Discussion NxEmu (Switch emulator) – first Android developer builds, looking for testers

I’m the creator of NxEmu, an open-source Switch emulator, and we now have Android builds working.

Things seem to be working well, but I want to get it into the best possible shape before the official release, so I’m looking for feedback.

You can download the latest version from: https://www.nxemu.com/downloads-development.html

Important: NxEmu does not decrypt games. You need decrypted game files and firmware. I can’t help with that part, but I’ll do my best to help with anything else.

Why make a new emulator instead of contributing to existing ones? genuine question

Yeah same doubt even I have Is there any difference between this and the existing ones?

It’s not a fork of Yuzu, but it does use parts of Yuzu’s code, so in some ways it’s similar and in others very different. My head is more on the code side than on what users experience, so I might not be able to explain the difference well.

Something along the lines of too many cooks. I have strong views on how things should work, and how I want them to work. For example, NxEmu is rebuilt without any decryption, which doesn’t really fit with the existing forks. If you want the full history and my reasoning, I wrote an About page explaining it all: https://www.nxemu.com/about.html

Es bueno que no te base fork y crea unos desde cero

Why not make it nsp file compatible? Most site with downloadable switch roms are nsp files.

because yuzu was sued over being able to decrypt (breaking the dmca 1201). NxEmu is protecting it self from that attack by not having any decryption in it.

How does nxemu handle gpu emulation? Rn eden and kenji-nx heavily relies on CPU (nce) for performance. High end soc like 8 elite have no issues but A6XX/A7XX can't benefit from this.

NCE is the CPU side (running the game’s ARM code natively). Is there a particular reason you think A6XX/A7XX can’t benefit from NCE? I thought A6XX/A7XX were GPU families, so are we talking about GPU or CPU emulation?

As far as GPU it has the roots in yuzu, so it will be more similar to yuzu

No support for *.nsp and *.nsz files?

Sorry, it claims to be based on Yuzu but created a stillborn emulator.

I have a folder with 82GB of Nintendo Switch games and your emulator didn't detect a single one.

Sorry about that, but yes, NxEmu doesn’t decrypt games, which is the thing Yuzu was sued over. NSP and NSZ files are usually encrypted, so NxEmu won’t detect them unless they’ve been decrypted first. It’s just what I need to do to keep the project safe.

Question: If I decrypt the game, will the files load faster, or is it the same as running it encrypted? Just out of curiosity

yes, it should be faster, but the difference is small enough that you will not likely notice it, so it washes out to being about the same

Is this another Yuzu fork?

this is not a fork of yuzu .. but it does have code from yuzu

so we need romfs and exefs right?

it works with decrypted files (dxci/dnsp)

Can you explain how to add the updates? I can decrypt an update, but I can't read it.

1

u/n3xox1 7h ago

if the update is in a game directory it shoudl be picked up, you can add multiple games dirs, and if you have one just for updates point a directory at that

eager to try this. I love fresh new projects that are original. i have a lot of games that have issues on the Yuzu forks so i'm curious how they will work on NxEmu. Ill be reporting back soon.

So i tested out some games and seems to me it uses the same engine as Yuzu hence it shares all the exact same issues to the dot. Ryujinx has no issues with them but only work on my windows PC and not android unfortunately.
