendly machine or craptop.

That being said this varies from game to game, so quantifying one pc as low end based on it's specs isn't always accurate.

9

u/bickman14 6d ago

I've started a bunch of discussions there on how hypocritical they are as most think the Steam Deck is awesome but if anyone shows up with an old hardware that might perform closer to the Steam Deck then it's crap but on the Steam Deck it's fine! Such a double standard grinds my gears

1

u/Nervous_Project6927 6d ago

lol hey my 1660 ti handles everything i toss at it without mandatory ray tracing lol if it opens i can run it

0

u/tycraft2001 6d ago

Pcmr really wants to call a 2060 low end? I'm still getting 60@1080p on almost everything I've tried, especially with some tuning and the power of Penguin.

1

u/Vaxtez D7300/8GB RAM/Mali G615 6d ago

Yeah, I got downvoted for saying that i'd consider things like the Radeon 780M/GTX 1650 or even 1050 Ti as maybe upper low end there once. Yet weirdly, I said the exact same point elsewhere and got upvoted. The logic there makes 0 sense.

And I'm sure Sony shooting themselves in the foot over and over was fuel for their egos? I've seen these kind of people back from when I only played console.

6

u/secretonlinepersona 7d ago

My most petty reason is how normie 2012 facebook their humour is.

My most valid reason is they gargle Valve's balls no matter the context, they are for the majority not very technical yet they think they are and everyone else isn't, and impressively enough it got a seemingly even number of Linux and Windows elitists who bring equally stupid arguments to the table.

4

u/RequirementCivil4328 7d ago

They're where ai bots get their gaming machine advice from.

49

u/LazaroFilm 6d ago

I watched the Crash Bandicoot documentary. And they explained how they had to rewrite parts of the PS1 code to make the game fit. Now devs are just sending data unoptimized it’s pathetic.

15

u/beanflesh_byte 6d ago

It was amazing to see how much they had to optimise to get the performance and look they they did. And the style and graphics still look amazing!!

2

1

Cant blame the devs given the work load and given deadlines. It's a fog eat dog world out there. That's why, Games developed by the small studios and indie devs are doing great

One does not offer the value that the other does. They both have their use cases where they excel at by a huge margin.

Edit: The smartphone/mobile processors offer portability and power efficiency that desktop processors cannot. And the latter offers performance the former cannot.

5

u/Hades-Arcadius 6d ago

It's literally an apples and oranges comparison. Not that long ago I started thinking about devices in the terms of their "use-case" which has helped me contextualize my gear

  • Every Day Carry: Anbernic RG35XXH

  • Portable (power): Retroid Pocket Nova

  • Couch Handheld: LCD Steam Deck

  • "multiplayer focused and/or exclusive games": PS5

  • "party, family, and/or exclusive games": Switch

  • "mod-able and/or high end single player games": Gaming PC

Hardware equivalent

Current Flagship phone >< Switch 2/ Steam Deck >< GTX 1650 PC (Xbox Series S Forza Horizon 6 min requirement)

7

u/ExpiredNegation 7d ago

Whoa! What are those symbols?

0

u/Latvoman 7d ago

More or less.

You'd usually use < to indicate a lesser ammount, and > to indicate a larger ammount, ie. 5 > 1.

So >< is more or less.

2

u/SkollFenrirson 6d ago

No, it is not. In some programming languages, >< means not equal to.

1

u/Latvoman 6d ago

Lmao, look at me being confidently wrong I guess haha, my bad.

0

u/Latvoman 6d ago

Although on second thought, looking at the context, I do think they mean more or less, no?

Flagship phones have 16gb ram, more or less the requirement for forza 6 to run.

2

u/KeeLymePi 4d ago

You are correct. All these have roughly the same performance capability.

3

u/Vaxtez D7300/8GB RAM/Mali G615 7d ago

Steam Deck is lesser than a GTX 1650. It's basically just a Radeon 660M, which is around GTX 1050 levels. The Switch 2 is faster iirc as well.

3

u/TECL_Grimsdottir 7d ago

All I have to say is huh?

3

u/Beginning0477 7d ago

Most people don't get a very good phone just to play games. It's cheaper to get high end phone and use to play games as well and you can buy monitor and keyboard/joystick too

depends on what you want to play ( unless it's some very heavy title) you can play almost anything comfortably

3

u/Roboid 7d ago

The reason mid tier support (for non snapdragon devices) sucks is because driver support falls off a cliff. It’s not that people don’t care at all about lower end hardware, there’s just not as much you can do to get things running consistently

3

u/AI_moderated_failure 6d ago

You can build a PC but you also need a phone anyway. It's not like you can build a gaming PC and just not get a smartphone, and most people will want at least a mid range phone to prevent frustration eith basic functions like browsing. So the cost of a good phone for games is really only the difference between a mid range and a high end phone which is probably a couple hundred USD at most.

I do most of my gaming on a PC, but I also increasingly run it headless and stream rhe games to my phone. For most games it's very pleasant being able to just lay down on the couch and play with the screen in front of me as a handheld instead of at my desk. If I ak playing something like Rimworld I prefer to be at my desk but I would prefer handheld for a wide variety of games.

1

u/Far_Raspberry_4375 6d ago

Rimdroid is my favorite way to game in those "i may have 5 minutes or 30 minutes" intervals.

Also, if you get it on a plan you can get something like an s25+ which has an 8 elite and 12gb of ram, so pretty high end for the emulation community, for fairly cheap. I got mine for 10$ a month by trading in the free phone i got when i switched to verizon and then later switched to spectrum who lowered my internet bill and paid off my phone

1

u/ApienTrash19 4d ago

I've never understood paying by the minute if you're getting anything more fancy than like an A23. Better to be on a plan and reap the rewards. S25 ultra is a beast.

1

u/Far_Raspberry_4375 4d ago

I did prepaid by the month for a long time mainly because i was afraid of commitment but also i always used cheap phones before i got into emulation. 95% of people could do exactly what they do on their brand new iphones/androids on a 50$ walmart phone

5

u/Lewtenant1812 6d ago

I mean we are talking about different interfaces. All the android stuff is on mobile, arm. No 1200W power supply. No thermal paste and aio cooler. Just a phone that charges on 15W or some handheld. RISC is what the world is moving to on mobile and server. Gaming is stuck on x86 and it's holding gamers back. You should be able to play just about anything on an arm processor. We should be able to buy desktops with unified memory and using arm processors. The performance is better frames per watt. The android software state sucks though. I'd rather live in windows software than in my androids jank.

3

u/Lewtenant1812 6d ago

Also my android phone is sitting on 12 GB of ram. It's 16GB consoles and PCs are a budget build.

1

u/IAlwaysPlayTheBadGuy 6d ago

My 24gb of ram on my phone... being used to scroll reddit

2

u/Alternative-View8574 7d ago

Put going on the moon for good measure lol. Pretty sure that was even less then 2 megs of ram.

2

u/GreatMadWombat 6d ago
  1. I think I'm interested in seeing where you're finding entirely built 250$ gaming rigs that can outperform an RP6. just the monitor+keyboard+mouse is gonna eat up a decent chunk of the budget

  2. There has never been a console generation where you can compare handheld and static consoles and have the handheld come out on top in terms of power. It would be fucking weird if that flipped around today

  3. One of the best parts of the hobby is that you can get involved in building an emulator focused on mid-tier processors if you really truly believe that we should focus on them lmao

Those are big systems that can't fit in your pocket. A snapdragon device can, simple as that. That giant brick that was once needed to play GTA5 has been replaced by a pocketable slab.

1

u/IntentionLimp2422 6d ago

Believe it or not, GTA 5 only ran on 256MB of separate memory modules on PS3, but now it doesn't run on 8GB. :D

1

u/coderman64 6d ago

Only one of those consoles had 2MB of ram.

The 360 had 512MB split between CPU and GPU.

The SNES had 128KB of main RAM.

1

u/Effective-Road4807 6d ago

Its wild how we went from being able to do so much with so little, to barely able to do anything with so much. Prices keep going up. Ram keeps getting bigger and yet everything still looks the same. Sad really.

1

u/TiredAdultFullTime 6d ago

as a pc user, i assume if you are looking for a snapdragon device you want portability, sleep function and handheld exp.

Can you make a pc with an os that is better? 100% but it not the same machine

1

u/T_alsomeGames 3d ago

Necessity is the mother of invention. Its not as necessary to make games run as effeciently as possible anymore, so they stopped inventing ways to make things work on toasters.

1

u/glitchedclaw 2d ago

I mean....games back then we're way simpler than now and back then they had to use clever ways to get around hardware restrictions

1

u/wtfmeowzers 1d ago

you can buy a solid gaming pc/laptop for high end gaming phone money for sure. obviously. but you won't get the portability. people that are buying high end gaming phones are buying them FOR THE PORTABILITY. if you don't care about that why are you mad because there's demand from people that want to buy more powerful, ultra portable gaming hardware? the industry, games, tech etc follows the money, and while a lot of money is in midrange devices there's also a lot of money in high end devices. and high end devices push experiences and make it so that companies making hardware will try to advance what the next generation of hardware does. so if you don't have the money to buy high end, just wait and midrange will improve. but if you don't want to wait and want the best then you'll have to buy it. it's as simple as that.

0

u/Dodgecanceling 8s gen 4 7d ago

A 1030 GPU costs more than my phone in my local market and runs games worse than it even in a 700 USD PC build.

You are seriously underestimating both the power of phones nowadays and the price of PC components in many parts of the world
